Ch. 14: A Turn of Events is finally up!!

“Colin? Helloooo, Colin!”

He sucked in a gasp as his eyes shot open, having been startled from his sleep. After a few blinks, he saw that he was face-to-face with his youngest sister.

“What the hell was that for?” Colin grumbled, rubbing the back of his neck. He’d unfortunately dozed off in one of the more uncomfortable armchairs in his mother’s drawing room.

“Language, brother,” Hyacinth mockingly scolded before giving him a wicked grin. “You were mumbling in your sleep.”

He felt his body tense up for a moment, the memory of his dream returning to him.

Oh, dear God. He’d been dreaming about… Well, taking into account the uncomfortable drop in his stomach and the heat that had risen to his cheeks, it was quite obvious what his dream had entailed. He only hoped that his damn mumbling hadn’t incriminated him.

Hi! I'm writing a slowburn Polin fic :)

“For God’s sake, leave me be,” he tugged his body away as his arms tightened around each other.

That only made his brothers’ grins widen. “What about Eliza Kensington? Josephina Merryweather? Or perhaps…” Benedict tapped a finger thoughtfully against his chin until his face took on a wicked smile, “Penelope Featherington?” The eldest Bridgerton let out a hearty laugh as Colin felt his ears redden.

It was a well-known fact throughout the Bridgerton family that their mother, Violet, had suggested Penelope to Colin as a potential wife a dozen times, at least. She reminded him to dance with her at parties, invited her over for tea weekly, and was constantly mentioning to Colin about “what a nice girl she was.” It was extremely frustrating.

It wasn’t that Penelope was ugly or unpleasant. She was actually pretty in her own way and had a sharp wit. But Colin had no desire to marry anyone, let alone her, and he was worried that all of this talk could get back to her. He was well aware of the effect that he (and his brothers) had on women, and he was quite certain that Penelope Featherington was no exception.

“This isn’t a conversation we should be having on the front steps,” he glared at them both, the frown looking quite displaced on his normally jovial face. “… and I am certainly not going to marry Penelope Featherington!” Colin added, trying to make his point with finality.

Anthony opened his mouth, a smirk playing on his lips. But the three brothers were silenced by a petrifying squeak that came from the slightly ajar door a few feet away.

“Oh.”

Colin felt his blood boil in horror as the three men turned in unison to see a paler-than-normal Penelope staring at them. She didn’t look upset… Exactly. She looked embarrassed, startled, and… Hurt. She clearly looked hurt, and it made him feel absolutely awful.
