Renewed Weekly Summary 15/01/2021

Happy new year!

It’s been about a month since I last published a summary, so there’s a fair bit here - I’m currently in Greece with family and will be for the rest of the month until I finally head home to Ireland in February. Apart from the fiction that I’m about to go into, I also made a generator for Little Men - it’s just a silly little Excel random generator that picks out for you a man’s profession, something he’s passionate about, and a problem he has! The delightful end of 2021!

Good evening!

What a fucking year it’s been.

I’ve been unbelievably happy with some of the work I’ve been doing this year, and I’ve been so so happy along the way to get to work on such a variety of projects since I went full-time as an author in February, which I’ve been able to do purely because of the support of readers - whether that means buying my books, supporting me on Patreon or Medium, or just sending me a Ko-Fi when you can, thank you! You let me make my living doing what I love and what, it seems, you love too, and I’m unbelievably grateful and feel tremendously privileged to be able to do so!

In the new year you can look forward to some short story collections of some of my favourite stories from 2021, which I’m hoping to make a regular annual release; I’ve got a great many projects to work on, and as well as continuing to work on my shorts and my essays and my serials, I’m also gonna be trying to do a bit more script work, which I’m looking forward to!

I’ve got my ordinary little summary of new works published, and then I’m going to put together a top 10 list of some of my favourite shorts from this year in case you missed them!

This is going to be the last email I send out this year - I’ll undoubtedly still be putting out some works over the next few weeks here and there, but I’m going to be taking it easy and try to take a bit of time off.

Weekly Update 11/12/2021

Good evening!

For the last week, I have been ill, and therefore I have not worked, unfortunately. It wasn’t anything super serious, just a nasty cold that my dad picked up - not coronavirus! - and infected me and my mother with also, so the whole family has just been miserably slumping about the house for the past week, blowing our noses, coughing, nursing headaches, and generally wishing for the sweet embrace of death.

With that said, while I told myself I would not work, that doesn’t mean I didn’t write, and in between playing the Yakuza series on the Xbox, which is incredible and I recommend resolutely (I’ve just started Yakuza Kiwami 2, and there’s like a dozen others), I have been writing Yakuza fanfiction. For 99% of you, I’m sure that’s of no real interest, but for the small fraction who either love Yakuza or like reading fanfiction blind, here you go!

I’m still a little unwell, but I’m mostly down to just sniffles and being under the weather now, so this week we’ll be back to our regular routine with fanfic being bits on the side rather than the whole menu! Thanks so much for your patience, everybody. <3

Weekly Summary 05/12/2021

Good morning, everybody!

Thanks so much for your patience on the weekly update, as I didn’t put one out last week - I’ve been thinking that I’m going to reduce my general goal of new pieces down from 4-5 pieces a week to 2-3. This probably won’t change much, as I’ve practically been reaching that goal of recent rather than the former anyway - because I’m focusing so much on longer form pieces which are 10k, 15k, 20k, as opposed to the short form ones that only really go up to 8k, the goal of 5+ distinct pieces just doesn’t work, as working in long form I go from expecting to be writing 25-40k a week to something more like 60k+, and it’s just not feasible for me.

For the months of December and January, I’m expecting to be publishing a little bit less - I’m trying to force myself to focus on some genuine R&R, not to mention spend a little more time with friends and family while it’s the holiday season and I’m spending time away from Ireland to be with everyone in Wales and then in Greece.

I just want to thank everyone for their support this year - it’s meant so much to me to be able to work like I do, especially given the issues I’ve been having with my mental and physical health, and the constant support has just been phenomenally meaningful to me, especially as I’m able to do what I love, full time!

It was early in the morning, early enough that it was still dark outside except for the flash and stutter of the city’s lights, but Majima, naturally, was already awake. Kazuma had no idea how much he normally slept, but when Kazuma was in Majima’s bed he tended to sleep at least three or four hours, but never more than that.

Did he sleep more, when Kazuma wasn’t here? Did he sleep less? Did he sleep differently with other partners, with kobun or with hosts and hostesses, or with other lieutenants, than he did with Kazuma?

It wasn’t the sort of thought Kazuma normally had about anybody, wasn’t the sort of thing he thought about, but since the first time Majima had grabbed him and shoved his tongue down Kazuma’s throat with no warning at all before dragging him home, it was the sort of thing Kazuma thought about.

