Yandere Variants

DISCLAIMER : none of these definitions or quotes are mine. Im simply putting them here for easy accessibility as I haven’t seen a post on tumblr about these. The link to the reference is accessible through the picture of the diagram at the bottom. I did minimal changes to the definitions to keep it true to its original, such as keeping things gender neutral.

Keep in mind that these types can also have sub-types to them, such as if the yandere is open with the things that make them a typing, or chooses to keep it more hidden. Some may relate to a typing but find themselves to be a less severe sub type. Most of these types can be rooted in their controlling and possessive nature, though it isn't the same for everyone.

CONTENT WARNING: Includes descriptions of extreme yanderes. Mentions of self harm, suicide, murder, death, violence, domestic violence, stalking, ghosting, and other generally mentally unwell things.

A single yandere can (and normally will) fit in multiple of these types at a time. In particular, Yuno Gasai fits a dozen of them, which is why she's an ideal example of yandere. The following list is sorted by degree of insanity, ascending, (see diagram at the bottom.)

HARMLESS TYPE | mugai-gata | 無害型

“As long as they're happy, I'm happy."

Seek to bring joy and fulfillment, taking care of their darlings wants and needs and often value them more than their own. This might bring them to change their entire self if it makes them happy, or even allowing them to pursue someone else in the end. They still can have levels of obsession, but wont cause any harm.

WRONG IDEA TYPE | kanchigai-gata | 勘違い型

"They gave me an eraser… this must mean they love me!"

Desiring to believe what is their ideal outcome for their darling and their wants/needs, they will mistake what is wanted and requested often substituting it with their own desires for their darling. Unwilling to see their mistake, they seek to fulfill their misunderstood darlings every wish.

OBSESSION TYPE | shuuchaku-gata | 執着型

"I sent you 50 messages, why didn't you answer? Where were you? What were you doing?"

Nothing is more worthy of their attention than their darling. They always want to know what they are doing, where they are, how they're doing, thinking, what they need/want, ect. They will often daydream about their life together and spend most of their time thinking and talking about them.

STALKER TYPE | sutookaa-gata | ストーカー型

"You looked so precious in your sleep last night.”

A variant of the obsession type. This type wishes to know every detail about their darling. They pursue them by learning what they like, where they do, what they do, who they associate with, ect. They will observe you from afar, and like to take most of their attention when they are with them.

MONOPOLY TYPE | dokusen-gata | 独占型

"Who is that person you were talking to?"

They want to believe there is nothing their darling wants more than them, giving them constant and unending attention. Focusing every possible movement and amount of time they spend together, even reducing time their darling spends with others. Will ask who you talk to and hang with, in extreme cases won't let you be with anyone else, not even your friends. They are insecure and lack trust in the relationship. They are quite harmless if their darling is willing to devote themselves.

DEPENDENCE TYPE | ison-gata | 依存型

"No, don't leave me! Please! I can't live without you!"

They wish for their darling to know they made a difference in their lives and seek to be vulnerable around them by depending on them. This can range from mild to extreme. They often fail to have a backup plan if their darling fails them and often have traumatic experience if their darling is harsh/unfeeling towards them.

PROJECTION TYPE | touei-gata | 投影型

"You're just like them."

Projecting their ideal lover onto their darling and expect them to act just like their ideal lover, even forcing these notions onto them. Becoming upset if their darling doesnt act or behave like their image. This can be caused by death or disappearance of someone they loved in the past.

DISAPPEARANCE TYPE | shoushitsu-gata | 消失型

"They will never love someone like me… why exist?"

Thinking their darling will never care for them or that they will be happier without them in their life, as well as believing they are not enough for them. Resulting in them running far away where they cant be found or even ending their own life. They want to give their darling the life and happiness they deserve, even if that means they are not involved.

FINAL TYPE | shuumatsu-gata | 終末型

"I don't need a world where they don't exist."

Not having much luck when it comes to love, love is now dead to them and something that only brings them great emotional harm. Not feeling love unless their status with their original darling can be fixed/improved in some way. Seeing others display love will also make them feel discomfort and sorrow and will avoid it as much as possible.

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE TYPE | DV-gata | DV型

"It hurts? That's your fault! Next time learn your lesson and stop looking at other people!"

Believing that if words dont work, stronger methods must be employed. They dony fear using physical means like a tsundere would. But unlike a tsundere they hit them out of lack of emotional control, dont know what else to do or conceal their feelings. They believe doing this will improve the relationship.

RESTRAINTS TYPE | sokubaku-gata | 束縛型

"Let`s stay together forever! You'll never leave my side, not ever again!"

