[ID: A digital drawing of Colin Robinson, Laszlo Cravensworth, Nadja of Antipaxos, and Nandor the Relentless drawn in a simplified style. Colin is standing with his arms at his side and smiling, Laszlo has a neutral expression and is holding a pipe with one hand and his other arm wrapped around Nadja's waist, Nadja is smiling with one arm around Laszlo's shoulders and the other at her side, and Nandor is standing with his fingers touching in front of him, the rest of his arms under his cape, and he is looking at his friends. They are all colored in the colors of the pansexual flag, and the background is muted pink and teal. end ID]

“But what the talk shows don’t show, and the newspapers seldom report, is that a growing number of young people between, say, fifteen and thirty, are scrawling with a fuck-it flair NONE OF THE ABOVE across their sexual identity multiple choice tests. They are gathering in pot-filled corners out of the main media glare of the sexual arena, to let down their hair into an androgynous tangle of pretty boys in tightly-fit velvet pants and together-girls on motor bikes, with an open-ended attitude of genuinely caring for each other but I-don’t-care-what-you-call-me, polymorphous perverse, any thing-that-feels-good-goes pansexuality. This is the Third Sex.” “Call them what you like: acid-mutants, high-heeled boys, fag hags, communal-livers, group gropers, switch-hitters; they don’t care. Members of the third sex think of themselves as being neither Real Men nor Real Women, gay nor straight, married nor single. For the third sex, the words homo- and heterosexual are adjectives used to describe acts and relationships, not nouns to classify people forever and for good. Whether physically girlish boys or boyish girls, the members of the third sex are attracted to people, their auras, vibrancies, minds and good looks, not to genders. Fuck genders. Make love to people.” “Couldn’t that pretty boy over there give just as good a blow-job as his pretty girlfriend, and if you are more into him as a person, or more into her as a person, or into both of them as a couple, well, what difference does it make? If you give birth to a baby, and then fall in love with another woman, why can’t you go live with her and your baby? If you father a child, why can't you and your boyfriend (and your girlfriend, and his, even) raise the child? These pansexual attitudes are an expression of that basic American instinct: Don’t fence me in.”
The way pansexuality is discussed here is a sort of mix of the "regardless of gender” understanding of pansexuality and the conceptualization of pansexuality as an anti-identity, representing the lack of caring or need for the neat, strict boxes society tells us we should have (see: Bisexual and Pansexual Identities by Nikki Hayfield and Pansexual Identification in Online Communities by Ayisigi Hale Gonel).

since i’ve already discussed panphobia in fiction and nonfiction books twice now, it’s important to me that i also discuss some positive/affirming/accurate depictions and discussions of pansexuality in fiction and nonfiction books, so here are 20 books that i feel fit the bill! 💗💛💙
do any of y’all have a favorite depiction of pansexuality, whether it’s in literature or not? 👀

Aisha Tyler Confirms Tara Lewis is Pansexual in Criminal Minds: Evolution
The character, who joined the Behavioral Analysis Unit (BAU) in Criminal Minds season 11, was previously married to Dr. Daryl Wright, and engaged to Doug Fuller in the show, but she is now in a relationship with Rebecca Wilson (Nicole Pacent). When asked about her character’s romance and how she might identify, Tyler said: “I think she’s pan[sexual]. I think that’s really perceptive. “I think that, for Tara, she’s really been married to her work for quite a bit of time, and I think that was satisfying to her. She was someone who really cared about the work and loved the intellectual challenge of doing this really difficult, all-consuming work, and so it’s been a real surprise for her to fall for someone again.” “But, I mean, I love that you said that she’s pan, because I think so much about pansexuality, and I don’t want to speak for pansexual people, [but] it’s just about falling in love with the person, you know what I mean?" Tyler added. “And this is someone who’s really brought her alive, in maybe ways that she didn’t expect to feel, because she’s like, ‘No, relationships aren’t for me, I’m about the work,’ and I love these two characters together.”

after writing about the panphobia in bisexual nonfiction, i decided to take a look at panphobia in other nonfiction and fiction. this post looks at 12 fiction books and 13 nonfiction books. not surprisingly, there’s a lot of conflating pansexual with other sexualities, equating it to things it definitely is not, erasing its history, and claiming it’s biphobic or transphobic. once again, i am begging people to thoughtfully, fairly, and objectively consider pansexuality and consult pansexuals when writing about us and our identity.

quick pansexual facts, history, and stats
Pansexuality is defined by pansexual people most commonly as attraction to all genders and attraction regardless of gender.
These definitions are also used by queer organizations, such as GLAAD, GLSEN, Bi Pride UK, PAVES, BRC, PFLAG, The Trevor Project, LGBT Foundation, The Bisexual Index, and Bisexual Organizing Project.
Pansexual has been defined and described as:
Not about gender (1973)
Open to sex with all kinds of people (1974)
Anything goes (1980s)
Being open to loving anyone (1982)
Attraction to all sexes and genders (1997)
Attraction regardless of sex and gender (1999)
Equal opportunity (2001)
Fluid sexuality (2002)
Attraction to multiple genders (2004)
Attraction to any gender (2006)
Attraction regardless of sex and gender (2009)
Attraction regardless of gender (2011)
Gender doesn’t determine attraction (2012)
The 1960s–1980s saw pansexual indicating androgyny, fluidity, and universal appeal, often in musicians, icons, styles, lyrics, movements, etc., particularly in the glitter/glam rock scene.
The 1980s-1990s, pansexual indicated in kink communities that an event, party, club, group, sex, etc. was open to people of all genders, sexes, and sexualities.
Then and onward, pansexual is a sexuality label, indicating a general openness to all people and experiences, as well as attraction to all sexes and genders.
Pansexuals experience high rates of:
anxiety
depression
suicidal ideation
mental distress
self-harm
unhappiness
eating disorders
food insecurity
(Statistics from 19 surveys, 2012 to 2022)
Pansexuals experience high levels of:
being closeted
feeling unsafe
verbal harassment
physical assault and abuse
sexual harassment, assault, and abuse
bullying
homelessness
poverty
(Statistics from 24 surveys, 2014 to 2022)
Pansexuals experience low levels of:
inclusion
sense of belonging
sense of community
support
access to health services
(Statistics from 8 surveys, 2014 to 2022)
This history and these statistics, and more, can be found here and here. Happy Pan Week! 💗💛💙
