Baatar’s voice had faded into the background as Korra stood there. The avatar closed her eyes pushing the nightmare behind her before opening them once more. No one was hurt, she was fine, Baatar and Kuvira were both ok. Looking up now she realized Baatar had gotten closer to her. Could he see the beads of sweat on her brow or the panic in her eyes just a moment ago? She stood there for a few moments before realizing he had asked her a question.
“Huh?” she began. “..Sorry.. I just...”
Did the room feel smaller suddenly? The once spacious kitchen now felt dwarfed in size. Yet at the same time the walk to the stairs felt like it was miles away. And the air had it always felt this thin? Her lungs felt like they were doing overtime yet she could barely feel anything coming into her lungs.

Baatar sighed as he made his way back into his home. Whom he shared with Kuvira and Korra. He didn’t know how he had found himself in a relationship with the former Great United and the avatar both. It was somewhere along the way Kuvira had suggested inviting Korra into their relationship. He hadn’t been sure why he had agreed to it but he had and now all three were together. Though at times it sure didn’t feel like they were all together. Many times Kuvira and Korra would be off in their own and he had felt more like a third wheel or a live in handman/maid.
Recently he had felt the like the odd ball out of the relationship. The two woman seemed more then content on being without him. Even when he tried to voice his lack of being included, he was either blown off by the Avatar or his words flew over Kuvira’s head. She told him often that he was just as important as Korra and he shouldn’t feel the way he did when they were all equal. Baatar looked around the living room when he stepped into the house. He immediately noticed that the dishes he had asked to be washed were still in the sink.

Korra had been in the middle of trying to calm her mind when the voice cut through the seemingly empty space. The sudden entry startled the avatar causing her eyes to glow for a moment before returning to their normal hue. She needed to relax, it was just Baatar. There was no reason to be alarmed she lived with him after all. Her anxiety from the nightmare must have spooked Raava as well. She wasn’t in any danger then why didn’t she feel any better? She took in a deep breath to compose herself before turning towards the entry to the kitchen.
“...S-sorry, did I wake you?” The avatar began her voice faltering.
She tried to fake a smile to hide her anxiety as she dodged his question. Her voice sounded small and far away even as it left her mouth. Korra was thankful for the mask the darkness of the kitchen had created. Looking over at him she could see his silhouette along with a few key features but the rest was concealed. Silently Korra hoped that the dark had given her the same aid.
She tried to keep her breathing even but her heart wouldn’t slow down. What if something happened? What if she couldn’t protect them? What if? At some point Korra wasn’t staring at Baatar anymore. She was looking past him, through him, gradually imagining the horrors of her nightmare.

Even though they were further away, Baatar could still hear them. Of course Kuvira could bend in the pool. It would just cost them a couple hundred dollars for the repairs. Laying on his stomach on the giant floatie turtle duck, Baatar used his arms and legs to propel him around the pool. He had to admit that it was nice to be lazy in the evenings. Something that seemed like a rarity nowadays
The trio finished up their time in the pool before retiring for the evening. Kuvira and Korra both retired to separate rooms for the night. After laying down Korra had drifted off in a matter of seconds having been exhausted from the long trip and the fun upon arrival. Her sweet slumber quickly turned sour as a nightmare began to rage on in her dreams.
Korra shot up in bed shaking as her chest heaved. It was just a dream... Just a dream.. Zaheer was in jail... The red lotus was gone.. Raava was here with her.. Vaatu was gone. Then why did it feel so real? The avatar looked down to notice the vice grip she had on her bed sheets. She could feel the strain in her hands from holding them so close. She just needed to get a drink of water. Korra released her hold on them and got out of bed. As her feet made contact with the ground they crumpled sending her straight onto the floor. There was nothing wrong with her legs, the poison was gone. Then why was he body acting like this? Panicking Korra pushed herself up using the edge of the bed.The avatar made her way down the steps and into the kitchen. She didn’t bother to turn on the lights as she got herself a glass of water to drink.

“You’re just mad because you can’t earthbend in the pool,” Korra jeered.
Kuvira made a face before looking over at her male lover. She couldn’t help but smile when she saw him on top of the turtleduck float. He was so far away from them though. The vacation was so they could reconnect but that was harder than she had imagined. Especially when he didn’t seem to want to be close to her.

“That’s definitely cheating,” Kuvira remarked.
She had stopped splashing at Korra waiting until the wall. Korra shrugged her shoulders while smiling smugly. Now that the two had ceasefire they noticed Baatar had finally entered the pool.
“Being able to waterbend isn’t cheating,” Korra replied disagreeing.

Korra bent a wall a water up to protect herself from Kuvira’s splashing. The two were so immersed in their own water game that they hadn’t noticed Baatar had decided to join them.

She was on her way to the steps by the pool when she noticed that he was sitting down. He also had a towel wrapped around him... That was odd.. Was he embarrassed? She didn’t see the need for it. It was just the three of them. Then again Baatar was always shy about this type of thing. He must have been worried about Korra seeing him? Or was she part of the problem as well? She wasn’t in the position to probe so she let it be. Gradually she began to ease her way into the water.
Korra had popped up for air when she noticed Kuvira getting closer. She bent a small tendril of water around her waist before pulling her in. Kuvira let out a small cry before splashing water back at the avatar,

“I’m sure,” Kuvira replied. “Besides I can use the time to find souvenirs for people when we get back home.”
She didn’t mind, she was honestly happy that Baatar was going to let her come with him. This vacation was about spending time together, it didn’t completely matter if she wasn’t a big fan of sweets. It would give her the time to learn more about her distant partner.

Sweets? She couldn’t understand everyone’s obsession with them. Beyond her childhood she rarely desired to consume any of it. But she knew Baatar had an interest and Korra would as well.

