Why the Monster High Community Should Include LGBTQA+, And How it Already Does

     For any who don’t know, there was some drama recently regarding how the LGBT+ community should/should not be involved in the Monster High community. Things that were said to me and others was that “gay people weren’t put into Monster High for a reason” and that “Monster High isn’t for [the LGBT community][basically messing it up.]” The Monster High series was made by members of the LGBT+ community and encompasses the belief that everyone should love themselves for who they are, and it is time for the fanbase to pick up the same mentality and provide a safe space for everyone regardless of sexuality and gender identity.

     Now as a response to that, I point to the creators of Monster High.  Monster High was created by Garrett Sander, with illustrations by Kellee Riley and illustrator Glen Hanson. Glen Hanson, the man who created the original concept art of the original Monster High cast is openly gay. If you look at his art, you can see that the Monster High style came from his style! The amazing art and looks we have now originated from this talented artist who just so happens to be gay.

     Many of the voice actors as well support the LGBT+ community. Cam Clarke, the voice of the characters Deuce Gorgon and Heath Burns, is an openly gay man. He voices characters from cartoons to anime and has created an album called “Inside Out,” an album full of classic love songs sung from the gay perspective.

     By saying that gay/lgbt does not belong in Monster High, you are claiming the parts of the building blocks of this franchise do not exist.

     The main catch phrases of Monster High are “be yourself. be unique. be a monster” and “embrace your freaky flaws” as well as to spread kindness, as many of the episodes and movies illustrate. This promotes a safe and inclusive environment for everyone, especially those for are discriminated against. In the show they have welcomed so many characters that considered themselves freaks. For example, Andy Beast, who would turn into a huge version of himself, and even Kala Mer’ri, who had attacked and destroyed the school! They even show support for mental illnesses, with Ghoulia giving of an autistic vibe to many fans. Now after all that, do you really expect me and others to believe that they would turn down someone based off their sexuality/gender identity? That they would discriminate against the LGBTQA+ community after having such a diverse cast? It is outrageous.

     All in all the declaration that the LGBT+ community should take no part in the Monster High community is a slap in the face to all they have worked for. I really hope that creators and people who have this opinion rethink what they believe and take a step back to think about what Monster High and its message really is about.
