“You look beautiful.” Your head turned swiftly at the sound, drawn as though by instinct. Familiarity crashes into you, and with it, the breath you hadn’t realized you’d been holding finally escapes your lungs.

“Taehyun,” his name fell from your lips like a hymn. Of all the lessons they forced upon you, all the names and titles committed to memory, his was the one truth your heart would never forget. “You came.”

He remained where he was, as if the very sight of you had rendered him still. You moved, not with grace but with desperation, as though your soul had caught fire. He was still out of reach, yet you already felt his embrace, the ghost of his hands pressed over your skin on your countless nights.

“I knew you would look this beautiful,” he murmurs, the words barely rising above a breath. He leans in as soon as your body met his, burying his face in your hair, heedless of the silken pins or the hours of preparation. The scent of jasmine and fear clings to him now, and he lets it. None of it matters. Not when your sorrow carves itself down his cloak; stiff, and now stained with the truth of you. The emblem of the crown catches your tears like a confession.

He holds you tighter. For when he crossed the threshold, ironclad boots echoing in a hall meant to keep you caged, he broke every vow but one.

“Run away with me,” he breathes, his voice shaking, heart laid bare and offered in your hands. “Run away with me, princess.”