His hands felt softer than her’s running along her back. The bender’s hands were always tough with callouses no matter what she did to them. Earthbending required her to be a rough as the element. Even using gloves momentarily hadn’t helped remove the problem. Baatar’s hand were smoother than her own. It almost felt unfair. He worked with his hands just as much as she did, if not more.
It felt like centuries had passed before he announced that he had finished. She thanked him before turning back around to tie the top of her swimsuit. After his hands left her back she wished she could remind time. She missed him, not the sex with him. She wasn’t with him for that reason. It had even been a long time before the two had even slept together at first. She missed him in every way. His smile, his laugh, the way his eyes looked when he was working. Spirits what was wrong with her? She felt like a child in Zaofu again. She had the same heaviness when Baatar had to get whisked away by his father for another project. Back then she thought it was just loneliness eating away at her. Loneliness felt better than being a so close but so far away.
“Did you still want to stop by city hall during our trip?” Kuvira asked.
She didn’t know what to say... It was the first thing that came to mind that he might actually reply to. She just didn’t want to leave him right now. She had dealt with warlords, monarchs, and even Suyin Beifong but it was Baatar that left her fumbling over words.

I agree with you completely. I’m super nerdy about history because I have a degree in Asian Studies, people tend to forget that Asian history is very gay. Monasteries like the one Aang lived at pretty gay long ago. Just like in Roman culture many warriors had homosexual relationships with each other. Women of higher status had their ladies in waiting etc and had relationships with them as well. Like you said a big shift to homophobia came from outside sources such as the west. But since the west or European countries don’t exist those shifts may not have happened at all.
A good link of homophobia happening in Asia is due to the desire for the family name to continue on. But this also means that another shift has to happen to view adoption as bad or equaling ‘not really your kid.’ Which for a while that’s how couples operated in Japan. If a guy felt pressured to have a kid he would find a woman with a kid and just marry her and bam instant heir to the family.
With the whole 100 year war if homophobia exist in Sozins time it may have drifted away because society was collapsing due to the war. New social norms had to be put in place. Men went off to war and some died breaking apart what was considered the norm of the family unit. Which would lead the way for, at the time, unconventional family units. Same sex couples, being raised by only grandparents, aunt/uncle or siblings. War is a big driving force in reshaping society.
I have rambled too, I’m sorry. Years of studying ancient society are coming to the front of my memory. But yeah I really wish the writers looked beyond their own cishet minds and go a little deeper. Because I don’t really see how adding homophobia really helps anything in the plot.
wait wait wait so there's gay marriage in the earth kingdom in aang's time.... yet kya tells korra and asami that they may face homophobic prejudice because the fire nation and earth kingdom were historically homophobic...
i know the existance of gay marriage doesn't necessarily mean that homophobia doesn't exist, but it's kinda weird that they had it 70 years ago in a nation that's "the most militaristically repressive" and apparently still hasn't normalized being gay?
i'm not mad about it though! i actually really hope they continue with this and just.... ignore homophobia altogether in future korra comics, because if i have to watch korra and asami be the victims of a hate crime to educate the kids i'm gonna combust 😩

“Oh, I already put on my sunscreen.” Baatar said it had been difficult to get his entire back but he had done it to the best of his ability. “Plus I think the instructions said to let the sunscreen set for at least thirty minutes.” He said looking in the direction of the avatar.
“I’m pretty sure she’s going to get burned.” Since Korra had just jumped right into the pool after getting her sunscreen applied.
“Do you need help getting sunscreen on your back?”
“At least she put some on this time,” Kuvira remarked with a sigh.
Years of living in the frozen tundra.. And her own attitude... Made Korra believe that she was immune to such a condition. Eventually she would learn her lesson. Tanned skin or not everyone could get damage from the sun.
“Could you?” Kuvira asked.
She reached behind her and untied the halter string to her swimsuit before turning her back to Baatar. She placed her hands over the top of her chest to avoid exposing herself. She didn’t know why but the simple act made her cheeks heat up. What was wrong with her? They had grown up together... They had seen each other naked before... They had slept together before... Why was her brain acting so childish?

Personal opinion but it felt very odd for there to be homophobia in the avatar world. In terms of gender equality Avatar world is way ahead of it’s time in many ways. Given all of the spiritual themes of the series it feels odd that they would have to deal with something like that. It feels generic to me that they added that in.

“I thought it might be fun,” Korra shrugged. “Besides I didn’t know if you guys just wanted to lounge or swim around.”
“You need to put on sunscreen before you get in,” Kuvira reminded Korra scolding her slightly.
The avatar frowned pouting for a moment before abandoning her collection of floaties. She walked over and turned with her back to Kuvira letting the other apply her sunscreen. The second she was done the avatar took off and jumped into the water creating a large splash. Kuvira rolled her eyes with a sigh before turning towards Baatar.
“Do you want me to do your back?” The metalbender offered.

Korra wasted no time in blowing up some of the pool floaties with her air bending. Kuvira was off to the side applying sunscreen. The two were already dressed in their swim wear. Korra had on a light blue two piece swimsuit with a tanktop style top and bikini bottoms. Kuvira had one a solid green one piece swimsuit that matched her eyes.
Kuvira smiled when she saw him, her green eyes lighting up as they met his. She couldn’t think of the last time she had seen him in a swimsuit... Or maybe she never had? Either way it wasn’t a bad sight. She made sure not to let her eyes linger on him. They hadn’t spent much time together in so long she didn’t want him to think she was getting perverse ideas. She hadn’t been staring at his body so much as just noticing how he walked. The way his shoulders moved with each step. Others may disagree with her, but there was something so captivating about Baatar, he really drew her in.
“Perfect timing we’re just about done setting up,” Kuvira said.
