Madeline Raith here. Looks like I'm back on my feet and ready to... have some fun. They say blood is thicker than water, but I'm not sure my family would take a similar stance. Come and say hi, I hardly bite. [[This is a role-play blog for the Dresden Files by Jim Butcher.]]

hey y'all, sorry I've dropped the ball a little over the past couple days. My eyes have been giving me a lot of trouble and I just had a doctor's appointment yesterday and i'll have glasses by Monday. Until then I need to limit my computer access and I need to use what I do have to do homework. I'll try to get replies out Monday after work.
Thanks for the patience.

Madeline protested a little, but even she could tell there was no heat in it. When the other immortal swept her into his arms, she simply wrapped hers around his neck and burrowed her head into his shoulder. The intimacy was odd, but she was just so tired. A slow thought crossed her mind that she really had pushed too far, had called on her Hunger over the past... however long, just to keep herself going.
"Sleep would be good." She mumbled quietly, muffled further by the position of her face. "Don't leave me alone?" She asked quietly, not holding tight but looking into his face a moment. "Not in the bed or the room if you don't want. But stay in the apartment?" She was still very fuzzy on why he had been there, and if she had welcomed him in any way. She was very fuzzy on many things, but she knew quite clearly she didn't want to be alone. Even this tired, even with how deeply the dark would take her, maybe especially because of that. She did not want to be alone.
(bewarethewoodsman pushing yourself meme) Nash looked at the technology in front of the succubus, which had been glowing for the better part of three days. Her fingers clacked on the keys for a handful of seconds before she sighed and hit another key, deleting what she had written. Nash finally stood from where he was sitting on the woman's couch, stepping forward and taking her hands in his before closing the 'lap-top' with an audible 'SNAP!' "Your actions are becoming redundant, Miss Raith."
Madeline shuddered and blinked up at Nash, eyes slowly coming into focus. “Hunter, what are you—?” She blinked again and shook her head, trying to clear it. She was just so tired, but she’d been working so hard on… something. It was very important. She’d been doing something very important. One hand tried to reach for the laptop again, straining only lightly against Nash’s grip. “I need that. I was working on… something.” God she was so tired she could hardly remember what had been so vital in the first place. “How long have you been here? What time is it?”

Madeline took a deep breath and froze, facing the woman who was offering such friendship. She bit her lower lip tentatively, and could already feel her eyes filling with tears. She hated this weakness, hated this fear. Hated what had become of her. With a growl she spun away from Lin and ended up slamming her palm through the wall, the only expression of her frustration she could muster at the moment. "I don't know what to do!" The tears were spilling down her cheeks despite her anger. "I don't know how to stop feeling this way."
(Relax meme) My dear, please, you must rest. Even our kind need to rest. Here, I'll get you some calming tea... - Lin Sung(askajadecourtvampire)
"No! I will not rest. I can’t, Lin, I just… I can’t." Madeline continued rummaging through her apartment, a mostly-human hurricane that left order in its wake rather than destruction. She wasn’t sure right now how long she had been awake, or how many times the kitchen floors had been cleaned but she couldn’t stop. If she stopped, she would sleep. And sleep was… just not an option right now.

My name is Madeline Raith. I believe you know Thomas, my cousin. We aren't close, exactly, but the family grapevine has never been lacking.

I do not think I recognize you.