Desire to have their darling to be with them always, literally. They make sure their darling wont leave their side now or in the future, often using promises, deals and or contracts to make this happen. Providing everything their darling wants and needs so they want to stay by their side even more. They may come off as insanely clingly, but they just dont want to lose their darling.

DELUSION TYPE | mousou-gata | 妄想型

"Pretend you never saw that. I can’t stand it when you look so scared."

Similar to the “Wrong idea” type, only much more severe. Their own mind transforms or tries to forget unsatisfactory or cruel reality to what they want to believe in terms of their relationship with their darling, as well as the feelings/state of their darling. Unable to accept rejection, absence or death of their darling they will in turn ignore it. Believing they can fix it, replicate or obtain this ideal life in others.

SELF-HARM TYPE | jishou-gata | 自傷型

"Hey… look at me… look at me… look, there's so much blood coming out…"

Hurting themselves to show their true devotion to their darling, making it clear to anyone that they belong to them. Their self-inflicted wounds represent infinite loyalty and love, treating their body like a canvas. The self-harm behavior will be used to prove to their darling that they would do anything for them, not caring if they end up hurt or dead.

REMOVAL TYPE | haijo-gata | 排除型

"Why are you crying for them? You don't need other people. You have me."

They believe they are all their darling needs and wants, they seek to remove other people out of their darlings life. They may destroy messages both physical and virtual, interrupt conversations and lead their darlings interest away, dissuade friendships and pull them away from their friends. They will not stop with just people, phones, pets and any other distraction is fair game.

DOUBLE SUICIDE TYPE | shinjuu-gata | 心中型

"Let's die together!"

Their darling has committed, so they decide that they will follow on the steps of their darling to be reunited with them because they having nothing else to live for now. They will try to get their darling to not follow through if they plan to do so, but if they cannot they will accept their decision only if they can do it together.

SELF-SACRIFICE TYPE | jiko-gisei-gata | 自己犠牲型

"If it's for you I wouldn't mind dying!"

They desire to safe their darlings from extreme and minor happenings, from taking a bullet or cleaning the dishes for them. They tend to give their darlings all of their time and energy towards what they want and need. Seeing giving themselves as an essential to a relationship and as the ultimate gift.

WORSHIP TYPE | suuhai-gata | 崇拝型

"I'll do anything for you! I'll even kill for you! Please use me however you want!"

Often having an aggrandized opinion of their darling, they see themselves as insignificant compared to their darling. They might compare themselves as inanimate objects such as tools. They may also allow their darling to pursue someone else due to their viewpoints. Reacting sometimes negatively to those who do not respect their darling.

TRAINING TYPE | choukyou-gata | 調教型

"Say you love me… come on, say it. Say you love me. SAY YOU LOVE ME! Good darling! Here's your reward."

Wanting their darling to devote themselves, ideally from the start, they train their darling to care about them and how to do it. Some do it secretly by consciously letting them know when they do something they see as positive, often giving gifts, appreciation and spoiling them to encourage that behavior. As well, showing disappointment when the opposite happens.

LONELINESS INDUCTION TYPE | koritsu yuudou-gata | 孤立誘導型

"Shhh… it's ok. I'm here. You don't need anyone else. You can just count on me."

Seek to have their darling's interest all to themselves. They dont target their darlings friends or other relations but rather their darlings. They sow mistrust and put blocks in the way of the rest of the world, overtime ending in the result of their darling soley having them to trust/rely on.

BIZARRE-SEEKING TYPE | kyouki-gata | 猟奇

"I love you, so… can you give me a vial of your blood? I want it so I can always have a part of you with me!"

Desiring very strange things that people wouldn't collect as mementos of their darlings interest or to analyze them. This includes things like; hair, blood, saliva, cut fingernails, used tissues, bitten apples. Their darling usually does not notice the absence of these things. They will not try to bring harm to discomfort while doing so.

TYPES NOT ON THE DIAGRAM:

PROTECTIVE TYPE | Mamoru-gata | 守る

“I will always step in between you and something like that.”

They care deeply for the wellbeing and happiness of their darling and fear what others may do to them. Often being on the lookout for anything that can cause any type of harm or discomfort before taking action to get rid of it. They may push people away from their darling who they feel is a bad influence or will cause harm. Usually use threats and violence behind the scenes.

MANIPULATIVE TYPE | Sousa-tekina-gata | 操作的な

“I’m trying to help! You had a problem, and I fixed it!”

Seeks to get their darling to react positively to their presence and to care about them by manipulating them as well as their feelings and world perception. They struggle to help their darling intentionally do these things while also being suitably covert to work on their subconscious. Preying on their weaknesses is an often occurrence.
