i’ve been going through the different povs for everyone’s first ep of the crossover, and i love that there’s varying degrees of people getting excited over the builds, the different empires, meeting up with friends. and then theres doc who immediately becomes lost and continues most of the rest of his hour long episode in a constant state of dazed and baffled fear and confusion

Scar liked cats.

To the rest of the server, this was common knowledge. The hermits knew of his bond with Jellie and how she would appear in every world the hermits entered, no matter the circumstances. They knew of his obsession with cats in some of the earlier seasons. They knew that if they let him, he would become the crazy cat lady who spent all of his diamonds on cat food and little laser toys. It was a shame that cats caused so much lag.

But with the start of the ninth season, something changed. No matter how high or low Scar looked in each village he came across, he could not find Jellie. It wasn’t exactly uncommon that he didn’t find her until later on in the season, but it did make him a bit sad. He’d created a playroom and everything for her! That particular room of his magical elven (because he was an elf, no matter what the other hermits said about his luscious locks and silky robe) tree looked quite empty without her in it. 

But it was okay! He would find her eventually; he had in every other season, after all! It’s just that—well, he got a little lonely without her sometimes. That’s all.

He missed her. Scar missed her a lot. Falling through the void between worlds had taken far longer than he thought possible, and this season was already well underway, so it had been at least a few months since he last saw Jellie. He had started to feel her absence. Even the annoying parts like when some of her hair got up his nose and then he ended up with a runny nose.

Suffice to say, when Scar wheeled out of his tree, his flamboyant (he’s pretty sure that’s how that word was used) hair flowing in the breeze, he had not prepared to see an unfamiliar cat on his doorstep.

…Do you ever see people critiquing specific word usage in novels and wonder if they know that language can be used in fun and figurative ways? And that this is half the joy of writing?

An example off the top of my head - if I say ‘He gave a whisper of a smile’, it does not mean that the smile is literally whispering; it means that the word ‘whisper’ invokes a sense of smallness, due perhaps to subtlety or shyness, and that is something I want connected to your mental envisioning of this dude’s smile. 

Saying ‘But that makes no sense; a smile and a whisper are two different things’ misses the point e n t i r e l y