Weekly Update 20/11/2021

Good evening!

No weekly update last week because I was at the Destination: Star Trek convention, which was incredible! It was such a lot of fun, and really gave me some material for some further DS9 essays over the next few weeks, alongside some other planned non-fiction stuff, especially work around trauma and trauma recovery in DS9. On that note, I’d also really recommend Andrew Robinson’s memoir, Stepping Into The Light. It turned my brains inside out a bit, but it’s extremely good.

Disclaimer: this is not an official rec list of The Best Movies with MLM That You Absolutely Must See! There’s a pretty wide variety to content and tone.

Not all the movies I’m going to recommend are explicitly queer — some of them center heavy implications or are easily read as homoerotic and/or homoromantic, but part of the reason I want to recommend them anyway is because for me, it doesn’t make them less satisfying or exciting to engage with, especially when we’re on the hunt for something to scratch that itch.

With that said, I’m going to put a note before each recommendation noting how implicit/explicit the queerness is, and I’m also going to make an explicit note if a character or relationship is only a side plot or smaller thread, so that you go in knowing what to expect!

I’m not going to be recommending Moonlight (2016) (it’s not under-recommended, it’s just new and lauded for good reason) or God’s Own Country (2017), Maurice (1987), Call Me By Your Name (2017), Love, Simon (2018), Brokeback Mountain (2005), Midnight Cowboy (1969), Handsome Devil (2016), The Birdcage (1996) or La cage aux Folles (1978), The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975), Kill Your Darlings (2013), Rent (2005) or A Single Man (2009).

Most of those movies are genuinely quite good, they’re just the first movies that people jump to name when people ask for queer movies with MLM.

This list is not in order of preference, quality, or complexity! The recommendations are just numbered so that you have an easier time coming back to this list for reference as needed!

Early update for Interpersonal Studies!

This update is 14k - I’m going to be at the Destination: Star Trek convention in London this weekend, and I wanted to get this update out early so that I’m not worrying over it on Friday. Next update will be the Friday after next, back to the Friday updates!

“Good morning,” said Garak crisply. Julian heard the sound of him taking off his shoes, and he was surprised when he turned to look that Garak was still in his robe and pyjamas. “We’ll discuss your conversations yesterday over breakfast, Doctor,” no affectionate addition, modifier for student status but not for youth, so that it felt strangely cold. “You’re not on shift until late this afternoon?”

“No, I’m on the late evening shift,” said Julian softly. “I’ve got research to work on, I’m hoping it’ll be a quiet night.”

“It’s good to enter the day with an intention in mind.”

“Are you feeling better?”

“Much. We’ll eat in the Replimat,” said Garak, and gave Julian a severe look, a smile curling his lips. “I want you to go to the replication unit downstairs and replicate an implement for your punishment. Choose your own specifications for it – but, Doctor, I do expect it to be an implement appropriate for the discipline you’ve earned. If I find you have replicated an item with the intention of making things easy on yourself, I will not be pleased, and that will be reflected in the punishment I give you. Do I make myself clear?”

Every word was cool, calculated, and deliberate, and when Julian shivered, heat rising in his neck and up to his cheeks, Garak smiled a little wider, showing his teeth, his head tilting to one side.

“As crystal,” said Julian breathlessly.

King’s Service

Dark Fantasy short. Cecil Hobbes, a man disgraced, has a new stalker. At his age, it’s almost a compliment.

Rated E, 11k, cis M/M. Valorous King, recently discharged from his time serving as a king’s man at the pleasure of Myrddin Wyllt, has returned home to Lashton, and also to his relentless pursuit of his old PE teacher, Cecil Hobbes.

Valorous King had been fifteen, the first time he’d made a play at Cecil Hobbes. He’d met Myrddin by that point and he’d begun receiving his tutelage, but he hadn’t yet joined the king’s service, not officially. Oh, he was special, certainly, and people knew he was special, too, knew he was dangerous, knew he regularly went on little trips off to Camelot, and they knew that it wasn’t wise to piss him off, or try to have a go, though people still tried.

They should have known better. What with the scars that criss-crossed all the way up one of his arms and kissed his neck and chest and the back of one shoulder, like he was wearing his gauntlet and pauldron even when he wasn’t wearing his knight’s armour, it wasn’t like there wasn’t a visual cue to back off.

