Addressing Problems vs. Name Calling

There are a lot of people on the internet trying to persuade other people to listen to their opinions by calling other people names—racist, transfobic, homofobic, sexist, to name a few—but is doing this really helping anyone? To be fair, a lot of these people being called those names are, in fact, racist/transfobic/homofobic/sexist/etc., but is calling them that really going to help them change their world view? The expected result might be that the person will crumble once they realize that they’re a nasty racist/transfob/homofob/sexist/etc., but usually when attacked with hostile language they’re more likely to get defensive, dig their heels in, and start arguing about the labels while the important parts of what was said go ignored. Even in the “best case scenario” where they do listen, hate-labels tend to have the effect of shutting down any potential discussion of the topic in the future. Often a person won’t say what they once thought for fear of being called nasty names. They might even spend nights crying in their room because someone told them they’re a bad person, instead of feeling empowered to be better. Labels stick to people, even after they’ve expired, and it’s hard for a person not to feel defined or boxed in by what others say about them.

This isn't definite, of course—some people really do step up in the face of being called out for their bigotry, and those people are certainly worthy of respect--but isn’t there a better way to address problems than resorting to juvenile name calling and click-bait buzz words? Back when I was in English class in Highschool learning how to write argumentative essays, my teacher made a point of telling us to avoid using pronouns such as I or You as much as possible. Why? Because the minute the word “I” is used, it makes an argument just the author’s opinion rather than fact, making it impersonal and unimportant. When “you” is used in an argument, it makes it personal to the person on the other end of the essay. Suddenly it’s no longer an intellectual experiment—now it’s about “you”, and when everything is about “you”, whatever argument the author is presenting becomes a much bigger pill to swallow.

Instead of making an argument for why someone is racist, what if we simply wrote an argument about why people of all races should be treated with respect? What if instead of stating that people are transfobic, we helped people understand why people transition and what sort of struggles they face? What if instead of calling someone homofobic, we told them why same-sex marriages and partnerships are important? What if instead of calling someone sexist, we talked about the strengths of women and their irreplaceable contributions to the world? What if we started lifting instead of tearing down, and instead of laughing at the people in the figurative ditch we got down there and helped them climb out?

I know a lot of people who weren’t homofobic/racist/sexist/transfobic growing up—they just had questions. They asked those questions, with genuine curiosity, and then were told that because they had those questions they were bad people. Almost no one bothered to answer them, or explain to them why their views were incomplete. Instead they shot them down, told them not to have questions, and pretty soon those people I knew started becoming all those things everyone told them they were. It’s normal to have questions, and it’s good to look for answers. Not one person on this earth knows all the answers. None of us are perfect—we’re all just trying to make sense of what’s in front of us. Don’t be the person who stands on a mountain scaled by asking questions only to throw rocks down at others who are trying to make the same climb. Just because they aren’t at the summit yet doesn’t mean they aren’t trying. It’s impossible to know what a person is going through at any given time, or why they think the way they do. Especially when there’s a barrier of a screen and some imperfect walls of text preventing us from seeing the whole picture. Just be kind, be generous, and assume the best of people. Most people want to be right, so just try to help them get there. It will make the world a better place.

Mavuika ~ Pyro Archon Redesign

I'll be completely honest. I feel like Genshin fell off with it's character designs after Capitano. Mavuika has Genshin's blatant colorism and the fear that a lot of media has to giving female characters musculature. On top of that, she doesn't even look like she belongs in the game!

So, first thing I changed was that damned motorcycle. With the technology we've seen it makes no sense, for me the most notably modern thing would be the kamera which strongly resembles box cameras from the late 1800s and early 1900s. Motorbikes like the one Mavuika has did not exist back then. The second problem with this motorcycle is that it looks like a sports or racing motorcycle. Why would she be using a sports bike when war motorcycles exist? And the last problem is that literally no one else uses them.

I did debate just, scrapping the bike completely. But I decided to try something.

I think Natlan could have had a lot of potential to include war weaponry that was created in the first World War as well as other earlier wars (guns, boms, chemical warfare, cavalry, motorcycles, etc).

So, I gave her a motorcycle that resembles WW1 motorcycles. Also, these would not be exclusive to her. In the battle against the abyss people could be running circles in bike while the passenger shoots down abyssal creatures or cuts them down (idk if I'm explaining myself well here, but I think some cool fighting could happen).

The next thing I did was make her muscular.

After that I went onto clothing, which ended up being a mix of traditional Polynesian Hawaiian clothing and Aztec clothing. I did this because Mavuika's name comes from Mahuika, a Hawaiian fire goddess, and the very Aztec like sun symbolism in Natlan.

I gave her a feather mahiole helmet and a ahu'ula feather cape. Feather were pretty important especially as symbols of status in Hawaiian culture. The colors have different meanings and the most expensive would be yellow (I suggest looking up more info if you're interested since I am not the most knowledgeable and it's an interesting topic). I would make the feathers yellow, red and black, for both her status of an archon (yellow-someone important) and for the meaning I found with these colors (this might not be entirely accurate, but it's what I found). Red for fire, blood, power, and strength, yellow for the sun and warmth, and black for death, mourning (death is always present in war, so it fits) and the sacred.

