Exit Strategy

Prompt:
“What’s our exit strategy?”
“Our what?”
“Oh my god, we’re all going to die.”
Drabble:
She hurried them into the dark cubby before she went further ahead, scuffing the ground around the corner so it looked like they ran past before crouching with them in the dark. When the shouting got louder, she turned from the entrance to the little alley to hide her face. The others still had their face paint on, but she had dove into the water to save the little girl and most of hers had come off.
The shouting got louder and she heard them run by. When Thomas went to get up she grabbed his arm and shook her head. He had just crouched back down when two more guards ran by them. Thomas and Mel looked at her and she nodded.
Together, they got up and headed out and away from the guards.
“I’m surprised we made it this far,” Mel said.
Though she whispered it, to my ears it sounded very loud. I was used to other assassins or thieves, all of whom were great at whispering so quietly it was more like a breath of wind.
“Luckily, Yona knows how to cover our tracks.”
“Right, what’s our exit strategy,” I asked as we walked.
“Our what,” Mel and Thomas asked in unison as they looked over at me.
I wanted to smack them both. They came into this situation head first and didn’t have an exit strategy? As I started to open my mouth, I heard the guards headed back our way.
I motioned for them to go forward and they looked at me, bewildered.
“Oh my god, we’re all going to die. Get inside the damn room before I toss you to the guards and make my escape,” I threatened.
I managed to get them both in before the guards came back and went past the room again.
“You wouldn’t really leave us, would you,” Mel asked and I smiled at her.
“No promises.”
