Oppose Gravity’s - Movement Foundations now at Arete
For the first time at Arete, we are super excited to announce Functional Movement Classes by CJ. The aim of the class is to help you enjoy a better range of motion, aid recovery and help you start feeling great again after a week of tough rolls.
If you’ve seen Rickson Gracie training on the beach in the documentary Choke, or more recently Connor McGregor training for his fights (minus the spaghetti arms) then you have an idea of what functional training is. By educating the body through guided sessions you will learn how to perform gymnastic strength movements, attain yoga-like flexibility, and regain the childlike mobility you once had as a kid.
BJJ does place specific demands on the body (any BJJ practitioner hanging around a gym long enough will hear complaints of tight shoulders, stiff necks, sore knees etc!), the classes will address those issues. However, the aim is to also to improve the technical vocabulary of your whole body, which will help you move better, keep you on the mats longer and feel more vibrant throughout the day!
The first class will be held this Sat 20th Oct from 2pm-3pm. For the benefit of all students, spots are limited for this class - to book please message us directly or email [email protected].

The work is starting to pay off this was the first match I’ve won by submission. In my opinion the drilling is what really gave me the edge as well as a basic understanding of the principles of movement and Jujitsu. I lost my second match which wasn’t recorded ( @el_osso_bjj wtf man!) The second match was against a blue belt I held the dominant position attacked throughout the match before making a mistake and allowing them secure a triangle, nothing but lessons learned! Already gearing up for October’s Copa De Bangkok can’t wait to test the material again, Asia Open I’m getting ready! The Thirst is real!! #jujitsu #drilltokill #bowandarrowchoke #movementculture (at ARETE Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu)

Soisci’s Open Movements Workshop Part 2
This is Socisci’s second workshop, she came last year in July and I must say it was an awesome two-day event. I had definite plans on bringing her back and here it is again I'm sure this event will be even better. Click the link to see my blog of her first time teaching a workshop in Bangkok, Thailand.
Open Movements Workshop Description
Two full days exploring different movement qualities and elements with Soisci. This workshop will explore:  Coordination and rhythm (2 crucial and often overlooked/ misunderstood elements for moving well in sport and throughout life).  Mobility in motion- not isolation.  Stretching as neurological food for thought.  Letting go of inhibitions; enjoying creativity and self-exploration. Injuries and why they happen.  Balance work.  Developing comfort with irregular patterns.  Visiting different types of physical strength.  Spatial awareness.  Internal awareness.  Breathing.  Feet and joint health. Martial work to train adaptability and most movement qualities. Preparing for graceful aging- what is useful, what is enjoyable? Learning through play (as children, animals, and athletes do); Play, play play.   Anyone is welcome to join; there are no prerequisites or levels of physical skill/ condition. The only expectation is that you arrive open-minded and prepared to give your best (so that you and everyone can get the best). This will be Soisci’s second time teaching in Thailand, don’t miss out on this rare opportunity!
Who is Soisci? Soisci is the founder of Human Patterns; a Sydney based movement coach with 15 years of martial arts practice (a former Muay Thai world champion), and seven years of teaching experience. Her material is an amalgamation of her past and present experiences with her teachers, and her own creative research.  She spent four years immersed in the Ido Portal Method (where some of the basic material shared stems from) and is presently very strongly influenced and inspired by the Fighting Monkey Practice, whom she is studying under.

BMC Monthly Free Event
This monthly meeting will cover another Intro to gymnastic rings. If you’ve ever been interested in learning about a gymnast’s number one training tool, you dont want to miss this free event. I will be covering the false grip, locked elbow positions, basic and inverted hangs, shoulder mobility and strengh drills. As well as the prerequisites for conditioning the hand, wrist, elbow, shoulder, and scapula which all play a major part in preforming movements on the apparatus.
Started my movement journey as a teenager with martial arts (Hung ga) at Lam Tang Kung Fu Academy where I completed the instructors program and became a senior student with 6 years experience. After realizing gaps in my training I started lifting weights which lead to calisthincs and adult gymnastics with over 10 years experience.

At this months meeting we have Rosana Corral teaching spinal articulations. Spinal Articulations elongate the spine increasing our range of motion as well as building stronger stabilizer muscles that help mitigate injuries. The facet joints in the spine allow motion (articulation). These hinge joints move in flexion, extension, and twisting allowing the articulations you see in the video below. Dancers around the world have been aware of this movement for ages no wonder many of them have healthy spines.  She will aslo be showing the fundamentals of footwork in a way that a dancer and a boxer can easily digest and implement into your practice. Timing/balance/direction/distance/speed/rythym are the foundations of footwork. With a simple tool she’ll show you how to improve all the of those qualities. You don’t want to miss this event learn how to control you hips, spine, shoulders and every other joint so you too can move with freedom.
She originally trained in jazz and urban dances in her native Spain. Over the course of her time living in London, Buenos Aires and Bangkok, she fine-tuned her skills and developed her very own style, mixing street dance techniques with afro latin. She will help you understand musicality, sense of balance and weight, isolations and different energies and tempos, Her influences include jazz, hip hop, breakdance, afro, house and latin

Here's a clip from yesterday's climb after a great bouldering session with the crew, finally completed a difficult route i had challenged myself to finish weeks ago. My focus here was to keep my form no floppy legs, strong bent arm lock 🔐 outs. My second goal is to continue to increase my muscle endurance I need to stay connected longer without burning much ⚡️⚡️ In all I completed about six routes on the bouldering wall ranging from v1 to v4 yes I'm just an amateur. After that's came the peg board completed two rounds and finished up around 5 sets of pull-ups. - - #movementculture #climbing #pegboard #endurancetraining #strength (at Rock Domain Climbing Gym)
