Some observations/theories on Altered Echoes

I have not stopped thinking about the teaser for this game-I’ve gone back to rewatch it a few times, and I’ve noticed some interesting things. I also have a couple theories on the meaning of the title, and what it means for the game’s story.

Firstly, the door in the teaser is NOT the same door as the one at the end of the hall from LN II.

Not sure about anyone else but I thought they were the same initially. The door seems to be just a generic one in the Signal Tower. It doesn’t have a knob, which may or may not mean something. More on that in a second.

Secondly, the teaser hallway is somewhat similar to the hallway right before Six’s room in the Tower.

This is a bit of a stretch; it’s not an exact match. The branching hallway isn’t present and neither are the toys. However, the concrete flooring is the same and both doors lack knobs. The paneling on the doors is also quite similar.

The door in the teaser leads into the music box room, which has what appears to be a wooden floor. This is a direct match to LN II-the concrete hallway there transitions into the wooden flooring of Six’s room.

I also noticed, as the teaser transitions from the hallway to the music box shot, there are objects visible on the sides of the screen. They are EXTREMELY difficult to make out due to the lower quality and smoky border, but they are there.

They are much easier to see in the actual teaser, trust me.

It’s near impossible to tell what these are, but to me they look vaguely like toys. Potentially confirming this is Six’s room (if the music box wasn’t enough, lol).

I also want to briefly mention the scream at the end, since it’s a big part of the teaser. If it is Monster Six, it’s not one of (or a cut out part of one of) her existing screams. Not from what I can tell. Doesn’t mean it’s not her, it probably is, but it could confirm Monster Six is getting new sounds (which makes sense).

Finally, the title. I have so many thoughts on it.

I’m pretty confident this will be a game about Six’s time in the Tower. I can’t imagine any other storytelling they could do with the Tower other than revealing the mystery of “What exactly did Six go through while she was there?” That combined with the heavy emphasis on Six’s music box and, by extension, Monster Six, I’m almost certain this will be a game about Six’s perspective of LN II’s ending and her transformation; whether that’s literally playing as Six or playing as another kid who just so happens to be in the Signal Tower and allies themself with Six (which I find unlikely).

With that in mind, my first thought of the title is that it’s a metaphorical representation of the changes Six undergoes in the Tower: “altered” literally referencing her physical change, and “echoes” referring to the way her music box literally echoes throughout the Signal Tower. Together, “altered echoes” could be referencing how the tune of Six’s music box changes from a comfort (at the beginning of the game) to a corruption, which further references Six’s transformation into a monster and her attachment to the music box.

I also wanna bring up the teaser’s description here, because I think it provides a huge hint that would otherwise be missed:

Every step echoes closer... does this tune sound familiar, little ones?

Mainly I find the former half important. When I think of echoing steps my thoughts initially jump to Thin Man. It reminds me of the way his footsteps boom when he chases you, and the way the latter half of his theme emphasizes his steps.

This makes me think that we’ll be playing as Six trying to escape from Thin Man in the Tower. Thinking about the scene in LN II where Six calls for Mono’s help through the TV and Thin Man grabs her, this seems like a logical idea for what Six could’ve spent her time doing in the Tower.

“Echoes” reminds me of something else, however: Mono’s calls.

In the Signal Tower, Mono’s calls for Six echo off the walls.

In Six’s boss fight, Mono’s calls turn into aggressive yells that echo loudly.

I think “Altered Echoes” is primarily referring to Six’s changed perception of Mono during the ending of the game.

A VR game, where the player can’t really get a good look at what their character looks like, would provide an excellent opportunity to show off how Six sees Mono as someone who’s taking away her peace and safety without realizing she’s turned into a monster. The teaser description could still allude to Thin Man and potentially fleeing from him, but could also allude to Mono himself. Specifically, how his footsteps, as he traverses the Tower to get to Six, echo loudly in her perspective. The approaching footsteps of someone who, despite being a friend, will most certainly want to take you away from your newfound happiness.

It’s still so, so early to tell for sure what this game is going to be or what its story is going to be. I would like to think it’ll be about Six’s time in the Tower, but I suppose we won’t know for sure until we get more information.
