The Eye Thing - PART 5 (2022)

Let's end this story on a positive note! This scene is pretty much how I imagine Gossan and Slate's relationship is. They dislike being around one another, but you can feel that they were actual friends at some point. I feel like, when the time is right, they can act right and actually be a team, but they have so much baggage that they can just barely stand each other. I also feel like Gossan would be the one starting the fights more often, and Slate being the one not letting go afterwards. I don't think they were ever very close. Mostly having Feldspar as a friend in common. But I feel like they wish that sometimes, they both wish to be back in a time where they tolerated each other. Life would be just easier this way.

Hornfels is not one for superstition. But sometimes...

I know I am currently posting old comics, but I'm also gonna post the new ones!

I felt the need to draw a quick comic, something light hearted and wholesome. I had this little idea for a while, and finally decided to draw it.

the Hornfels, Hal and Hatchy relationship is something I like to think about. I think everyone had their little emotional support when Feldspar disappeared. Slate had Mica, Gossan had Porphy, and Hornfels had Hal and Hatchy!

I started this piece shortly after I got home from LBX where one of the pieces of feedback I got was to take more time planning my piece and to not get attached to one composition before you've had the chance to try a few iterations of the idea.

So I really, really took my time working out a few drafts before I settled on the one that eventually became this piece and dear god that took so long. I spent nearly 2 weeks on JUST drafts. I normally only spend 2 days max planning a piece and that usually just involves moving things around and resizing things to try and get a good composition. This time I completely nuked my sketches (not actually, just hid them so I had a blank canvas) and tried completely different compositions. I also (for once) did some color tests before starting my final piece (my color composition can still use some work fkdslkfs). But also, this concept was just very difficult to execute because I really, really wanted to include music in the piece because it was my favorite part of the game, but it's also really, really difficult to work it into the piece in a way that looks good.

All in all, a good exercise and I'm pretty happy with how the piece came out! With time I will eventually make a habit of spending more time on the planning stage of my illustrations rather than just plowing through the first idea I have hehe

^ first time drawing nomai. admittedly i only ever draw humans so drawing them is out of my comfort zone

^ travelers minus their helmets? i'm not 100% on it tbh...

^ in my headcanon, gossan and feldspar are siblings ::) i value their relationship

^ i wonder if solanum (and by extension the nomai) would find riebeck's extra fingers fascinating? 🤔

^ i personally feel hal is underappreciated, i couldn't have found out everything that i did without their help on the translation device. i want to show them everything i ever discovered.

^ *shipping jumpscare* i love these two sm... they make me soft 🥺 it's awful (affectionate)

^ based on something i wrote i wanted to put to vision. i just liked the idea of the nomai having snowball fights with the snow of brittle hollow. :P maybe they let the students up there when the moon isn't spitting meteors.