They should have known it wasn’t a good idea because he was a King, but that was the trouble, really – people forgot, and thought that Valorous was dangerous in the way that his cousins were, until they remembered that he posed a very different kind of danger, one that went beyond bloody noses and wounded pride.

It all seemed a very long time ago, now, but he remembered how it used to feel, walking those halls and feeling like it was all worth nothing, sapping away what little time he had in his life to enjoy anything, when he wasn’t in the King’s halls or training in Camelot or off on some fucking quest, pacing around, writing essays he didn’t give a fuck about, hoping his grades were decent enough that people would just leave him the fuck alone.

Cecil Hobbes had never treated Valorous like the other teachers did, either with kid gloves as if he was going to shatter, or like he was a walking liability, or like he was impressive, somehow, and needed to be shown some kind of reverence or respect.

Old Cecil had treated him the same way he treated everyone else – like he was the scum of the earth, like Cecil fucking hated the sight of him.

It didn’t start until some weeks after Doug was cold in the ground in the cemetery on top of Fan Hill. The grass was just beginning to grow again, covering up the seam between the disturbed ground and the rest of the graveyard’s ground, when Mel looked out of the kitchen window, saw him standing there, and thought he was losing it.

He took himself to bed, and convinced himself it was just grief, just mourning, just the natural insanity of a widower’s mind.

But Doug was there the next night, and the next one after that.

He wasn’t doing anything. He wasn’t moving around, wasn’t waving, he was just standing there, his hands at his sides, his gaze on the house, on Mel. Just — there.

He was greyer than before and around his edges there was a sort of filmy nothingness, a lack of definition where he almost faded into the shadow of the woods behind him, the unnatural darkness of them threatening to swallow him whole.

The widower knew not to step into those woods at night. They were a place where nothing living still belonged.

Weekly Summary 23/10/2021

Good evening!

I’ve released two big stories this week, both adapted from TweetFics, and one of them is a precursor to another long piece that’s going to be coming out soon, featuring the dastardly Valorous King. I’ve also started work compiling 2 short story collections that should be available for purchase by the end of November/beginning of December - one will be collected erotica, and the other will be a collection of short stories rated K to M across Magic Beholden and the Dragonplanet.

Both will be available as eBooks on Smashwords and Amazon, and the latter will also be available as a paperback.

The prince was the only son to a small kingdom.

His father was not best pleased about his being his only heir, of course, just as the prince was not best pleased about being prince. He couldn’t leave, of course. He couldn’t travel. His father was terrified he’d be injured or lost or killed…

Or, naturally, that he wouldn’t come back.

When he was a teenager, he was occupied by classes in everything under the sun – long lessons in geography, learning the names of other families, memorising their complex and intersecting genealogies, studying his own family’s history, local history…

Nowadays, he was occupied with other things – overseeing administrative work, constantly working through sheaf after sheaf of stacked papers, redrafting one after the next, compiling minutes of the king’s courts, looking over paperwork within the palace and the kingdom proper.

His father liked to say it was important work, that he did it himself until he was king. He would say it was the best way to learn, to entrench oneself in the background running of the kingdom, to understand the economics, the noble obligation, the logistics. It wasn’t entirely true, of course – before his father took the throne, he was still permitted time for leisure, to play sports, to read, to relax.

He thought it was dangerous to allow his son things like that.

The prince understood, albeit in the way one understood but did not condone another’s motive for murder.

Everything he did was scheduled in one way or another, no matter his attempts to supersede or get out of whatever had been timetabled for him. If he took time to ride, he would find an ambassador waiting for him; if he went for a walk, he was met with the chairman of the Royal Bank; if he retired to his quarters to read, he would cross the threshold to find paperwork, if not a messenger, awaiting him.

He didn’t want to be king.

He had known this since he was a child, had always known it – he didn’t want to be king, and didn’t much want to be a prince, either, but there was no escape.

When he first found the young man in his room, he thought he was an assassin, lurking in the dark, and he lunged forward. He couldn’t have been older than twenty-five, small and delicate with a youthful plumpness to his cheeks, his arse, a roundness to his belly and chest. The prince had him pinned against the wall very easy, his dagger tight against the young man’s throat, but he realised in short order he had no blade of his own.

“Who are you?” he asked coolly, and the young man quivered, looking up at him with his eyes wide and his lips trembling.
