Cristina Rosales: A series of misunderstandings made Cristina run away from what they had and Diego feels bad that he has to lie to her when they used to be a happy couple. He means to win her heart again, but can this love overcome the wounds of the past?

Zara Dearborn: He doesn’t agree with her views and that was precisely the point that made their engagement happen. It allows him to look into the Cohort’s inner circle, although he’s ashamed of this relationships and tries to hide it from Cristina and her friends.

Though he had been a Silent Brother for years, James Carstairs never forgot those he loved most. That love led him back to Tessa, his wife, and led him on the search for Kit Herondale, the last of the Herondale line. He has stuck around LA just to see how the new young Shadowhunter is faring in his new reality. And perhaps to keep a close eye on an impulsive girl who shares his surname, just in case.

Connections Tessa Gray: Jem has loved Tessa for one hundred and thirty-seven years. Even through his emotions fading with each passing day as a Silent Brother, in his heart of hearts, he loved her. It has been years, now, since he first saw her again on Blackfriars’ Bridge, and the two got married at the same spot. Both have been torn apart by history, but are working to make each other whole. 

Emma Carstairs: However distantly related, Emma and Jem have the same last name, thus they are connected by blood. He is something of a father figure to the girl, whose own father died when she was just twelve. He hadn’t been around her much due to time constraints, but had been present at her Parabatai ceremony and, ultimately, left her a cat, through whom he sends her gifts through. She is very fond of Jem, as he is of her, however, she has become uneasy around him, as he ws the one who told her of the Parabatai Curse, thus she is afraid she might be discovered. 

Kit Herondale: Due to being the very last of the Herondale bloodline, Jem traveled far and wide in order to find him. Due to James’ parabatai, whom he loved more than almost anything, he has always felt a debt to the Herondale family, and refused to see it go extinct. He is in LA to amke sure the new Shadowhunter is adjusting well. Though, as he knows how Herondales can be, keeps a bit of a distance. He couldn’t just leave him, after all, the Carstairs owe the Herondales.

Plot points

The only person that knows about Emma’s feelings for Julian and what the other girl is doing to prevent the parabatai curse. She’s especially interested in the Fair Folk and hopes to end the Cold Peace.

Emma Carstairs: Cristina’s best friend. When she first came to the LA Institute, Emma was one of the few people around since the Blackthorn family had been away and the two girls quickly became friends. She often works as the voice of reason beside Emma’s impulsiveness.

Mark Blackthorn: Cristina had heard about Mark right after the Dark War, sympathizing with the story of the half-faerie boy who had been forgotten by the Clave. She was patient with him when he came back to his family and couldn’t avoid the way his compliments made her blush.

Diego Rosales: The ex-boyfriend that came back. She didn’t expect to meet him again in Los Angeles, as she’d left her home mostly because she felt betrayed by Diego and his brother. His presence stirs up old feelings that she doesn’t know how to deal with.

Plot Points:

Tessa is very invested in the Herondale bloodline, which happened to be her descendants. So, she, along with her husband, Jem, are keeping a close eye on the Los Angeles Institute. They had searched for years for the last descendant, knowing that Jace Herondale wasn’t the sole heir to the name. She really wants to get to know Kit more and help him adjust.

Connections Jem Carstairs: Tessa has loved two people all her life, starting at the age of sixteen. One was a Herondale, whom she married and had kids with, and the other was Jem. After finding out that the Heavenly Fire from Jace Herondale had turned Jem mortal again, the two had resumed their romance and, a year later, had gotten married.

Kit Herondale: Though Tessa is basically Kit’s great-great-great-grandmother, he isn’t aware of this. But it causes her to take a special interest in him. She’s very sweet to him in a motherly sort of way and can see that every inch of him is Herondale, even if he wouldn’t admit it.

Plot Points:

To make up for the harm he’d foolishly caused to the Blackthorn family, Kieran fought by their side and killed Iarlath, another Hunter that had aligned himself with Malcolm Fade. For this crime, Gywn ap Nudd exiled the prince, who is currently residing in the LA Institute.

Connections

Mark Blackthorn: The two boys were both outcasts in the Wild Hunt and found comfort in each other, their friendship blossoming into something more. Being young and passionate, Kieran became jealous when he saw how well Mark was fitting in with the Shadowhunters – and especially with one named Cristina Rosales – and made a hasty decision that caused them to break apart. The elf-bolt necklace he’d given Mark during their time with the Wild Hunt was returned to him.

Emma Carstairs: His foolish attempt to make Gwyn ap Nudd call Mark back to the Wild Hunt resulted in Emma being tortured. He had nothing against the girl specifically but knows that she doesn’t think nicely of him for this.

