My Rock Awards
Hello and welcome to my Rock Awards blog. This is my list of the winners of my Rock Awards from 1970 onward. These awards are based on the Billboard charts from the first publish date of each year to the last publish date of each year. This is different than Billboard's year-end lists - their dates are from late in the previous year to October or November of the year in question.
Also, these awards are purely based on sales - not my opinion. So, someone may win the award for the year, but they wouldn't have necessarily been my pick. So, your pick may not win, either.
Each category will be listed in order, with the winner at the top.
The only subjective thing will be what is considered rock. In the early 70s, rock was still branching out into various sub-genres, so a lot of artists were considered rock and would likely be played on AOR stations back in the day, but perhaps their later music would not be (James Taylor, Carole King, Linda Ronstadt, and others come to mind). Later, more and more sub-genres appear, and some may not be considered traditionally rock, but if they got airplay on rock and/or alternative stations, that was good enough for me.
Again, this was subjective on my part. You certainly don't have to agree.
So, I will publish each year as I complete them. I have already completed several years and will publish when able. I hope you enjoy and please be kind and/or constructive in your comments.
One explanation: You will often see an artist have the #1 song or album of the year, but not be the top singles or albums artist. Those awards are a sum of all the singles and albums released by that artist in the calendar year. So, for example, an artist may release one single that does amazing and finishes out the year at #1, but another artists may release four or five singles in the year and, cumulatively, have a higher score for that reason.
