"Perpollo is wrong on so many levels..."
List to me, please. Why is it wrong? And who are you to decide if it is wrong. I would really like to know.
I have seen a few harpies going after a friend of mine, and their argument to invalidate why she dislikes Perc*Beth is hunting her down by shipping Perpollo.
I am not going to enter in anti-perc*beth discussion. My opinion on the matter is very much open. My only comment on that matter: people have the right to have a different interpretation about something - especially in literature - than yours.
Now let's address the elephant in the room:
⢠First argument: "Percy is a minor"
They used the arts to say that Percy was a minor to pass @ackerlikesmen as a non-relient person... and the fact is... No. Percy isn't.
Now let me clarify, since these people are as smart as Polyphemus to the point they need to be told word by word to understand something simple.
Percy isn't a minor in the art @ackerlikesmen did. She pointed out many times she aged up the character in her art.
While in a fandom, you can make art (be it on fanart, be it on fanfic) about a character and age them up on it. It is something pretty common... In any fandom you go. Especially in the ones you make modern au, or cafeteria au when the original setting is passed in high school or school. You will see plentiful fanarts about older Anya with Damian from spyxfamily, so they can write a fic where both of them are teenagers who have a crush on each other. Most part of these stories are literally: hurt/comfort, fluff, idiots in love, t-rated. You will see many fics in BNH about any ship in which they are adult heroes to make a ship sail. Even before the end of Naruto shippuden, people wrote tons and tons of fics and fanarts of adult!Naruto, adult!Sasuke, adult!Sakura, adult!Gaara to the point when the actual canon adult characters designs appeared people got disappointed with it.
It used to be very much commun in HP fandom as well when I was in it, to age characters up to write a more mature fic, or a fic which passes in a professional environment, such as a lot of drarry as magical-police officers fanfics and fanarts out there. There are many other couples I am not going to quote here, since it is not the point.
In the end, these accusations are not done in good faith. It is made up to make an appeal to ridiculous.
I am not inventing words:
"Appeal to ridiculeĀ (also calledĀ appeal to mockery,Ā ad absurdo, or theĀ horse laugh)Ā is anĀ informal fallacyĀ which presents an opponent's argument asĀ absurd,Ā ridiculous, orĀ humorous, and therefore not worthy of serious consideration."
And to simplify your understanding:
Falacy: an idea that a lot of people think is true but is in fact false.
Ad absurdo is not sustainable in a discussion, much less in a debate. It is rather childish, in fact, to use it in such places.
Now with that said: there are tons of p*ercabeth fics and fanarts out there, way more than perpollo - or nicercy to that matter - with mature, sugestive content. As it is very easy to find their fans giggling over the stable scene, or implying the fact that Rick isnt innocent for making Percy living alone and Ann*beth having a hat that permits her to be invisible, or how you see many fans fangirling using the scene where Percy talks about "desert" with Ann*beth nearby. There are many other examples. You only need to search pjo in TikTok or Tumblr, and you will see it.
Where is your morality then, when you start fangirling and obsessing with the idea of two teenagers having sex while you are a grown adult? Where are your worries with "underage"?
Hands down. That is only a food for tought.
Eitherway: So the art you showned with "minor percy"? Debunked.
⢠Second argument: the age gap
Honestly, I find this argument with the immortal x mortal trope rather ridiculous. It can bother you, and it is your right to dislike it.
But in fiction an immortal is not bound by the same laws of humans, simply because they lived centuries and millenia. They are not humans, some immortals have never even been a human in some point of their lives. There is no "base IRL" to say how they would act and behave or the psychology of such beings. We never had contact with one.
They are myths and legends.
You are not going to see Lord Apollon walking down the streets of Creta, nor a vampire running around at night on London, or see fairies building something on a garden in ireland, or see kamis and yÅkais in the forests of Japan. For many, these beings do not exist. (I am not going to enter in faith here.)
Every person they would have a relationship with, the age gap would still be huge. A lady, or a man, with 75 yrs old, would still be considered rather young to a being who have lived thousands and thousands of years if we take it to real world.
What it is a great time to remember: This is fiction.
