June 18 Food distribution - 100+ meals given, along with some clothing, masks, and towels. Thank you again for your donations. Prices in Mysore for basic goods continue to increase, so your support is coming at the right time. Petrol (gasoline) hit 100 rps per liter (or $5.25 per gallon) in Mysore, an all-time high that is increasing the prices of other basics, like food. Covid case counts have been consistently lower than 1,000 in Mysore, which is a good sign. June 17 We scored a batch of appointments at one of the hospitals offering Covid-19 vaccinations and managed to vaccinate 50+ of our older kids (18+) and Covid volunteer staff and a number of poor people living in slums who do not have proper identification. Second shot will be in 12 weeks. It's a strange situation in India, with a few large private hospitals securing vaccine doses that they can then charge the public for, and the other vaccines being allotted to government hospitals. The only way, still, to get an appointment is to sign up on a website or an app, and one must have identification. Many destitute cannot get vaccinated because they don't have Internet access or proper identification. Also very difficult is convincing the poor to get vaccinated. We weren't able to bring along several of our kids' parents because rumors are spreading about how dangerous the vaccinations are. But we managed to convince a few of them. Lots of politicians are "guaranteeing" a 100% vaccination rate by year-end in Mysore and India overall. Given the prevailing attitudes and fears among the poor that we talked to, that'll be very tough to achieve. Next, we are attempting to vaccinate some of our homeless and others we know who are living in tents in our area who have no form of identification. Covid cases in India have declined dramatically and schools have opened for in-person classes for 5th to 12th grades, as well as colleges. So, we sent our kids to school this past week 😷 and they're busy catching up. The 10th grade public exam usually held in March ever year has been rescheduled to June, so our 10th graders have time to prepare. Here's one of our nine 10th graders, Jyothi. We met Jyothi in 2005, when she was born. She was homeless until she came to our home in 2008. She's now a solid student in 10th grade and has grown up nicely! We are hoping 🤦🏻‍♀️🤞🏻🤷🏽‍♀️ that schools in Mysore aren't forced to open for in-person classes on Sept 21/Oct 1 and that kids won't be forced to attend. So far, online classes are working pretty well for our kids. One of the schools we send our kids to stopped their online sessions for 9th and 10th grades and told all of the parents that it is required that the kids go to school (it is not), so we started an online curriculum for these students. So far, so good with Zoom and Teams and tablets! New Flash! Our two 12th (PUC 2) graders got their public exam scores this past week, and they did very very well - both scored in the First Class ranking for the state of Karnataka. Yay! Divya and Vijayalakshmi are officially finished with high school and are on their way to university, when school starts again (date unknown). Divya, who has been living with us since 2008 (!!!), is interested in pursuing her business degree. Vijayalakshmi, who came to Karunya Mane in early 2009, wants to become a first-responder EMT, an admirable career choice. Both girls are from destitute, single-parent backgrounds and have done very well for themselves while at our home. A couple of years ago, the kids had the chance to take photography lessons from a great teacher, @pattystrulovic and they loved the experience behind the camera and learned a lot. This past week, we built into their daily schedule three weekly photography periods for the kids, when they can take photos within our compound on various themes. This week’s theme was “what does the lockdown and coronavirus mean to me?” Then they upload the photos to our Google Drive and critique them. News Flash! The 10th grade CBSE exam scores came out today and our kid, Surya, did very very well. He was #1 ranked in his class at school (yay!) and in the first class for the national exam, and we’re all very proud of him. Remember Surya back in the mid-2000s, when we met him? He’s always been a curious kid, even when playing on the streets of Mysore while his mom begged, back then. Now, Surya is a top student and excellent young man, and has solid ambitions for his life. Mom is also doing much better and has always cared about Surya and his two younger siblings, all of whom have been with us at our home for years. Surya has already started his online coursework for his new PUC (11th and 12th grade) courses at one of the best engineering schools in Mysore, and is working hard.
