amazing!! thanks for the recourse
tip for improving japanese reading speed!

how about you try some カラオケ???
i've been doing this for a couple years now and i think this has single-handedly made my reading speed in japanese improve to the point of almost being as fast as it is in english (although i still struggle with kanji and katakana sometimes x_x)
to find one, i usually just search on youtube (song name) followed by either カラオケ or ニコカラ. if nobody has made a karaoke for your song of choice, then i'd otherwise search up (song name) followed by 歌詞 (kashi/lyrics) and you'll usually find them that way. i like to use the site utaten.com because they all feature furigana! be a little careful though because while its only happened to me a couple of times, there's been times where the furigana is wrong for one or two words.
i think this is a really fun way to practice especially if you love singing, like i do!! i've never seen anyone else recommend this so i hope this helps

hello everynya-n
this month i started reading visual novels! i had summer pockets reflection blue recommended to me as a first, which is the visual novel in the screenshot, taken by me.
i think im about 5~10 hours in so far. the dialogue is relatively simple as someone at an N3~ level.
personally with my experience so far i really recommend visual novels! for me they're a lot less tiring to read than paper novels, so you can read them for longer and get a lot more reading in. theres also a lot more variety than i first thought there was.
im hoping to finish summer pockets sometime within the next month or so, and after that i'm thinking of trying another key game such as little busters, air, clannad, or rewrite as they all seem highly loved. i'd also like to check out steins gate! i remember i was going to watch the anime years ago, but i never got round to it, lol.
happy studying

these past few days have been so productive!!! my internet has been off for a couple days by now, but on the bright side that enabled me to read even more than i usually would. im about halfway through kimi no na wa as of writing, and im only around 50 pages away from completing my first japanese book, わたしが「わたし」を助けに行こう !! i’m very proud of myself.
behind kimi no na wa is the textbook 留学生の日本語。im sure you can guess from the title, the textbook is specifically for those looking to study abroad in japan. im only at the start but im finding it interesting so far, the edition i have there is the first in the series, ‘writing comprehension’.
ps, sorry for not posting for so long. lol.

misc jpn study tip 2 - vtubers/vtuber clips!

video cred: ワンコ (https://youtu.be/EtTXthxDeao?si=6Sae_PLiUzlohOjF)
so last night while reading, i put on one of 岸堂天真 (きしどてんま)’s eldin ring streams, and i had the thought of making a post about this!
personally im a pretty big vtuber fan, specifically of japanese vtubers. not only are they entertaining, they’re pretty good if you want to get immersion or learn more natural japanese.
but i find that they can also be quite challenging! since the language is so natural, even if you watch to watch the streams it can be hard to understand.
so thats why i recommend starting with vtuber clips! the word for this in japanese is 切り抜き (きりぬき). clips are usually short and precise with subtitles for the main points. i think this makes it an easy starting point!
to find some, search on YT the vtubers name you want, plus 切り抜き. it should come up. also, when you search it you might see 手描き切り抜き (てがききりぬき) as well. as you might be able to guess, it means the creator of the clip also added animation/art alongside the og clip~
here are some official sites for popular vtuber companies, you can scroll through and see if there are any talents that peak your interest ~ (i would include indies as well, but to be honest, i dont really know any indie jp vtubers.)
holostars:
hololive:
nijisanji:
https://www.nijisanji.jp/en/talents
(if you have any other recommendations, feel free to share)
so there you have it ~ i hope this idea is helpful to you? sorry for my pretty long posting break lol
(p.s. if you’re interested in my personal favs, my oshi are kanae, kanade izuru, hanasaki miyabi and meme mashiro. highly recommend)
(p.s. 2 i wrote this while watching a kanade izuru stream hehe)
bye bye ~

