to the game that found me thirteen years old; at the beginning of the summer before eighth grade, still grappling with feeling like an outsider and looking for the next big Something to orbit my whole world around. the game that hooked me with its fun ear-worm commercials and colorful characters.

to the game that found me again, now fifteen; as i was starting to really question who i really am and where i fit into the world, with an ill-planned haircut and a name that felt right enough at the time. the game that made me feel like a kid again when everything else was so confusing and scary, and gave me the room to... give playing the boy character a try.

to the game that once more found me at twenty; maybe more confused than ever, navigating adulthood aimlessly and clinging tight to the things that brought me an innocent sense of joy after having dream after dream dashed by circumstances out of my control. the game that nearly made me leap from my seat and brought me to happy tears the moment i realized it was really happening, and gave me a whole new appreciation for what came before.

to the series that helped me figure out who i am. to the series that kept me going through some of the most difficult transitional periods in my life so far. to the series that's made me laugh, made me cry, made me ragequit many MANY times lmao. to the series that made me fall a little in love.

to the series that, no matter what i go through and where i end up, will always be intrinsic to the very core of my being.

to the game that will always be "my thing".

i am glad you bring up my ship name/tag for wolfgang and atticus though cause i'm mildly proud of it <33 i love animal motifs in general so finding a phrase was an interesting process but kangaroo court really stuck cause it had a specific charm to it. a zoologist and a lawyer, kangaroo court :)!

🎸 DESIGN: Melville Poine, face concept 1

[NO SPOILERS]

"This is not a question for me to answer, yeah? There's no talking about the place where I was born, yeah?"

behold! i come bearing another boy: our mysterious friend Melville Poine, the Marine Life Wonder!

here's a dude who grew up impoverished on a far-off coast, hence his Rather Strange Accent and stranger name. he spent much of his childhood strumming guitars on the beach in-between mending boats and cod fishing. an insightful and quiet guy, no one in the Empress's lands knows the sea better than him, and that attracted the attention of the Monastery.

of course, you're not going to get much out of him in the way of backstory: he mostly avoids conversation with 99% of the cast and prefers his alone time. you try to talk to him and he bows and smiles and mumbles an apology before leaving the scene immediately. apparently his pops died under mysterious circumstances before he arrived at the Monastery, though, so i guess we can't blame him...

it's easy to fall into nasty stereotypes or boring tropes with "the foreigner." on top of that, Melville's not technically a foreigner: he's a subject of the Empress, just the one coming from furthest away. (second and third furthest are probably Yuwa and Hikari.)

so! design-wise, i wanted to go for a sandalpunk "stranger comes to town" kind of look in the face. he's a buckaroo with a guitar and his hat's somewhere between an ancient Grecian petasos and a yeehaw cap. all this comes together in a special kind of design you'd only find in A WONDERFUL DANGANRONPA.