Whether a book is “trying” to uphold certain standards or not, it can still be held accountable to them. These are issues within larger society, larger media, life in Western culture. It’s perfectly reasonable to criticize books for not meeting standards of decent representation, whether they initially or intentional sought to do so.
As a ridiculously huge fan of these books, I must also be critical. I look at these books and simultaneously go “Wow, I love them” and “God, I just wish there were queer character who weren’t a joke. I sure wish I could see people like me in my favorite series that are not caricatures, jokes, or queer-coded as gross villains.”
The response to “Wow I see some problematic elements in that series you read” isn’t “well I’m just gonna pretend they aren’t there and you can go read something else if you’re that upset.” You can read whatever you want and have whatever opinion you want, but you really should try to take the time to understand the problematic elements of these stories and characters and the author who created them. I like the Ender Saga and Orson Scott Card is a raging asshole. That comes through in some places in his books. Do I stop loving them? No. But I do take the time to recognize the issues present and make sure I’m not erasing them just because they do(n’t) upset me personally.
Also, what do you mean to apply them to TDF you’d have to apply them to all books? I can’t speak for the OP, but honestly? I do. I consume my media critically. Even the things that I love and could never give up on, I consume it critically. “All books suck” isn’t a good enough reason to accept that this one sucks and then go on pretending like it doesn’t.
Really not trying to be rude here, and don’t wanna start a fight or anything, but I feel like this is super important to talk about.
Edit: Sorry, I know I did this already but gosh, this particular line is really upsetting to me: "If you are looking for these specifics in fantasy books, might I suggest The Steel Remains by Richard K Morgan? Gay antiheroes abound left and right. It’s incredibly violent, but I think it might be better suited for you." So a person who wants to see queer representation isn't allowed to read books that weren't specifically written for them? There's a prerequisite of white, cishet-ness to read and love and enjoy the Dresden Files? I really don't know if this is the point you were trying to make but it's deeply unsettling to me.
Also basic, bare bones queer representation isn't asking for an "idealistic world" it's asking for the real world. Throw us a bone, but don't get mad at us for begging for scraps.
i really don't see any misogny in the dresden files or shitty representation, just my opinion though, where do you see it?
literally everywhere tbh…
harry’s whole shtick is this whole chauvinist “protect women bc they’re weaker” bs and it’s all over the books especially the early ones
example: every time murphy calls him out on it, which is supposed to be funny since he never takes her seriously…ew
(i can’t remember exactly there was also something with murphy pulling a “not like other girls” thing in one of the short stories, i think it was the one after harry died, can’t remember the title)
literally every few chapters harry has to be like. i am a Straight Man, a Real Man who has to objectify women every time i see them, Super Straight
butcher especially objectifies and sexualizes queer women. i s2g that’s the whole purpose of the white court, to present non-monosexual people as depraved evil sex fiends
the worst and grossest example of this is that thing at the end of ghost story when justine has sex with another girl just so she can be with thomas, and implies both that it’s going to be an ongoing thing and that it’s solely for thomas’s pleasure. super disgusting and shitty and biphobic
there are literally no trans and/or nb characters. 15 books, set in a major urban center with fairies and vampires and werewolves, and everyone is cis. that is a load of bullshit
i can’t think of any major non-white characters other than sanya off the top off my head, and he’s only appeared in a couple books
if anyone wants to add to this, it’s definitely appreciated (i’m white so contributions in that area would help, and i haven’t read the books other than skin game recently so)

Rumor has it
Rumor has it that she puts on a different face in public than she does in private, and is actually far more affection and tender a lover than Thomas Raith could ever be.

Even the word fear struck a chord deep in her belly and she went very still for a moment. Eyes a little distant, voice quiet, she replied. "No. I can promise you that is not true."

Rumor has it your brother is slowly convincing you to come around to House Malvora and to start feeding off fear instead of lust.

I get that feeling over on maggielefay sometimes. Maybe make a sideblog for a different character— then you can move between them if you start feeling stuck?
I really shouldn't, given how much of a time suck this already is. I thought this was going to be an easy semester for me and it's turning out otherwise. This is a nice distraction but I can't let it become much more of one.
thank you though <3

Or you picked the right character. How are characters supposed to get along with a villain if the villain has no story? You’re giving Madeline a story. Give a little time, and threads/relations will improve. Just a suggestion :D
I'm trying, I am. I'm just a sad puppy about a lot of things tonight so it's just another thing. But thanks for the kind words.

It was... comforting somehow, to hear that laugh from Thomas. To know that she'd done something to earn it, and the smile that went with it. "Though somewhat trying, I'm sure we can both come to a reasonable conclusion eventually."
"Rumor has it"
"Rumor has it you suck." She said with a petty little glare and maybe a hint of a pout.
