A blog about espionage, the enigma machine, and pre-war Europe.
Don't wanna be here? Send us removal request.
Note
Hope it's ok if I use them for reference in a WWII sub sim game.
Dear Sir or Madam,
I assume you also sent the previous message “Do you have more of those monthly 'Kenngruppenschlüssel', post May '41 ?” and to answer your questions, all of our codebooks are randomly generated using Dirk Rijmenants’ codebook tool and the style of our codebooks is based on a photo I found on the Internet of a codebook that I liked the style of and imitated in photoshop. So for the time being we have no further codebooks beyond May 1941. None of the codebooks you see on this blog are authentically from the second World War and were made specifically for our use here. I would advise against using our codebooks for reference as you’d be better off using photos of actual codebooks for maximum authenticity. I wish you all the best.
Regards,I.P.

Dear Sir or Madam,
Apologies in advance for the delayed response, this message did not reach my attention until last night.
I’m not entirely sure if this message will reach you, but I feel it is my duty to answer regardless.
It seems this message originated on a geocaching site, and I feel it unsportsman-like to hand out the answer, but assuming you wrote both this message and the comment on the geocache site four days after writing this one, you finally managed to solve it after five years! (Holy smokes!)
Another apology for not being of any assistance one month and nigh two weeks ago, we could have helped nudge you in the right direction if we had seen it.
This message made me realize how rusty I am at decoding Enigma messages as it has been quite some time since I last used an Enigma machine. This took two hours longer than it should have, but I did decode it in the end with a re-read of the manual.
Once more, sorry for the massive delay.
Best regards,
I.P.

Dear sir or madam,
Sorry to say that I bear bad news. The message you sent us to decode does not appear to be in standard Enigma form, nor do we have clues as to what settings would be used to decode it; thus we are unable to assist you. We use a Wehrmacht Enigma I with a B reflector, and the form in which you provided us is incompatible with our setup. We do not have an extensive knowledge of more advanced ciphers as we are merely archivists familiar with the workings of the Enigma machine. You may wish to look elsewhere for the proper decryption of your particular cipher.
Many apologies and good luck!I.P.

Dear Sir or Madam,
Sincere apologies for replying two months late, especially as we bear unfortunate news. We were not able to decode the two messages provided, efforts resulted in a jumbled mess. This might be an error on the original author’s part and we suggest contacting them by any means you see fit.
Once again we apologise for our late response, and we wish you the best of luck on your quest.
Best regards,
I.P.

Why are you encrypting ENGLISH messages with enigma code. You should for history's sake use german texts... The enigma was used by the germans.... It was a bit hard to find out that you are using reflector B but it's fun Decrypting your messages.. 20.Oct.1940 gnd txz = FYFGZ ITEPA CZZCS
Dear Sir or Madam,I'd like to direct you to our "About Operation Turing" page. There, you will see we are trapped in an Alternate History! Indy has told us of a universe where the Germans were the only ones who had access to Enigma. I can only imagine what that must have been like. Please feel free to continue decrypting and reading. These messages are meant for public intake, in our effort to declassify. Transparency is the name of the game, here and now. Please feel free to send us some messages as well! We need more operatives with information we can use! Sincerely,L. Crawley

Radio Transmission VII: February 10, 1938 has Buchstabenkenngruppe of TJJGH. Cannot find any combination of these letters in the Kenngruppen for that date. Please advise as to location. Also, Radio Transmision VI: February 9, 1938, Buchstabenkenngruppe of FUJRE is found in the February 8, 1938 Kenngruppen.
Thank you for bringing this to our attention. This month’s codebook for February 1941 is an exact match for the February 1938 codebook, and it is much easier to read, so this should aid you in locating the missing set of letters.
As for the latter two messages, because they were made so long ago, we do not know how or why they are encoded using the Feb. 8th code. In fact, all three of these messages, despite being of different dates, use the same encryption. Highly unusual; something that I, personally, do not recall having noticed. Thanks for the message!
Best regards,
I.P.

I need some help decoding something I'm not sure if it's and enigma code or not it looks like one that's why I am here
Dear Sir or Madam,Thank you for your recent inquiry. We would be happy to help you with your cryptological conundrum. Please feel free to send us the message you came upon and we will see if there is anything we can do to help steer you in the right direction. Please be aware, though, that without the key, we will have a fairly difficult time breaking the cipher. All the best,L. Crawley
