You want drivers with personality and then you can't even handle Franco Colapinto.
#people keep saying of bring back the sluts like jenson button#bring back the characters like young alonso#and Franco is right there and people despise him for it#when the nostalgia is strong but they can stomache even close to the reality#but i can#and i will adore this problematic man

Franco just does everything right. He knows what he has and it's taking perfect advantage of it

Franco didn't had the economical support or wasn't part of any drivers academy to get out of formula 3. I remember he opened like a go fund me to be able to afford his last f3 season. His career would have probably ended right there. Actually he was already testing endurance cars and planning to change to that category.
However he has one HUGE advantage. You can give that kid a microphone and I have yet to meet someone who can resist to his charm and charisma. I believe that is safe to say that Latin America has fallen in love with him. Even my dad, whom hates Instagram, every single time I tell him Franco posted something (or Alpine posted him) tells me to get in there and give a like a comment.
The #FrancoALaF2 (Franco to f2) actually got him sponsors and media coverage which ultimately help him get into the Williams academy the rest is history.
I don't wanna say "the lack of representation of Latin American drivers has given him an special advantage" cause of course moving from so far to be able to follow your dreams is itself a huge disadvantage. But he gets interview every week in Argentina. Everyone wants to sponsor him cause what he touches is immediate sold out. (which wouldn't be that drastic if other teams sold merch in more countries)
I feel like the public has given him so much love and he has give it back, he states how proud he is to be Argentinian and how he wants to represent his country. You can just tell how happy he is and that makes you love him even more
I can't wait to see him race again :)

#in general i find the whole racing versus winning thing to be very interesting#and the way some drivers believe in the sanctity of racing and others believe in the sanctity of winning fascinates me
Deltinha can you expand on this concepts? I got fascinated by them after reading the tags.
Thanks!
it kind of started when i listened to some of the sky sports podcasts where they were talking about the mclaren team orders situation. and i found what jenson said versus what nico said to be very interesting.
jenson was defending mclaren's policy of just letting their drivers fight it out on track, arguing that the racing was what the sport was supposed to be about. but then when nico was asked about it (on a different episode) he argued that mclaren should be using team orders to help lando because the point of the championship was to win, and you have to take every advantage you have because you don't know if or when you're going to get another chance.
and it made total sense to me that each of them was making that particular argument given who each of them is. jenson's whole thing is racecraft, he has such a unique driving style and was so admired for his racecraft even when he wasn't the fastest driver that it made sense for him to value the actual racing element above anything else. when he was talking about the team orders and mclaren's history of not issuing team orders, he said that he and lewis took wins off of each other, and if they'd been given team orders one of them probably could have won a championship [during the vettel/red bull dominance years]. but i think jenson could only say that because he already got his fairytale championship in 2009, and because he has canada 2011 to his name. if he didn't have those, particularly the wdc, i think he would look at his mclaren years very differently. and although jenson beat lewis across a season, lewis was overall the stronger driver, and if mclaren had given team orders, it's quite likely jenson would have been the one ordered to help lewis rather than the other way around. so in that sense, mclaren not having team orders and prioritising the "racing" helped jenson out a lot.
equally i think it makes total sense that nico values the winning over the racing. he spent a very long time being a very good driver in very bad cars, and when he finally got a good car, he had to face off against the most successful driver of all time. so it makes sense that the racing is not enough for nico, because it was never enough to be good, or even great, it was important to win. all of the effort he put in, the extremes he went to were not about becoming a better racer, they were about winning, and being able to call himself a champion. since retiring he's said that the only part of formula one he missed was winning, and although he's remained a part of the racing world, he's never raced again, unlike jenson who has raced in multiple other series. in the end it was the winning that fulfilled nico, and once he had that, he felt able to explore other worlds. additionally, i think nico's insecurities/self-esteem issues really affect this. he said in an interview that he didn't believe in himself at all throughout his career. while other drivers have talked about the need to view themselves as the best driver, and believe that given the right circumstances they can be champion, nico talked about how he never believed that, and so the thing that kept him going was his commitment to it. he committed to that championship 100% because he believed in the value of it. and that's why i think he argued that mclaren should have given team orders to help lando because he believes in the inherent value of a championship and of winning, and believes that you should commit to that, even if you don't win, rather than hoping the win comes to you.
there are some drivers that talk about racing as a priority and some that talk about winning as a priority, and i think it's interesting to see which is which, and why they've come to that conclusion. and with charles specifically, i think it would be incredibly interesting to see him choose between winning with anyone for the sake of winning over the possibility of winning with ferrari because of the ferrari of it all. what matters more to him, a championship, or a potential championship with ferrari?

