hey guys, quick question!

why do we feel the need to bring up grayson’s queer woman identity when critiquing her work? specifically the tags bringing up her racist writing. her being a queer woman doesn’t free her from being racist last time i checked? it feels very…dishonest. she fetishized dick and his relationship with bruce. she fetishized the romani people. AND she used racist stereotypes. she brushed off dick’s trauma by saying (and i QUOTE) “for the record, i’ve never used the word “rape,” i just said it was nonconsensual…”

why are these facts discredited because she’s queer. sure she apologized for not acknowledging it as rape. ten years later. and i’ve seen nothing of her apologizing for (or even acknowledging!) her racism. lol. if you have any please let me know. (and getting a sensitivity writer doesn’t excuse you from offensive writing…)

also: while i acknowledge that female writers get a hell of a lot more flack than male writers (and it IS a problem), it Still doesn’t free female writers from criticism. especially when it’s about their racism. we shouldn’t free male writers from criticism, we shouldn’t free female writers from criticism. they all deserve to be criticized and critiqued. there is no “they may be racist, BUT—!” or at least there Shouldn’t be??

i’m not saying she’s the worst writer, because there are plenty worse than her, but she shouldn’t be made into a saint and her actions shouldn’t be excused. hope this all makes sense?

honestly i think the hunt between different titles is what makes it all so fun? tim’s whole run was defined by crossovers and him appearing in several titles—he was The Fave Guy, The Golden Robin in the 90s/early 2000s!! he appeared everywhere, i have a spreadsheet of his appearances and it’s…extensive. very extensive. and it’s pretty easy to pin down tim’s characterization in the 90s—harder in n52 because they changed his core character so heavily—but his 90s characterization should be used when in discussion with rr09 because they’re the same timeline And Directly Correlate. that’s my biggest complaint/dislike of fanon—they Don’t take into consideration That timeline. it’s all one timeline to most. or it’s just blatantly made up lies (tim taking care of bruce like a parent in their early days???? where did that come from??)

i haven’t read much of rebirth/post-rebirth tim because i’m working through his original run/appearances (and reading several other characters lol)

i think he should get a writer who cares about him but Also cares about his civilian cast—aka probably the Biggest part of tim’s character. his difficulty distinguishing and dividing his time between vigilante and civilian is So interesting. i think they should start with a limited series AFTER a short arc in batman/detective titles (much like his origin+robin i, ii, and iii!) just to get a taste of his newer characterization. and see how fans react. but i’d also be overjoyed if they revamp him with a modernized version of his original characterization/backstory. and either retire him from vigilantism (let him Grow) or give him a new title (Not red robin. let him be free of that fuckass title).

and i mean. i really don’t think it’s Just the fact that he’s fallen off is the reason why people don’t read his recent appearances. it’s comfortability in the false narrative constructed by fanon/fanfiction/(…wfa…) and reading comics requires actual thought and analysis which, in this world, conflicts w instant gratification and the need for easy-to-swallow literature. and confronting ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ i Do hate the fanon perspective of tim. that’s not my guy. i Do hate n52 tim. That’s Not My Guy. i don’t blame fans for only seeing n52 tim but man. he’s so much more interesting in his original state AND there are more comics for him in that era so Why Wouldn’t anyone want to consume More Canon of This Guy? see above.

the complaint ISN’T that his character has been rebooted, it’s that fans are relying on a PRE REBOOT and PRE N52 characterization of tim to defend that he’s “one bad day from becoming a villain”. which is blatantly false. he literally held a gun to his head when he saw his alternate future self as a villain. he would genuinely rather khs than become a villain fym one bad day???? he had a year of bad days and all he did was become more suicidal cmon now….

anyways so op was saying that if you use pre-reboot and pre n52 characterization, you should use the WHOLE characterization, not just a run at the END of the pre-n52 timeline. red robin 2009 was tim at his Lowest mental point. like Beyond rock bottom. and people use his Mental Health Crisis Era as a definitive characterization of him and, frankly, it’s annoying. he had a 183-issue solo beforehand that gives us his whole character. he had a 55-issue group run (yj98 my beloved) that gives us More. tim is So Much More than red robin 09 and op was expressing annoyance towards fans (typically non-comic readers.. not saying that’s you!) who Solely use rr09 (mixed with post reboot/rebirth and some amalgamation made up in their minds…oddly enough) as a “gotcha!” for wild mischaracterization (both with tim AND with the rest of the bats. damian and dick get behind me 🥀🥀)

additionally, just because tim hasn’t had a good SOLO in post-reboot doesn’t mean he hasn’t appeared in other comics! granted, his characterization has mellowed/fallen off and that’s why i’m Personally a pre-52 loyalist. anyways hope that makes sense!

also the way she only refers to him as “pup” in these sections. a phrase that’s dehumanizing and predatory (obviously). ugh. the phrasing is so uncomfortable and the dog allegory is so…disgustingly interesting?? “good/bad girl”, “lapdog”, etc etc. the metaphors are there. it’s very obvious. (and how kon’s face is covered 60%(?) of the time by her. can’t think of the right words. but it’s Saying something to me.)

like guys can we use our thinking caps. maybe let’s not refer to a sa and grooming victim as a “slut” or “womanizer”?? or even take those words Out of our vocabulary in general tbh,,

tbh. wild to me that people constantly assume kon is a slut who is regularly having one night stands when actually he's a flirt who got groomed by a villain, and was in fact very hesitant when she wanted to actually have sex with him.

superboy (1994) #29

there is an article that even says that according to former dc editor frank pittarese, in this arc, "superboy was meant to lose his virginity to knockout" but management vetoed that being explicit in the text. instead, we are left with an incredibly uncomfortable scene of knockout pinning kon down in a bed and making more sex jokes about him as she tries to kill him, while he expresses shock, disbelief, and hurt because he really thought he loved her and she was just using him the entire time.

superboy (1994) #30

now of course interpretations can vary but to me, this scene reads like an allegorical (and frankly, only barely allegorical) depiction of sexual assault, at best. especially given the context of that article, it is very possible to interpret this scene as allegorical rape. at the very least, it is the culmination of a very sexually charged grooming arc.

and i'm not discounting hypersexuality as a trauma response, but i also am aware that the vast majority of people who assume kon is some kind of bimbo slut womanizer, etc., are not doing so in any way related to his trauma. like... idk man. it just feels like a very scummy way to talk about a kid who has been sexually assaulted in canon just because he's flirty.
