Did you know? The tomato was first grown in what is now Mexico and South and Central America. Many Mexican tomatoes were yellow—Europeans called them “golden apples”—though red ones, possibly imported from South America, were also available.
See what else was available in an Aztec market in Our Global Kitchen.

Everyday Discoveries
Last week I visited the Everyday Discoveries exhibition which was part of the Helsinki World Design Capital 2012 programme. Even though I didn't find the exhibition particularly inspiring, here are some food related things that caught my eye:
Tumblr media
Kitchen towels from Estonia. They had the recipes for Carrot Caviar and Lard Paté printed on them.
Tumblr media
Kitchen design from Italy: Snaidero Venus Kitchen that, according to the text that accompanied the model, "has been created to 'stir emotion and evoke passion'". Hard to tell whether this is true or not but I do like the colour and the fact that the work areas are at different heights.

This picture is from the Finnish part of the exhibition - the reason why I wanted to include this is because it showcased a kitchen towel that I recently got as a house warming gift from some friends of mine:

Here's the towel in full view. It's called "Kissanpäivät" (literally it means cat days but it could be translated as "Lazy Days") and has been designed by Kristiina Haapalainen and Sami Vähä-Aho.
Tumblr media
Chopping Block and Mortar from France, designed by Sylvie Amar Studio.
Tumblr media
A stove from Belgium that has been designed to make the heating of take-away and ready-meals easier and safer.
Tumblr media
The middle part of the biggest room was dedicated to table settings from different countries. I found this setting from Croatia to be the funniest and quite depicting of especially student life.
Tumblr media
Classics from Finland and Italy: the red plastic bottle has been in production since 1965 and is used by Finnish children when they go camping; Bialetti's coffee maker was designed in 1933.
Tumblr media
Iceland had chosen a pancake pan as one of their classics. The text says that pancakes are an important part of Icelandic food culture and that every home has a special pan that is used to make them.

Trip down food memory lane: foods that I ate on my lovely trip to Philly in 2010
From top to bottom, left to right: homemade veggie cheesesteak, veggie lasagne at the Reading Terminal Market, Jones's veggie burger, red velvet cupcake, falafel with extra hummus from Maoz, my first ever frozen yogurt, gnocchi in tomato sauce, up-side-down pizza, falafel from a street vendor at penn campus, and my first ever tater tots.
