Saturday night July 20th - it's an overnight power walk through the streets of NYC, in a crazy bra, to help fight breast cancer. My name is Pam and I'm a mom with two teenage boys living in NYC, very interested in staying fit and healthy. I've been involved in bringing The MoonWalk to New York City on Saturday July 20th. This is an overnight Power Walk where thousands of women (and men!) will do a full or half marathon through the city streets, wearing a crazy bra, all to raise awareness/funds to help ensure that everyone who needs help gets it - no matter what their circumstances are. The MoonWalk been super successful overseas for the past 15 years, with $126,000,000 raised to date. In this blog, we'll be tracking the progress of people who are in training for The MoonWalk NYC, find out more about why they are walking and what's keeping them motivated and having fun. We'll post training tips, info about what to walk in, suggestions on safety while training, and insight and inspiration from Nina Barough, the founder of Walk the Walk, the organizing charity behind The MoonWalk. I hope that you will consider joining us for a super fun, totally inspiring summer night in NYC. To learn more and to register - www.WalktheWalkAmerica.com

Ready, set, GO!
Everyone is getting very very very pumped for The MoonWalk tomorrow. The team is setting up on Randall's Island in very sunny 100+ degree weather. Despite these somewhat Dante's Inferno conditions, they are fantastically upbeat and excited about the Walk tomorrow night.

Ok - so I finally decorated my bra last night. Shaye and Alex, on The MoonWalk team, showed me how to make some very nice flowers....
They've made some gorgeous bras for many of our walkers. Brandi Chastain bra is --- amazing!

Time to decorate your bra!
We may be Rock STARS!! Here is Arlene's bra - although it's not the "official Maidenform bra" - it came out really nicely and hopefully our team members can get our act in gear and come up with something to match.

Maidenform has great ideas and images here at http://pinterest.com/maidenform/moonwalk-nyc-bra-decorating-inspiration/.
And - they sponsored and covered the Bra Decorating party at Organic Avenue earlier this week! https://twitter.com/Maidenform/status/354722918212706305/photo/1

Pedestrian Bridge over the Hudson!
Who knew? Now that I am getting back on my feet, we did a great walk over the Walkway over the Hudson - which is an railroad crossing that's been turned into a pedestrian bridge. At 212 feet tall and 1.28 miles long, it is the longest elevated pedestrian bridge in the world! If you park on the NY side in Poughkeepsie (for $5 in the lot on Parker) - you can walk over the bridge and then keep walking forever - fantastic trails through Highland. For more info - check out http://www.walkway.org.
Back in town - had a great lunch at a classic Greek dinner near the Vassar campus called Julie's (thanks to Margie and Harrison for the recommendation).
I would recommend this as a great day trip from NYC - 1.45 hour drive up the Taconic to Poughkeepsie - park your car, walk over the bridge and beyond, come back drive over to Julie's, then down the Hudson 1/2 hour to Beacon and check out the amazing DIA: Beacon museum. You could also easily do this on the train.
Here's a look south - towards the "Mid-Hudson" bridge - normal bridge for cars, etc.

Yummmmm! Very healthy, right? I didn't take a photo of the french fries drenched in cheese and gravy. My husband ordered those. I may have had a few....

Back in the Villa Borghese
Don't tell my surgeon, but I did an hour power walk this morning in the Villa Borghese with a wonderful woman I'm working with here in Rome. Livia is a totally kick-ass entrepreneur who runs her own market research firm with offices in Milan and Rome, and does work all over the world.

Comfort Devotion - mmmmmmmmmm
A lot of people - both female and male - are curious about the bra we will be walking in. Well, I can tell you - this is the most comfortable thing I've ever worn. Seriously, it is the softest fabric ever, feels like you are wrapped in cashmere, but super supportive. It's from Maidenform and it's from their Comfort Devotion line.

Here is Gigi showing off her new bra. Of course, the Maidenform bra just forms the foundation for the night. How you rock it is all up to you!

Love this one that Hoda has:
I like this one I saw from an artist on Etsy.

Maureen's Dream Team hits Central Park
Maureen's Dream Team spent Saturday doing a 17-mile power walk in Central Park. Here - from left - Maureen, Carol, Arlene and Michelle - posing in front of one of the outdoor ads for The MoonWalk.
Haven't signed up yet? There's still time to join us!
I had knee surgery on Tuesday (meniscus tear), but will be back in training shortly. I walked to/from Union Square from Tribeca yesterday - maybe a mile or two? #progress...!!

