This made me…feel things…

The true essence of the fruit being completely imprisoned, with only a poor substitute put on a pedestal for onlookers to see. And yet, even if they see the statue, they still don’t understand the TRUE nature of the fruit, just the general dimensions.

We put so much emphasis on the realism of art, and yet the most abstract smattering of paint on a canvas will make us feel closer to the original subject than even the most realistic, austere piece.

However, the problem isn’t with realism, it’s the STAUNCHNESS of it all. The statue has no color, no texture, NOTHING. And yet you can seen the fuzziness of the yellow fruit trapped within, the creases, the imperfect dimensions.

I feel that this may be speaking to the emphasis that we put on realism, in perfection, but not actually making you feel or remember anything. Just a poor copy of the Form, the essence, of the fruit.

In other words, even the scratchiest, most imperfect, cartoon-y art, if it makes someone feel something, is better than the most rigorous but soulless portraits and landscapes.

GOD I always forget how much I love Columbo, thank you for drawing one of my favorite old boys!

Out of curiosity, is what he’s smoking weed, or is it just a green cigarette? Because, frankly, the idea of Columbo being high and managing to still be better than the entire police force is HILARIOUS.

I love when an artist is like “I didn’t like how this turned out :(“ and then they proceed to show the most beautiful, complex, want-to-gnaw-on art you’ve ever seen in your life.
