Free Music for Video

Here is a collection of free music sources for video that I have found to like and use often, which will be updated as I find more.

In all honestly, the main place I look for music nowadays is the YouTube Audio Library. If your videos are meant for YouTube, then this is an easy and straightforward way to find music already cleared by YouTube with licenses that are pretty generous (at most an attribution). However, it requires an account with YouTube, as this library is only accessible through YouTube Studio.

A great alternative is the Free Music Archive, which predominately has music under Creative Commons licenses. Two key facts I learned as I sourced my own music for videos is that under CC licensing, any use of music in video is considered derivative and that “non-commercial” generally, but not always, means personal use only. So practically speaking, I would start by looking for music with the “CC BY” and “CC BY-SA” licenses first and, depending on the artist, broaden my horizons to CC’s “NonCommercial” (or NC) licenses while always avoiding “NoDerivatives” (ND) works. With the “NonCommercial” license, because of the unspecificity of the license the artist often clarifies their own terms and most define it as unpaid work. So I’ve gotten in the habit of using it only for personal use, unless I understand the artist’s specific terms of use.

Or, in short, you can search the Free Music Archive by commercial video use.

Displaying/Documenting CRTs

I’ve been meaning to put together a resource on using CRTs for myself and others interested in this. This is just what I’ve learned from my research and practice working with them in my own work.

Displaying on CRTs

What I do when I want to output a video signal to a CRT is to convert a signal from a modern computer to an analog one. My current method is to convert a VGA signal to Composite/S-Video using this converter from Amazon. I also usually have to convert the VGA signal to Mini DisplayPort to connect it to an output device, such as my Macbook Pro. In the past, I’ve had issues using a comparable HDMI to Composite converter only outputting a black and white signal, but I did find success with this converter. The VGA converter is still more versatile and customizable for me, but the HDMI is more efficient and tidy for a similar price.

Documenting CRTs

I haven’t done this as much, but I have been in situations where I needed to take photos or videos of a CRT monitor so this is what I have learned so far about that. From this I also started to research this topic, and I think that this video by LGR is a good overview of most of the techniques (though it focuses specifically on computer CRTs). The main issue about documenting CRTs is getting an undesirable moiré pattern, which can be counteracted by putting the CRT screen slightly out of focus. What I found to be the most novel piece of info from the video was to use a polarizing filter to knock out glare coming from the screen, which was something I did have trouble with the last time I documented a CRT.

This pertains mostly to filming a CRT, but the last critical thing is to match the shutter speed to the refresh rate of the monitor to prevent flickering. For NTSC monitors (the dominant format in the US), this would be 1/60th for 60Hz. From LGR’s video, this is generally enough for consumer CRT TVs, but computer CRT monitors change in refresh rate based on what is running and that would need to be matched by the camera’s shutter speed.

I will update this post as I learn more and I hope this is helpful at some point, either to myself or someone else.

Knit Glove Pattern

I’ve recently been knitting, and I wanted to try my hands at making gloves. I however couldn’t find a pattern for a basic glove that used US size 8 needles, so I put one together myself using my sub-novice level of knowledge and thought it was worth sharing (it might not be a good pattern but my hand fits in it and that’s all I could ask for).

I used this video by VeryPink Knits to reference the basic techniques for a glove, and I would recommend watching it to get to know how to complete each of the steps. Something I noticed through doing that was that I knit in the round with the inside facing me (instead of the outside, which is what seems to be the norm), so this pattern uses purl instead of knit stitches to avoid me having to flip the glove inside-out at the end. If purling the entire glove sounds bad to you then I would knit every time the pattern calls to purl and vice versa.

Here is some more information about the gloves/pattern:

Yarn: Worsted-Weight (4 Medium) Gauge: 20 sts x 24 rows = 4" sq. Stockinette Size: This was written for a 8" hand circumference with a 2.5" long thumb, 3" index - ring fingers, and 2.5" pinky.

Key: St(s) = Stitch(es) K = Knit P = Purl M1PL = Make 1 Purl Left M1PR = Make 1 Purl Right BLCO = Backwards Loop Cast On P2Tog = Purl 2 Together PU&P = Pick Up and Purl

And here is the pattern:

Cast on 32 sts, split onto 3 needles (10 sts, 12 sts, 10 sts).

Cuff: K 2, P 2 for 12 rounds.

Thumb gusset: P 15, M1PL 1, P 2, M1PR 1, P 15. P 34 for 2 rounds. P 15, M1PL 1, P 4, M1PR 1, P 15. P 36 for 2 rounds. P 15, M1PL 1, P 6, M1PR 1, P 15. P 38 for 2 rounds. P 15, M1PL 1, P 8, M1PR 1, P 15. P 40 for 2 rounds.

Lower hand: P 15, slip 10 sts onto scrap yarn, BLCO 3, P 15. P 33 for 12 rounds.

Pinky: P 4, slip next 25 sts onto scrap yarn, BLCO 1, P remaining sts (P 4). P 9 for 12 rounds. P2Tog 2, P 1, P2Tog 2. Cut off yarn with a 6" tail, draw yarn end through remaining 5 sts.

Ring finger: P 4, slip next 17 sts onto scrap yarn, BLCO 1, P remaining sts (P 5). P 10 for 18 rounds. P2Tog 5. Cut off yarn with a 6" tail, draw yarn end through remaining 5 sts.

Middle finger: Slip 4 sts onto one needle and P 4, skip next 9 sts, BLCO 1, slip remaining 4 sts onto another needle and P 4, PU&P 1 from ring finger BLCO. P 10 for 18 rounds. P2Tog 5. Cut off yarn with a 6" tail, draw yarn end through remaining 5 sts.

Index finger: Slip remaining 9 sts onto 2 needles (5 sts and 4 sts) and P 9, PU&P 1 from middle finger BLCO. P 10 for 18 rounds. P2Tog 5. Cut off yarn with a 6" tail, draw yarn end through remaining 5 sts.

Thumb: Slip 10 sts from lower hand onto needles and P 10. PU&P 3 from lower hand BLCO. P 13 for 15 rounds. P2Tog 3, P 1, P2Tog 3. Cut off yarn with a 6" tail, draw yarn end through remaining 7 sts.

Weave in ends, block.