Cristina Rosales: When he first saw Cristina and how close she’d gotten to Mark, Kieran was angry. Now he has a chance to get to know her better and see why his lover was so charmed by her patience and kindness.

Plot Points:

Kit just found out that he is a Shadowhunter. More specifically, a Herondale. He is struggling between hating these people, liking these people, and wanting to run away from the Institute, taking anything of value with him.

Ty Blackthorn: Kit isn’t sure how he feels about Ty. He knows for sure that the other boy sees the world differently and it is very refreshing to him. Kit, though he sees the beauty in everything, tends to find the most beauty, both inwardly and outwardly, in Tiberius Blackthorn.

Tessa Gray (Herondale-Carstairs) & Jem Carstairs: Kit slightly resents both Tessa and Jem. Though he is a Shadowhunter and has always been a Shadowhunter, he blames them for bringing him into their World. He won’t admit to himself that he’s starting to enjoy himself a bit.

Even Helen’s exile wasn’t enough to break their love apart and she followed Helen to the coldness of Wrangle Island. Aline knows how much her wife suffers with the exile, away from her family, and because of that she has decided to try and secure a position in Los Angeles.

Jia Penhallow: Aline’s mother and current Consul of the Clave. Jia supported her even though same-sex relationships were frowned upon and she still tries to help the two young women, but couldn’t prevent Helen’s exile. Aline misses her mother greatly and they are always looking for a way to let Aline return home with her wife.

Connections Tiberius Blackthorn: Livvy’s twin. She wished they could be parabatai, but Ty had plans to attend Scholmance. They share a kind of private communication that only twins would understand. They are both protective of each other, though Livvy more so due to the fact that Tiberius tends to see the world differently.

Kit Herondale: Livvy is curious about him. She doesn’t know any other kid her age aside from her twin and he’s always lived between the mundane and the shadow world. She likes Kit enough to let him get close to them, turning the duo into a trio.

Connections Livia Blackthorn: Ty’s twin. These two are incredibly close, though they aren’t parabatai due to the fact that Ty previously wanted to go into the Scholmance. They are both protective of each other, though Livvy more so due to the fact that Tiberius tends to see the world differently.

Kit Herondale: The Watson to Ty’s Sherlock. These two got off to a rather... rocky start, but Kit soon made the Ty and Livvy duo into a trio. Kit is one of the only ones besides his family to accept Ty’s differences completely.

Plot Points:

Julian is still very much in love with Emma, who, due to finding out about the parabatai curse, began to date Mark. Julian is unaware of the curse surrounding them, straining both relationships. 

In dealing with this, he also has to deal with the death of his uncle, Arthur. There is a mixture of guilt, mourning and relief, as this is one secret he will no longer have to hide and deal with.

Connections Blackthorn Family: Julian has basically been the sole parent and guardian of the Blackthorns since he was just twelve years old. He is more father than brother to them. He would 10 times out of 10 choose them over anyone else and would do absolutely anything for them, even if it compromised his morals.

Emma Carstairs: His parabatai. His best friend. The girl he is in love with. The relationship between the two has changed drastically since one night on the beach. However, they have had to keep their relationship secret due to their parabatai bond and it being forbidden. Still, there is little he wouldn’t do for her, and would always be there if she needed him.

Name: Emma Carstairs Age: 17 Pronouns: She/her Sexuality: Bisexual FC: Claire Holt Quote: “You belong where you’re loved.” Biography:

Emma Carstairs had always been a Shadowhunter. From the time she could walk, she was running; from the time she could hold things, she was wielding  sticks as swords; from the moment she had met Julian Blackthorn, she knew he would be her Parabatai.

They had first met when her father was visiting his, who happened to be the Head of the Los Angeles Institute. She had tagged along, all long, lanky limbs and blonde pigtails coupled with a mischievous grin that she never totally lost. And he had just been Julian, like he always was, just smaller. He treated her like as an equal, even at seven years old, and the two became fast friends, as Emma did with all the Blackthorns. Their simple playdates of running around the Institute or along the beach soon came to an end as, with age, they began to train. But, just a few months after she had tried on her very first set of Shadowhunter gear and been given her shortsword, Cortana, disaster struck. Julian’s mother, Eleanor, had died. Emma went to the funeral and had stood with Julian. Even then, the two were an unbreakable pair.

So, they both threw themselves into training along with Julian’s older half-siblings, Mark and Helen, and two of his younger siblings - twins - Livia and Tiberius. Emma excelled rapidly, perfecting her falling and rolling in such a way that it was worth it - in her eyes - to break so many bones. She was quick and light on her feet. With Cortana flashing in her hand, Emma always thought she was invincible.