Sunday walk with Maureen's Dream Team
Jump on board and join our team! Check out two of the amazing women on Maureen's Dream Team - Arlene and Michelle!

This weekend, we went north up the west side of Manhattan, right along the Hudson River. It was a great opportunity to experience the sights and sounds we will enjoy during The MoonWalk, albeit in sunlight. My tally was 12 miles. Have you used the new MoonWalk app yet?
My mother's day breakfast - spinach and goat cheese omelette - I was dreaming about it after hour one of the 3 1/2 hour walk....

La Roma!
Working on a project that took me to Rome last week. What does that mean? Some gorgeous power walks through "The Eternal City"!!
I roamed everywhere in the city - below - the Pantheon, PIazza Navona, through the Villa Borghese (with my lovely Italian amica Livia) and of course, finally - a well-deserved Campari and soda...

Sunday on the East River

At long last! Springtime in NYC!
Here's a photo of the Williamsburg Bridge (the way we keep the order straight in our family is BMW - Brooklyn, Manhattan and Williamsburg). It will be one of the views we'll see along The MoonWalk course on July 20th!
While I walked today, I listened to "The Italian Culture Show" a free podcast with language lessons with two funny hosts - an American woman and a very very funny Italian guy. Their rapport is terrific and I could practice my Italian out loud while I walked and not be too embarrassed. Bravissima!

Walking in Barcelona
Spent the last week in Barcelona with my best friend from college who is living there with her family for a year. It rained, rained, rained every day, literally never stopped - gatos y perros! - so most of what we did involved good wine and great food.
BUT, we did get some beautiful walks in. One was a steep two-hour hike above the city - the views were incredible.

Another walk took us on an 8 mile loop around the city, down to the beach and back up las Ramblas and out to the Diagonal. At least the surfers were enjoying the weather. That is the W Hotel in the background - awesome hang out in good weather.

You are more beautiful than you think.
If you haven't gotten the chance yet, take a few minutes to watch the "Real Beauty Sketches" from Dove - where a forensic artist sketches a person as they describe themselves, and then makes a second sketch based on how another person describes them. Of course, there is a significant difference, with the second sketch showing a woman that is much prettier and happier. Watching the videos moved me to tears, when I think about how hard we are on ourselves - how super critical.
Some critics have said - oh, so it's still all about our looks - can't we be awesome no matter which of those sketches we actually look like?
Oh!!! And watch this spoof - basically, men "less beautiful than they think".

Shoes & Socks
A lot of people have been asking me about what kind of shoe they should be wearing for their training walks. Click here for some detailed information.
One good place to go is Jack Rabbit - which has stores on the UES, UWS as well as on 14th Street. They use a treadmill and video to analyze your pace and make recommendations, then you can try out several pairs and see which feel the best.
I'm very high maintenance about my socks. (I recently made my friend in California send my favorite "left" one home to me that had mysteriously snuck into her luggage while she was visiting...)
I look for low-cut ones that are anatomical (left and right), have a bit of padding in the right places - like for arch support, but are made out of great fabric that handles moisture/friction. Not too thin, and not thick/bunchy. I like when the ankle comes up in the front/back to prevent chafing. Asics makes good ones - they are about $10 and up per pair. These in the photo even have a "horizontal lace pad' - nice!

8 miles turn into 15?

We ended up having so much to talk about that our planned 8-mile power walk turned into 15+ for some of our more hardy and experienced walkers. We covered a range of neighborhoods in Manhattan, up and over the Williamsburg bridge, through a deeply Orthodox neighborhood and to the Brooklyn Flea at Fort Greene. Coffee, doughnuts, and - oh - I did buy a terrific necklace. We were having so much fun we ended up walking over the Manhattan Bridge and back to our respective homes. Water. Advil. Knees being iced.

Saturday - Walking to the Brooklyn Flea!
I like a walk that combines great sights (Hudson, East River, Williamsburg Bridge) and commerce (vintage clothes, crafts, artisinal food/drinks). Feel like joining me? We're starting around 7:30/8:00am on Saturday 4/20 at Laight/West Side Highway - it's about 8 miles to Fort Greene!