🌟 Learning Japanese 🇯🇵
🔔 あたしのガイドは、人が英語を話す向けー (◔‿◔)
The following guide is based on my personal experience. I am not an authority on the matter and I am still barely a beginner regarding Japanese.
What am I doing?
Learning languages seems non-lienar and that's partly true (at an intermediate level). But, when you're first starting out, there's generally clear goals to work toward.
Your Beginner Goals
Study and master kana
Japanese employs hiragana and katakana in conjunction with kanji. Together, hiragana and katakana make up kana.
Learn the kana (hiragana and katakana)
Learn the difference between kunyomi and onyomi (kanji)
Delve into grammar and establish some foundational vocab
Immerse yourself with input content (movies, shows, etc)
Study and practice a basic form of "pitch accent"
Continue developing your vocab and particle knowledge
Learn about polite versus casual talk and social culture
Use the language (letters, blog, diary, etc)
Seek conversations to apply the language properly
Find and study tests like JLPT to gauge your progress
What can I use?
Duolingo
If this was your first pick, you're naive but not foolish. It'll teach you enough to get help if you're lost in Japan. But it won't be enough to hold a conversation. Give it a try and see if it works for you. Duolingo is free.
I recommend using Duolingo as a supplementary learning tool rather than your primary learning tool
Textbooks and Guides
Many learners and even classes praise numerous textbooks. I for one received a recommendation for Tae Kim's Japanese Guide. So, I'll recommend it to you. Don't be afraid to see out other guides or attempt some textbooks. However, one should always remember that the textbook is NOT demonstrative of naturalistic Japanese.
For example, 「私は猫が好きです」 is what a textbook correctly teaches, though 「猫好きだよ」 is acceptable and more natural in casual Japanese
Building vocabulary
If you want to develop your vocabulary, you can use JLPT anki decks. Anki is a flashcard program for desktop and mobile. You can also use anki in conjunction with a dictionary like Jisho to create new flashcards decks (suited to the words you'd like to learn). You may also pick up vocab from Japanese media (i.e, anime, manga, books, content creators, music, etc).
If you're using Jisho and want to find a word you only know in English, search for it using quotation marks. For example, "school" or, if you want a verb "to learn" ~ it should help. You can spell out Japanese words normally by just typing... i.e, watashi.
Good input versus Bad input
Immersing yourself in Japanese media and culture is good but you need to be mindful of the content you're consuming— take note of the context behind events, interactions, or the relationship of speakers. Be especially mindful of anime and manga— both are known to use hyperbolic language or phrases that aren't commonly used in day to day conversation. Fortunately, some anime and manga do use everyday language, and you can usually find lists.
I recommend using the Tofugu blog to learn about both Japanese language and culture. But if you don't like reading, there are many YT channels like Kaname Naito and NihongoDekita with Sayaka. For general immersion though, here's a sweet vlog channel, a JP Warframe creator, and a natural born otaku.

🫧🧋 movie recommendation for N4~N3 japanese learners: サイダーのように言葉が湧き上がる

🫧
are you looking for a movie to get you into watching more japanese content? i think 「サイダーのように言葉が湧き上がる」 or "Words Bubble Up Like Soda Pop" is a great contender!
"Words Bubble Up Like Soda Pop is a sweet and vibrant film about human connection and the way music and words can tie us to each other across years, across insecurities, and more." -- review by kate sanchez on rotten tomatoes
🧋
i personally found this movie very easy to sit through, the language is quite casual and simple to interpret for things i didn't understand. i would think this would also be easy for those who are N4 or starting to study for N3. on top of that its a very fun movie to sit through!
the only problem i had is that one of the movie's main characters, cherry, is a haiku poet, therefore the movie includes various haiku poems. personally i had some trouble understanding them so i had to turn english subtitles back on for them. they actually don't happen very often though!
words bubble up like soda pop is a cute love story available on netflix, perfect for japanese learners to start watching more japanese movies and shows!! if you have already watched the movie, i'd love to know ur thoughts~ and if not i hope this recommendation fits for you >_<

study diary - 1
this is my first post here on my sideblog, oshistudy. my main is @oshidorifuufu, but since i want to center that blog around vents, art and general text posts i've decided to move my study diaries here. im so organised!
click to read my entry !!
today was actually a pretty productive day. even though i fell asleep at almost 3am last night, i woke up around 7am and got up around 8. i made a to do list for myself and almost everything has gotten ticked off!
the photo of the book is actually mine, of course. the book is 「わたしが「わたし」を助けに行こう」 or "watashi ga "watashi" wo tasuke ni ikou", by hashimota shota. it's actually quite a simple read for a self-help/psychology book. i'm having more trouble reading the fiction books i own.
although at the point i'm at theres a couple pages i just wasn't understanding, so i'm going to go back to them tomorrow. i've used the pink sticky thing to indicate that.
later today i watched an episode of the NHK's 「見えるぞ!ニッポン」 (mieruzo! nippon) tv series. it was aired over 14 years ago and is aimed at kids but it's actually a pretty good show for intermediate learners, plus you learn about japan's prefectures, which is invaluable knowledge if you ever plan on going to japan. the episode i watched covered 新潟県 (niigata prefecture) and mainly covered their rice production.
after this i am going to exercise (it's a little silly but im gonna follow the exercise kanae makes kuzuha do in one of the chronior episodes, cuz it's actually kinda hard..also kanae.) brush my teeth, clean my face and go to bed. then my to do list will be completely checked off. ah, great satisfaction