I also made a pattern for it. These would be the general shapes, I took them from her base character motifs.

Apart from these accessories, clothes were a tad difficult (turns out when it's hot and there's shade, less clothes can be better). i didn't want her to be completely nude since, riding a motorcycle and keeping yourself from getting (mildly) wounded is harder without clothing. So, I turned to the clothes of Aztec warriors and found tlahuiztlis, which are kinda like jumpsuits. So I gave her that and replaced the knot (?) with a malo loincloth.

I also let her back be exposed since I wanted to be able to have more space for Hawaiian kākau tattoos.

Again, I took the motifs from her base design.

Last but not least, I set her on fire.

The fire goddess Mahuika has fire nails. So I gave Mavuika fire nails, but I thought that since her ult has her hair set on fire. So I did both.

I thought it could be cool that in her ult she'd burn and that in her base form it would be like crackling charcoal ready to burst into flames.

Barbatos ~ Anemo Archon Redesign

Hey, don't you guys think Barbatos looks suspiciously similar to Venti? 😳

So, Venti actually has a couple archon designs (two cutscene designs, statue design and the manga design). The one in statues is nice (the one from birds with courage is nice too), kinda toga-like. But.. the other ones.

I really don't like them, the one from the manga especially. It really feels like they gave Venti a cloak and ran out of ideas on clothing, the bikini shorts thingy feels like such a cop out. I feel like it might have been better to let him be nude or something like that.

Anyways, my first redesign was more like the toga design, but I wasn't quite happy with it. So I started from the beginning and looked at his little spirit design.

I gave him a bigger cloak and made him look a little more spirit-like. I gave him dark bird legs and those fluffy foot feathers. I also left the tattoos, because I like them.

I gave him a little piece of fabric for interest and stuff. Also added some elements from the four winds again, added some dandelions on the fabrics. I put the Andrius teardrop thingy to the cloak and some little wings for Venessa. I also added a little collar that reminds me of Dvalin.

I also added some mottled spots on his wings and some feathers to his face (don't think that's too noticeable.

And finally, my favorite part. The liripipe; since my first genshin redesign I wanted to give him one so badly (but I also wanted to give him his soft caul hat). This was my opportunity and I took it.

First the liripipe is such a distinct little thing, it can fly around as he flies and the wind pushes it around. Also, the length of the liripipe was a status symbol (more fabric you can afford). So what if the wind spirits and similarly less powerful spirits have shorter liripipes.

Arlecchino ~ The Knave Redesign

My original plan was to do all the (playable) archons before doing other character. But, this Monday, when I was having lunch with my friends, I won my first fifty fifty!!!

So, this redesign is a celebration!

For starters, I adore her design. There are so many characters from Fontaine who's design are just chef's kiss, so I found this redesign a little difficult.

Most of the redesigning I did was to her body type. I gave her a more pear shaped body to tie in her design with her spider motif a little more (smaller thorax=smaller chest/upper body, bigger abdomen=bigger hips/lower body). I also tried to give her long limbs, but I don't feel like it comes across to well. I gave up on giving her spindly spider-like limbs, but I did try to make her fingers sharp and narrow. I did give her muscle, but with her coat and ruffle bell bottoms (those are so cool, I want them) they aren't very noticeable.

I also gave her a slightly hooked nose to elude to birds of prey and also I feel like there isn't a lot of difference in noses when it comes to anime style characters and noses are fun to draw.

I also gave her a scar running across her jaw and a mole under her lip. In another perspective I would have given her two moles under her lip to resemble spider bite piercings. And if she was wearing a more revealing outfit I would definitely give her more scars.

Now clothes, there only major change is that I gave her a hat. I wanted to call back to commedia d'ell arte arlecchinos, but there are so many different designs for them. The most consistent thing I found was diamond/triangle patterns, lots of colors and (most of the time) hats.

She already has a diamond pattern in multiple parts of her design and color is difficult to communicate in a colorless drawing unless they are contrasting shades.

I was kind of scared of giving her a hat since she is by all accounts an imposing looking figure and the arlecchino hats are a little silly. I mean, I felt like this one was the least silly, and even then I was sceptical about how it looks (the original reference just has one feather slap dap in the middle). At first she did look like a silly little goober. I don't know if it's the sharper feather and the spider spikes or the fact that the feather isn't front and center, but it's grown on me.

Now minor changes (there aren't many)!

First off, the shoes. I gave her little bows on her shoes; I've seen a couple arlecchino depictions with bows on their shoes, albeit bigger. I also gave her little spikes at the tip of her shoe to call back to birds of prey and spiders. I also put a geometric triangle pattern on the soles of her shoes.

I also gave her one more flap on her coat thingy and changed her earrings to a triangle pattern (it's basically impossible to notice).
