“We can decide after we get the hell outta here,” he said, guiding her to the back of the house. 

Dodging drunken bodies, he maneuvered to the left toward the back door. A few people headed in that direction behind them, obviously trying to avoid the police too. One more run in and it would take more than a word from his mother to keep it off of his record, and from the concern in Rey’s eyes, she couldn’t risk it either. 

Finally out of the house, he let out a hearty laugh. As much as he hated being on the run, nothing beat the adrenaline rush of running from the police. 

“Well,” he said between sharp inhales. “Are you on the North or South side?” 

“Oh, you know, it’s going,” he chuckled, offering her his hand again. He missed the contact, but he didn’t dwell on it.  “I think I’m gonna get one more shot in. Wanna join?”

By the frantic movements around them, Ben figured they had been ratted out. Undergrad parties usually ended up with him running back to his dorm, but the idea of leaving Rey made him a little sad. 

“Or we can run. Are you staying on campus,” he questioned, trying to see through the crowd of people rushing toward the back door.

“Oh, you know, it’s going,” he chuckled, offering her his hand again. He missed the contact, but he didn’t dwell on it.  “I think I’m gonna get one more shot in. Wanna join?”

That was when Ben noticed that he still held her hand. Pulling it away almost shyly, he looked down at her. He noticed how bright her eyes were, even in the dim light. Shaking the thought from his head, he offered another smile.

“Can’t be all work and no play,” he chuckled. “But I might not be the best person to take advice from.”

It was true. Ben didn’t know much about Rey other than she was fiercely intelligent, and he had no business messing that up for her.

He shouldn’t be here, but Ben stopped caring about that the second the semester started. Despite the constant begging from his parents, academic probation didn’t phase him. Especially now, eyes locked on a familiar face across the room. 

Rey, he thought her name was. He was surprised to see the eager student at a party like this on a Sunday night. Part of him wanted to approach her, so that’s what he did. Solo was six shots deep by now with even less a mind for consequences. 

“Ben,” he offered his hand in greeting. “Ben Solo. We have a few classes together.”

She was small compared to him, and the shy smile on her lips brought out his own. Ben couldn’t explain in but she might as well have taken his breath away. 

“Nice to meet you too,” he smiled, looking around at the sea of people. “How are you enjoying the party?”

He spoke a little loudly over the music, bass thudding in his chest. It was only a matter of time before the party got busted, but he didn’t mind spending what time was left with Rey. Tilting his head to the side he noticed the bottle of tequila he had been nursing earlier and contemplated just one more shot.

“Thank you,” he murmured, eyes scanning the crew surrounding them until they were met with an almost sneering look from General Hux. 

Gritting his teeth, he pushed forward, focusing on Padme’s body next to his. She was someone, well the only one he could trust, aside from his knights. Her presence helped ground him through the almost overwhelming noise. However, her question came at a surprise, and he didn’t quite know how to answer it. 

“I...”, he started, but he couldn’t finish. He didn’t know, and dwelling on it only made things worse. 

“Can we talk about the children once we return to your chamber,” he quietly requested, grabbing some fruit that he didn’t plan on eating. He didn’t want to have this conversation here.

“Of course,” he agreed, beginning to walk with her to the mess hall. Ren could live without being surrounded by so many people, but he couldn’t find it in him to deny Padme’s request. Eyes scanning the vastness of the stars, he began to think.

“The children are better looked after, have better lives. We support them more than their families could have. It’s a necessary evil,” he stated, eyes not meeting hers.

In all honesty, he never really cared about the program before his grandmother began questioning it. He never really cared about any of it. He was there because of Snoke, because of the Force, and it never crossed his mind that he should think twice about the inter workings of the Order.

“Hux can’t keep his nose where it belongs,” he said bitterly, shaking his head slightly. 

Looking down at Padme, he assessed his hunger. He hadn’t eaten, but he didn’t really eat anymore. If she knew that she’d worry, and he didn’t want to cause her any extra stress right now.

“I have,” he lied, a small crease in his brow. “What have you learned from your readings?” 

He always liked listening to the history she learned and answering any questions she had. It made him feel… welcome. It was an all but foreign feeling, but his grandmother always seemed to radiate it.

“I can handle Hux, don’t worry about him,” Padme commented amused, her eyes never leaving her grandson features. It was so ODD to think of him as her grandson though, considering they were almost the same age; it’d be easier to think of him as her brother she figured but that wasn’t something she wanted to dwell over then–he seemed distressed. 

“I haven’t though, I should get some food. And maybe you can get a little something as well to keep me company? Even if you already ate?” she asked him reaching for his arm and setting hers around it. “Well I’ve been reading about the Empire. I have 60 years to catch up on… We need to do something about the slavery and uhm–the first Order takes children for their ranks? That’s not–That’s not right Ben.”

Removing his helmet, he offered her a small smile in return. 

“I trust you’ve been well,” he prompted, placing his helmet down. “Anything eventful?”

He would never admit it, but he enjoyed his moments with Padme. She was the only family that he had left, the only family that would look him in the eyes now. She was someone he cherished deeply. 

“Have you eaten?”

Padme looked up as he took off that silly helmet. She understood the need for it in Anakin’s case–according to what she had been reading in the holos anyway–but Ben didn’t need any of those theatrics. Convincing him however would take a considerable amount of time.

“Not quite. Hux’s been trying to figure out who I am to no avail. It’s quite fun really,” she commented with a quiet chuckle shaking her head to his next question. “No, I’ve been catching up on my reading and too much in my head. Have you?”
