For everyone else living in the US right now, ESPECIALLY if you’re a person of color and/or an immigrant, please read this and share this!!

These are your rights for if you encounter ICE or just what you should do if you ever encounter ICE

remember, as long as you are physically in the United States you have rights, whether or not you’re an immigrant, INCLUDING undocumented people

Memorize all of your emergency contact’s phone numbers

If you have a child or multiple children, provide their school or daycare with an emergency contact to pick up your child or children

Provide authorization and writing for your emergency contact to make medical and legal decisions for your child or children if something were to happen to you

ICE has an online detainee locator, I’m not sure how accurate it is but nonetheless the URL is https://locator.ice.gov/odls/#/search and share it with your loved ones so if you do get taken your loved ones can use it to find you

If you’re detained, stay calm, don’t run, don’t resist, and don’t argue, keep your hands where the police can see them, and let them know if you’re about to reach into a glove compartment or wallet.

if you’re pulled over in a traffic stop, ask if the police officer is from the police department or immigration because usually immigration officers will often identify themselves as police but they are not police

if they are immigration officers, follow these steps:

If you’re a citizen or you have lawful status, show your passport, legal permanent resident card, work permit, or other documentation of your status

If you are over the age of 18 carry your papers with you at all times

If you are undocumented:

You have the right to remain silent

You do not have to discuss your immigration or citizenship status with the police, immigration officers or other officials

Remember, ANYTHING you tell an officer can later be used against you in an immigration court

If an officer knocks on your door:

Do NOT open the door

Tell your children not to open the door

In order to enter your home an officer needs a warrant signed by a judge

ICE “warrants” are NOT valid warrants, they are signed by ICE officers and not actual judges so you are not legally required to let them into your home without a proper warrant without the consent of the occupants

That warrant MUST have the signature of a judge or it is not valid, keep that in mind

If you need support there is a 24 hour emergency support hotline, it is 1-855 HELP MY FAMILY and the number is 855-435-7693, though that might only be valid for Illinois I will need to find more just in case, please reblog with more hotlines for this if you have any

If you go to an ICE protest, wear a mask, cover your hair and eyes, make sure they can’t recognize you because they have cameras and facial recognition software that could find you and they can use that footage against you, protect your identity above all else, and if possible, do not get violent because again, that can be used against you in a court of law

Stay safe, know your rights, and remember, as long as you are on US soil, YOU HAVE A RIGHT TO BE HERE, IMMIGRANT OR NOT, UNDOCUMENTED OR NOT AND YOU CAN PLEAD THE FIFTH IF ARRESTED BECAUSE YOU HAVE A CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHT TO REMAIN SILENT
