Physcia erumpens
This foliose(ish) lichen has overlapping lobes forming orbicular or irregular patches around 3 cm in diameter tightly attached to the surface of the substrate. The upper surface is a whitish or pale greenish gray, and has granular soredia (clonal propagules containing fungal and photobiont constituents) erupting out of laminal (all across the thallus surface) crateriform (crater-like) or capitate (cap-like) soralia (an area on the thallus surface that produces soredia). *Phew* got all that? The lower surface is black and covered in simple black rhizines (small root-like structures that anchor the lichen to the substrate). Its apothecia (fruiting bodies) are usually poorly developed, and have a sorediate (covered in soredia) margin and a dark brown-black disc. P. erumpens grows on rock and bark in Africa, Macaronesia, New Zealand, South America, and southern North America.
