I am a highly silly person in an often-silly world. I am very proudly a marching band geek and a brother of Kappa Kappa Psi. I love music probably more than is healthy for me, and I also love various arts. I am such a big fan of a lot of different things... I hope we can be friends. :D tags: about my face#shut up allie - poetry, songwriting, etc.

Goddess of the Old Ways
Sometimes I want to be a goddess
but not the fluffy white clouds
Mt. Olympus, feathered attendants,
ambrosia, golden light, & stardust
type of goddess.
I want to be a creature of the Black Forest
ragged, raspy, growling, spitting
with blood & bones caught in her teeth
sticks in her hair, wild-eyed, dangerous
type of goddess.
My worshippers leave me offerings
near my stagnant little pond
on an altar blanketed in moss
so I'll bless their goats and babies
type of goddess.
The village children, cats, & dogs
all know my hut on stilts and
are the only ones who tread the path
winding through sculpted trees & beehives
type of goddess.
My medicine isn't for the stupid men
or the subservient women
but for the humble men, bended knee
and the vicious women, spear in hand
type of goddess.
Do not enter my realm with arrogance
for I'm a creature of nature, of myth,
human, earthly, & avoided rightly
unless you have the proper sacrifice
type of goddess.

Phoenix Gets Greater
Hi everyone - PHOENIX GETS GREATER was on my TBR for a long time, and I'm here to tell you that it made me weepy. I loved it, and here's the review with why! Thanks for looking!
Phoenix didn’t have any friends who liked hockey, trucks, and bulldozers. He made friends with those who liked dolls and dancing too. But sometimes, other kids made fun of Phoenix because he preferred dolls to trucks. They thought he was strange because he didn’t act like the rest of the boys in their class. Unpaginated Introduction Aanii boozhoo nwiijkiwehnak! Today’s book has been on my TBR…

Mascot
Aanii boozhoo kina wiiyaa - today's book is the incredible MASCOT by Charles Waters and Traci Sorrell. It's a fabulous middle grade read in prose and I highly recommend to anyone who even remotely enjoys reading. :) Gichi miigwech for reading!
Introduction Where I come from,Cherokee people are everywhere. But here, no one sees the Cherokee in me at all.Doesn’t seem like anyone knows there are Native peopleliving, working, and breathing in Rye,in all these other cities, and in Washington, DC. p. 27 Welcome back, friends! Today’s book is a special one. I first encountered it at ALA Annual 2023 in Chicago and was super-geeked to meet the…

NOT RECOMMENDED: Call Me Ahnighito
Aanii boozhoo, happy new year! Here's a post about a picture book I found in our collection. It's not a great bit of representation but is an important example of what Indigenous imagery looks like without Indigenous agency. Thanks for reading!
Introduction Aanii boozhoo nwiijkiwenhak! Welcome to a new year, and welcome back. Today we’re going to be talking about a book that I stumbled on in our collection. From Publishers Weekly: As an author’s note explains, Ahnighito is the name of the enormous meteorite now housed in New York City’s Museum of Natural History, transported there from the North Pole in 1897. Conrad (The Tub People)…

The Unbeatable Lily Hong
New year, new blog post! It's been a bit, but I wanted to get back into the swing of things with this adorable story from Diana Ma. THE UNBEATABLE LILY HONG was so darn cute! Thanks for looking!
Introduction Happy New Year friends, and welcome back! Today’s book is a NetGalley pick, and what a good one it was. IRL: The International Indigenous Librarians Forum
It's been a little bit since I've posted on my blog! I promise it's been for a good reason - here's my write up about the International Indigenous Librarians Forum. Thank you for reading!
Aanii boozhoo nwiijkiwenhak! It’s been quite a while, but I have a great reason for being gone for so long. This is going to be a super-long post about the 12th International Indigenous Librarians Forum. A lot of my time in October and November was spent getting ready to attend and then actually attending this incredible event. There’s too much to cover in one post, but I wanted to share a little…

Autumn Peltier, Water Warrior
Aanii boozhoo kina wiiyaa - here is my review about the beautiful AUTUMN PELTIER: WATER WARRIOR, written by Carole Lindstrom and illustrated by Bridget George. Gichi miigwech for reading!
I am nibi. I have a spirit. I have feelings. I remember. p. 1 Introduction Aanii boozhoo! Today, I’m reviewing Carole Lindstrom’s latest picture book, Autumn Peltier, Water Warrior. I should have expected that I needed tissues when reading this one – heed my words and have some on hand, because this one made me cry. A summary from the publisher: Indigenous women have long cared for the land…

Field of Screams
Aanii boozhoo, I'm back! Here's a book from over the summer that I'm finally posting. I'm glad to be back, gichi miigwech for reading!
Introduction Aanii boozhoo kina wiiyaa! I’m back after a break! I know I said beginning of October for my return, but let’s just call it me being on Indian Time, hehe. I’m back with a selection that was published over the time I was gone – it’s very appropriate for my favorite month out of the year. Field of Screams is a debut novel from Wendy Parris for middle grade readers. From the…

IRL: Still here, I promise!
A small update about where I've been - tl;dr busy, as always, but with some cool stuff coming up!
Hello everyone! Thank you for your patience – real life work has brought a lot of changes and added responsibilities, which means I haven’t had as much time as I’d like to write here about new books I’m reading. To catch up and make more of a backlog, I’m going to pause book reviews until the beginning of October. Instead, you can catch me virtually and in-person doing some cool stuff! Tomorrow…

The International House of Dereliction
INTERNATIONAL HOUSE OF DERELICTION was overall a fun read about a fiercely loved and loving girl named Alice. This story is definitely going to appeal to my younger patrons! Gichi miigwech for reading!
Alice rocked back on her heels and sighed with satisfaction. She had taken this one thing, this one most important thing in the House – for everyone knows that the fireplace is the heart of any house – and fixed something broken and made it like new. There was no better feeling in the world. Chapter 4 Introduction Welcome back! This week we’re looking at Jacqueline Davies’ new middle grade…

Give Me a Sign
I loved this story so much - GIVE ME A SIGN by Anna Sortino was a wonder and I'm gonna recommend it to literally everyone. Gichi miigwech for reading!
And maybe, if the loss were profound, my family would be forced to finally take learning American Sign Language seriously. I’d seem “deaf enough” that my classmates would truly understand my need for all those school accommodations, rather than silently judge and question me. Because right now, they know I’m not hearing, but I don’t fit their expectations of deafness, either. It’s a strange…

All the Dead Lie Down
ALL THE DEAD LIE DOWN is an ARC I should have read a while ago, but I'm very glad I did now! Please check it out from your library, and as always gichi miigwech for reading.
She fled to the small bathroom that adjoined her room and turned on the cold water full blast. She first scrubbed the blood off her palms, her movements rough. Then she dunked her entire head under, letting the chilling water wash over her. Cold water always helped her come back to her body when she was on the brink of a panic attack. It grounded her here and now, pulling her back from her…

IRL: ALA Annual 2023!
Popping in to say - if you're going to be in Chicago, say hi!
Hi all! Pardon the radio silence around here – June has seen a lot of great things, including some high school graduations for my youngest siblings and preparations for DC Public Library’s summer learning program Discover Summer. This weekend, I’ll be at ALA’s Annual Conference in Chicago! I’ll be there from June 22-27 as a part of this year’s Emerging Leaders cohort. Feel free to stop by the…
