Changing the Scooter V-Belt

After some usage, your scooter will begin to need some basic maintenance performed. Scooter V-Belt replacement is just one of the many things you will have to have done after a couple thousand miles. Some of the time, this is not always the case and things go unchecked much longer. Left unchecked, a scooter V-Belt will eventually snap leaving the owner stranded on the side of the road. This is type of job can be accomplished with a few basic tools:

DISCLAIMER: Maintenance, disassembly and repair of your scooter should only be performed by people with sufficient mechanical skill or experience so that no unsafe repair or modifications are made. Before you begin a scooter v-belt replacement, make sure you have ordered a new belt that is the correct size for your scooter. Also, a word to the wise, a cheap belt will cost you more down the road. It is recommended to buy either a brand name or premium belt such as a Gates Powerlink or Kevlar Belt. They will last longer than a cheaper standard belt. Let’s begin! First you will need to remove the CVT cover from the engine to expose the drive train of your scooter. The cover is held in place by a handful of bolts. Once the bolts have been removed, you may need to give a gentle tap on the CVT cover with a soft rubber mallet. Always use a rubber mallet to avoid marring or flattening the cover. A gentle tap usually will help “pop” the CVT cover free from the engine. Once the CVT cover is off, inspect the inside of the CVT. Usually the belt will be shredded and there will be a lot of belt debris. Remove the old belt and clean out all debris from the CVT, variator and clutch. Any debris left in the CVT will likely cause further problems later on. Now you need to remove the outside half of the variator. A 17 mm socket will be needed to remove the nut. This is probably the most difficult part, as the engine will want to turn with the variator. This is where the impact gun comes in handy. If you do not have an impact gun, you can use a block of wood and a flat screwdriver as a wedge. Once the nut has been removed, pull off the variator top half. A quick inspection of the roller weights inside is necessary to ensure there are no flat spots or excessive wear. Replace the roller weights if this the case. Now check the clutch pulley operation. You are making sure that the pulley can move freely when compressing with your fingers. To install the belt on the clutch first you will need to compress the clutch. Leave enough slack to loop the scooter belt back on to the crankshaft where the variator will be reinstalled. Once you have reinstalled the variator top half, check that the 17mm retaining nut is on tight to ensure the variator will not come loose while operating the scooter. Reassemble the CVT cover and test ride your scooter. Congratulations, you have completed a scooter v-belt replacement!

Being such a vast, flat and open country, Australia is the ideal place to go on road trips; especially by bike. There is so much to explore, so many different places to visit and so much to see and do. In this article we’ll take a brief look at some locations for Australian motorcycle trips and what’s on offer. Sydney Bike Spots The nation’s largest city by population doesn’t have to mean spending all your time sitting on your bike stuck in traffic. There are places to go and things to see that your motorbike can take you. You may have to get out of town a little, but just north of Sydney you have the beautiful Hunter Valley, west are the Blue Mountains and National Parks and State Forest to the south. The Blue Mountains is a World Heritage listed region, full of unspoilt scenery such as the Three Sisters. A bike ride here with a group of friends is something you must do, with many scenic and winding roads taking you right through the mountain ranges. There are plenty of places you can stop off for a coffee or bite to eat, and why not make a full day of it and go on a few bushwalks to the many waterfalls in the area. The wine district of the picturesque Hunter Valley is right on Sydney’s doorstep. Ride the roads between the vineyards and sample some of the country’s best wines along the way. If staying in the city, a ride to Sydney Heads or through Bondi can still be fun, or take a trip further down to the coastal regions of St George and Cronulla. Perth Bike Trips The city of Perth itself has some beautiful spots to take a bike ride to, such as Kings Park and Botanic Gardens. Or perhaps a ride nearby the Swan River or up to Fraser Avenue lookout. There are also some great wine areas within the region of this city. My suggestion is to get your friends together and head out of town for a few days, following the coast south to Bunbury, the Margaret River and Albany, then circling back to Perth via an inland route. There are some great forest areas on this strip, with long stretches of winding road. Another idea is to head west of Perth on a short trek to the historic town of York. It’s only about an hour from the city and you travel through some very scenic countryside. The Perth region offers access to some of the best Australian motorcycle trips. Brisbane Roads By Bikes A trek around the Brisbane CBD and taking in the scenes of the Brisbane River can be a nice weekend ride. The other advantage to Brisbane is its access to nearby locales such as north to the Sunshine Coast, the Gold Coast to the south, or head west and explore the Scenic Rim. Along the Scenic Rim – a favourite for motorcycle riders – there is the Glasshouse Mountains, areas such as Lake Moogerah (which is a nice ride), and further south there is all of the Gold Coast Hinterland with its National parks, bushwalks and waterfalls. If you have a few days to travel you can ride even deeper into the Scenic Rim and take in much more of this beautiful region. Sometimes, riding in the rain isn’t fun, but with the right biker rain gear, the journey can be enjoyable and a new experience for you. The most important point; get the right rain gear. Whatever rain gear you get; make sure that it keeps you dry, warm, and comfortable so that you could feel all the aspects of the bike. I enjoy riding in the rain, because I bought the right gear for me. Riding in the rain challenges me and changes my bike experience. Getting the right rain gear could be tricky, so here are a few things to look for.

Once you have the right rain gear suited to your specific riding requirements; you will start enjoying riding in the rain and won’t let the rain stop you from arriving at your destination on time. There are a few more tips I want to share. When it starts to rain; wait at least 20 minutes; the roads are less slippery. Stop for a coffee or under an overpass for about 20 minutes and then continue your journey. If you can’t wait; slow down and drive carefully. Avoid the painted lines or painted turning arrows as they are extra slick in the rain. Slowdown when riding in the rain. The idea is to enjoy the ride; not risk crashing. Keep the throttle low until it’s dry again. Another good practice; try to relax when riding in the rain. When you are stressed and tense, you make bad decisions. If you feel yourself getting frazzled or jumpy; pullover and get a coffee or have a smoke till you are relaxed, then get back on the road. Remember this is supposed to be fun. I recommend you ensure your face is properly covered. The rain really hurts on your face, which makes the ride uncomfortable. You can wear a full face helmet or I prefer a neoprene face mask. Neoprene face masks keeps me warm and dry; they cover my face and ears. They are a great addition to your biker gear. They come in all kinds of designs or just black. Full face or half face. They are easy to store. It doesn’t matter what you prefer just as long as you are comfortable and secure. Decent tires are one of the most important safety pieces while riding in the rain.
