Sadly, we lost Mike Peters of The Alarm recently. But man, did he put up a fight. 30 years living with cancer - can you imagine? When I last saw him with his buddy Mike Karns for Mike’s 60th, we didn’t know it would be the last time, but thankfully I had a thought to get my three GOING FOR IT! questions in with him before he left, so here’s his advice, Hail Mary Moment, and his last words of wisdom to me that might get you. As you probably know, I only post positive and motivational content. It may not be the most popular or financially rewarding content and it may not fit into whatever algorithm social media has decided is what’s most relevant, but I try to put the good out there in the world - especially in a time when I feel like we need it the most. That said, I try to highlight good people doing good things. So, of course, I was proud to be at the premiere of The Last Rodeo in Fort Worth. Neal McDonough has also taken a hit from Hollywood based on his beliefs but he’s got a winner along with Mykelti Williamson (Bubba in Forrest Gump) and director Jon Avnet (who worked on Risky Business, The Mighty Ducks, and Fried Green Tomatoes), which is a story about a man who will do anything for his family, even at great risk to himself, which I can identify with and respect. Angel Studios is putting this one out and they also only do positive content (mostly faith-based) and so I will always support and applaud that. And I was honored to be there with my friend Sheela Marshall, the founder of Tequila Sheela, who has overcome so many obstacles including coming to this country with nothing and beating stomach cancer and is now running a great independent business. Let’s feature more of who inspires us. And because this kind of messaging gets lost sometimes, give a like or comment to show engagement for something good. My speech in New York recently says it all:

“Dr. Paul Salfen. That’s what I get to call myself now. My father, the Rev. Dr. Ronald Paul Salfen is a doctor, my grandfather, Dr. Grant Begley, was a doctor but did I think I would have such a distinct title? No, I didn’t. Titles mean a lot - especially when you never had one and had no guarantee you would ever have one. Editor-In-Chief was one I was proud to have, managing editor was great, partner was cool, founder was a proud moment, author was even better (shout out to my GOING FOR IT! book team), but “dad” is the best one I’ve had right next to son and brother.

We’re all in this room today because we earned our titles - and now several of you - including Dr. Busta Rhymes - can have a title that means something from people that really mean something. You see, Harvest Christian University is a brotherhood and sisterhood like no other I’ve seen and I’m honored to be a part of it. The mighty Sir Earl Toon of Kool & the Gang brought me to the celebration (yahoo!) with my co-host “Mr. Hail Mary”, Dr. Drew Pearson, and introduced me to the great Dr Jay and the mighty Dr Carl Robinson. Having the accolades - including a lifetime achievement award from President Biden has elevated me in the minds of others and has given me a sense of accomplishment that I never thought I’d have.

This is what we call on our show a Hail Mary Moment - that moment in your life or career where you had to go for it and it worked out. It doesn’t matter if you’re throwing or catching it - you are in the game and you’re winning right now.

Consider yourself lucky to be here. You have done something great. You were chosen - and you know in more way than one ⬆️ - so let’s count our blessings, not forget our prayers, and think about who’s next - and what great things you’ll do now because the great ones before us deserve that. God bless and congratulations to all of you.”

Dr. Paul Salfen - it’s official! What an honor to get my doctorate from Harvest Christian University and also receive the Lifetime Achievement Award from President Biden. And here’s what I said in my speech:

The road to get here isn’t easy. Today wasn’t even easy. We’re constantly in a fight to do what we do and do it well. Only God knows every struggle we have and Lord knows we’ve tried to hide that from Him. But He knows - and that’s why we’re here today. We did it. We went for it and we made it.

I’ve been profiling and featuring the journeys of notable people for 24 years professionally, but my journey started in high school and went through college at Penn State. Along the way to being in front of presidents and other world leaders, royalty, and spiritual leaders, the most famous actors, directors, musicians, producers, authors, CEOs and even astronauts I’ve met some of the greatest people and a few of them are here today. My co-host and friend Drew Pearson - Mr Hail Mary, Mr Clutch - or shall we say Dr Hail Mary, Dr Clutch and Mr Celebration - or Dr Celebration, Sir Earl Toon of recently Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inducted band Kool & the Gang, of course Dr Robinson and all at Harvest Christian University, Malcalm Snell and Phazz on our team, Eddie Henderson and Dr Darryl Johnson, and I couldn’t do this without the love and support of my parents here, Dr Ron Salfen and Peggy Salfen. And my heart and soul, my daughter Sofia Torres Salfen.

Not bad for a poor boy from Clarksdale, Mississippi - home of the blues - and son of a pastor who never once did a bad story on anyone in 30 plus years. I’m here to lift everyone up. As the great actor Sir Ben Kingsley said in my book, which was meant to inspire future generations ー GOING FOR IT!, in which Dr Pearson wrote the foreword said, “If your motives are pure, the angels will come.” And I believe they’re here today. I’m proud of every one of us. May the angels be with you, go Cowboys, and God bless you.

RIP Quincy Jones. He was a giant in the music business and there will never be another like him. He produced Michael Jackson’s Thriller, music by Frank Sinatra and Ray Charles and was a producer on Fresh Prince and The Color Purple - and let’s not forget he put together We Are the World.
