Have you ever caught a glimpse of an American pika (Ochotona princeps)? This small North American mammal is a relative of rabbits and inhabits rocky slopes at high elevations. It’s well adapted to chilly temperatures and spends the warmer months foraging for flowers to build up “haypiles” of food near its den in preparation for winter. It sometimes makes hundreds of foraging trips in one day—particularly in late summer—and generally selects plants that have more protein and are higher in water content.