Typical Colapinto fan. "I don't want Jack dropped because I don't want my boy at that team!" How about "I don't want Jack dropped because Jack is an excellent driver in his own right who's worked his ass off for that seat and should be given the chance to show it"? You'd destroy any career for your Colapinto. It's not enough to leave hate for Jack on every Alpine post, huh?
Need you to read what I wrote carefully. I don't want Jack to fail even if it means Colapinto gets another chance. But it doesn't matter what I want. Alpine are only giving Jack 5 races to catch up to Pierre which is a huge thing to ask for. If he doesn't deliver, and the chances are high, they're kicking him out. The Alpine higher-ups (Flavio Briatore) do not have faith in Jack. But Flavio has teased the possibility of Franco joining Alpine, and has spoken positively about him. Put the pieces together, Jack is being set up to fail so he can be replaced by either Franco or Paul Aron.
If anything, I'm mad that Franco is being treated as just a marketing tool by a lot of F1 fans and some of the paddock, and not being taken seriously because of his racecraft. That's my main problem with this situation. Yes he's charismatic and funny, but his actual skills behind the wheel are what we should be discussing more. I'm guilty of this myself and will try to do better in the future.
Lots of drivers on the grid, like Checo and Lewis, have spoken positively about how good Franco's doing. A year ago Franco was struggling to find sponsorships to fund his F2 campaign. And then he was a F2 rookie who got a lot less preparation before stepping up to F1 compared to others. The first time I ever heard of Franco was when he did that Free Practice in Silverstone. A couple of months later he was finishing out the season. It's crazy how much his life has changed in such a short time. If I never saw the hashtags his fans trended to raise awareness about his situation, I doubt I would have cared much or known about what was going on with his career. People get annoyed with Argentinians commenting under every official post to hire Franco but it was them bombarding the comments that made me realize how passionate his fans are. With that being said, Franco has shown enough for him to have a full-time seat and I want him to have that as his fan. No I wouldn't want it to be at the expense of Jack, but if that's what's gotta happen then it is what it is. Also I don't comment hate on posts where drivers could potentially see it because that's corny. I don't need the drivers to know that I exist and being irrelevant is peaceful.
#f1#formula 1#i hate seeing people get their dreams crushed#it's an awful feeling#Jack was brought in by the old guard before Ollie or Flavio were brought in#Ollie is Hi-tech first which is why Paul Aron is now there#Briatore is a literal convicted felon who cares enough about a win to cause all of crash gate#The rumours have been going about Jack since they did the private test and like#that sucks balls#Jack seems like a great dude and he worked his ass off and deserves a chance to show his quality#I dont want him to lose his seat 5 races in#I dont think Alpine was ever going to be the right team for him#I can also not want Franco there#they seem to want him more for his possible sponsors and I feel like he would be expoited more than nurtured#He's so fast and has raw talent and deserves to also show it#but not at the expense of Jack... but it looks like it might be going that way unless Jack really lands some insanly good point positions#and i hate it#i hate that his chance is already shrouded in doubt#i hate that people are jumping on Franco because of it and others are jumping on Jack#but its the way of f1#and Alpine is gonna Alpine if it means momey and wins for them#they dont give a fuck about Jack because they didnt give a fuck about Este#i side-eye alpine more than I even side-eye red bull

i love f1 because sometimes you get races where people are hardcore beefing with each other and slandering on live tv and we are blessed with actual miracles and then there's going to be one random subplot like wdym yuki tsunoda was contemplating the effects of global warming because of a beaver