But, oh, how she was wrong.

Emma had her world shattered on the same day Julian’s family was ripped apart. Sebastian Morgenstern had come to the Los Angeles Institute. His white blonde hair and black eyes was a picture that would forever stay in her mind, as would Andrew Blackthorn being forced to his knees and drinking from the Mortal Cup. But, a portal was opened and the seven Blackthorn children, and Emma, were sent to Alicante, the Capital City for all Nephilim. There, Emma received the news that her parents had died, and their bodies had washed up on the shores of Los Angeles.

It was as if everything in her body was made of glass, because every piece of her felt broken. Nothing was right. Andrew had been turned into an Endarkened, leaving the Institute with no Head and the Blackthorns with no father, and Emma’s parents were dead, and no one would tell her anything. She couldn’t even remember the last words they had said to her, or what she had said to them. Guilt had wracked her body, as she had been so excited to train and see the Blackthorns, when she would be able to see them for years and years, but she would never see the faces of her parents alive ever again.

However, as per the Clave, Sed lex dura lex, all of the children were questioned under the weight of the Mortal Sword, which was a deep, agonizing pain that they could hardly bear. Emma’s heart had nearly burst with sadness when Julian had to hold the Sword on his own, she she had run up and held it with him, sharing the burden between the two of them, and hoping that Drusilla, at just eight years old, wouldn’t have to face that sort of pain on top of the things she already had to face.

Emma had run out, furious, her temper running away with her. John Carstairs had always told her that was something she needed to control, but John Carstairs wasn’t alive anymore. So Emma did what any impulsive, reckless, orphaned twelve-year-old would do. She stole her parents’ file from the Inquisitor. After all, if no one was going to tell her anything, she would have to make sense of things herself. The file revealed that her parents had died under ‘strange circumstances’, though the Clave, worrying about another War on the rise and not wanting to investigate a seemingly meaningless pair of deaths, had written it off as being part of Sebastian Morgenstern’s raid.

Her time in Alicante continued to be an unpleasant one. Mark and Helen were both exiled for being half-faerie, as the faeries had been working with Sebastian Morgenstern; she watched as Julian had to kill the monster that had been his father and talked like his father, but was no longer Andrew Blackthorn; the Clave nearly tried to separate her from the Blackthorns, something she wasn’t willing to do. They thought Emma showed promise, and wanted to send her off to the Academy.

So, Julian and Emma made the decision to become Parabatai. There was no one else Emma would have chosen at that time, no one else she loved more and trusted more. That had kept them together, but it would soon come back to haunt them both.

Emma spent the next five years of her life trying to track her parents’ killer and training so that, once she found them, she was able to kill them. She had nightmares about the water where they had found their bodies, but that weakness only caused Emma to train harder, never give up, and never give into it. Vengeance and vengeance alone was on her mind.

However, things came together in an odd way. The Blackthorns had Mark returned to them, who ended up being an integral part of Emma’s investigation. She met Cristina Rosales, a girl traveling from Mexico, who, like Julian, became Emma’s confidant and best friend. And she fell in love with her parabatai, which was completely forbidden by the Law.

Julian had snuck up on her. She was supposed to love him like a brother, the way she loved Ty and Tavvy, the way Alec Lightwood and Jace Herondale loved each other. Not this way. Not the sparks-flying-stolen-looks-forbidden-kisses-meant-to-be kind of love. The way she loved Julian, it was everything. He knew her better than anyone did, as did she about him. They were a perfect pair, as parabatai were meant to be, yet they were more than that. They were each other’s mirrors. His steady head and stability complimented her fire and impulsivity, his secrets complimented her brutal honesty. They were paired in more ways than one.

Soon, however, Emma found out the true murderer of her parents. The warlock who had been with the Blackthorns and Carstairs for years, the High Warlock of Los Angeles, who they thought was their friend. Malcolm Fade. She wanted nothing more to make him hurt, to make him suffer for everything he did, but, at the same time, she had to protect the Blackthorns, as they were the ones now in danger from him. But then many things happened at once.

Arthur’s death. Malcolm’s disappearance. An empty coffin. A curse revealed.

Connections Julian Blackthorn: Her parabatai and best friend.She also happens to be in love with him. However, after being told about the parabatai curse ad what it entails, she has had to keep her distance from him in an attemp to lessen their affections for each other. Needless to say, that didn’t work too well. 

Mark Blackthorn: They’re dating. It’s messy. She’s only dating him to make Julian not love her anymore. However, she really does love Mark, but in a brotherly way. 

Cristina Rosales: Emma’s best friend. Julian not included, Cristina is the one that Emma can tall everything to. So, she knows the situation with Julian and with Mark, but she can keep a secret. 

Clary Fray & Jace Herondale: Clary and Jace were both there for Emma during one of the most difficult times in her life: when her parents died. She sees Clary as an older sister and confidant, someone wiser and trustworthy (but busy so they most communicate through phonecalls). Jace, however, is her idol. She wants to be Jace Herondale, but she never thinks she’ll be at that level.

Name: Mark Blackthorn Age: 21 (lived in the Faerie realm between 16 and 21) Pronouns: He/him Sexuality: Bisexual Quote: “Every human heart was chained by love” Biography:

Once upon a time, a Shadowhunter fell madly in love with a Seelie. But unlike mundane fairy tales, it was not bound to end well. Andrew Blackthorn and Lady Nerissa of the Seelie Court spent seven years together in Faerieland, although merely a day had passed in the mortal world, and from their union two beautiful half-faerie children were born, with light blond hair and pointed ears. It was only after Andrew found out that his brother had been enslaved and tortured by another Seelie that the two Blackthorns managed to escape, and Lady Nerissa was left behind with her children.

She tried to raise them on her own but they were constant memories of her lost love and she eventually sent them to their Nephilim family, her will to live wilting. The children, Helen and Mark Blackthorn, grew up under the care of Andrew and his second wife, Eleanor, who treated them as her own. In spite of the mixed blood, they could bear the marks of the Angel and were trained as Shadowhunters like the rest of the family. Mark always had a good relationship with his half-siblings, especially with Ty for his particular way of interacting with people. Along with Helen, as the oldest siblings, they helped care for their big family and never once felt like they didn’t belong in the Institute.

That is, until the Dark War turned their lives upside-down. With the fey supporting Sebastian Morgenstern, Mark was captured at the attack to the LA Institute, while fighting against the Endarkened. A 17-year-old boy taken to the Faerie realm against his will, Mark was tortured and whipped, told that his family was dead and that there was nothing else for him with the Shadowhunters. He finally caved and accepted the food and drink of the Fair Folk, an action that would officially bind him to them. He knew that the Clave wouldn’t look for a half-breed like him.

He was soon taken by the Wild Hunt to ride with them over dark places of blood and massacre, through pain and hunger and exhaustion. He has the characteristic heterochromatic eyes of the Wild Hunt, one greenish-blue of the Blackthorns and the other turned golden. His time as a Hunter seemed to go on for longer than his family felt in the mortal world, barely seven years for them feeling like an eternity for Mark. There he found comfort and love in the form of an Unseelie Prince, who became close to him in spite of his mixed blood. But even in the darkest of times, every night he said the names of his siblings to the stars, trying to keep the memories of them alive.

He was thrust back into his family’s life in a time of woe and betrayal, reeled into a life he wasn’t sure he could live anymore. He became used to the way of fey, their courteous speech and tendency to manipulate the truth since they can’t lie. His appearance hasn’t aged more than a year and now he looks almost as young as his brother Julian, far less capable of caring for his family the way he did before. Yet he’s made the decision to leave the Wild Hunt behind and stay with them, especially now that their uncle’s death will bring unforeseen consequences.

Kieran Kingson: The two boys were both outcasts in the Wild Hunt and found comfort in each other, their friendship blossoming into something more. At first Mark didn’t believe that an Unseelie prince could ever love a boy with Shadowhunter blood like him, but they gave themselves over to their love until Mark was used as a bargaining chip with the Blackthorns. The pain caused by Kieran’s jealousy was enough for Mark to end their relationship and return the elf-bolt necklace that had been given to him as present. However, Kieran came back to help his family and with the prince’s exile Mark has yet to figure out what he feels for the other boy.

Cristina Rosales: She was the first person Mark could properly talk to in the Institute, as she didn’t know him before his time with the Wild Hunt and wouldn’t have any expectations of his behavior. He’s charmed by her beauty and kindness, but she encouraged him to try and figure out what his heart truly wants. It doesn’t stop him from admiring her, even though he’s supposedly dating Emma.

Emma Carstairs: Mark remembered her as a little girl and was happy to see that she’d grown up to be a remarkable young woman. Although he doesn’t like lying after his time with the Fair Folk, he accepted to pretend to be her boyfriend without making too many questions.

Blackthorn family: Every night, Mark would look at the stars and name them after his siblings. He suffered a lot away from them, after being deceived into thinking that they were dead. Coming back was a difficult process, as he had to learn how to conciliate the wild parts of his nature with the Shadowhunters habits once more. However, he decided never to leave them again and now he only wishes that his full-blood sister, his beautiful Helen, will return.