And gods - and other immortal mythological beings - falling in love with humans are in every culture you can think of, and still exists in media to this day: From the terrible cringe romance between Edward and Bella from Twilight, to Jane Foster and Thor from Marvel (comics and movie).
In greek mythology?
You have Pelops and Poseidon.
Apollo and Hyacinthus
Hermes and Crocus
Many other examples to count.
If someone is writing about a divine, mythological beings in fics: It is up to the writer decide how they will write such beings in the narrative.
You may find criticism on the portrayal, but that will happen whenever you make something public.
Every fic I read of Perpollo are with adult!Percy, be it fem!Percy or not. That is for my comfort, because I am not comfortable otherwise.
In the end of the day: you have the right to dislike the trope, but not act as a pantheon of morality and condemn other people who likes it.
⢠Third argument: "They are cousins"
So is Ann*beth and Percy. Sorry to tell you this, but you can't decide when you use the "Gods don't have DNA in riordanverse" excuse as something valid and when it is not. You fall into a contradiction.
Point taken: it is greek mythology. I have read a few works of Sophocles (... And Jocasta and Oedipus was disturbing, ngl) and Hesiod. I can assure you, when I put my hands on any greek mythology related material, I am very much aware of my triggers, and I know how to deal with incest in these works. What most part of the PJO fandom doesn't seem to be mature enough to do.
One hypocrisy - not on you, i dont know your opinion regarding this - but I find rather funny in these discussions is how Lady Persephone and Lord Hades are put on a pedestal as the perfect couple in greek mythology by these people, when Hades literally kidnapped her. Persephone is his niece, Hades is her uncle. But I don't see many people out there condemning them for incest, abduction, and forced marriage. This is not related to the discussion. Now going back to the post...
⢠Argument four: "Percy hates the gods/Apollo"
Point one: That is a lie.
Point two: It is a crack ship.
Let me make it clear: Percy do not hate the gods as much as you believe he does. Actually if we take the books it is rather confusing how he feels about them. (Now. That is Rick's fault for not being consistent with characterization...) but
Percy canonically has very contradicting feelings towards his father from love to resentment. What it is fair, and realistic, with we are being honest.
Percy canonically goes to Atlantis, and canonically Amphitrite bakes him cookies.
Percy is canonically Hermes's friends.
Percy canonically cared for Bobby in the end of House of Hades.
Percy canonically respects Artemis.
Most part of the time, he seems indifferent or annoyed towards most part of the gods, with only a few exception such as Zeus and Ares. Annoyance, dislike and hatred are two very different things. Luke hated the gods. Percy does not.
Now about Percy hating Apollo: As a crack ship, the author can write anything about them. Literally. The only limit is imagination. He can make Percy start being friend of Apollon, surpassing his distrust on him. He can make Percy being indifferent of him at first. Or else. Or they can just jump and write "established relationship" so they can write a one shot fluff.
It is crack. It is supposed to be funny and relied entirely on imagination.
You wanna defend your case, use valid arguments instead of backlashing people for having a different opinion - and ship - than your own.

The Ultimate Percy Jackson Characterization Masterpost
Because I have been talking about this for months and a lot of other people have too, but itās disjointed. I want to compile it, since his mischaracterization breaks my heart and makes me want to scream with rage. Please add if you think of something I didnāt! Iām also starting the tag ā#percy jackson defense squadā, so feel free to start dumping your salt and rage and theories and ideas in there because I wanna hear them!
Trigger warnings for mentions of suicidal thoughts, sexual abuse, child abuse, and domestic violence.
Percy had a really, really rough childhood.
Percy was abused. A lot of people donāt realize the gravity of this maybe ācause we were young when we read it and itās written with sarcasm, and it has a Cinderella-story type vibe (not that Cinderella wasnāt also abused, but my point is, childrenās fiction commonly glosses over abuse). BUT LISTEN. Gabe is an alcoholic who regularly drinks in front of Percy (who is twelve), Gabe verbally demeans Percyās mother right in front of him, Gabe bullies Percy into funding his gambling, dumps beer bottles and cigar ashes all over Percyās room (HEāS FUCKING TWELVE), Gabe physically and probably sexually abused Sally for years, Percy literally says that he would rather live on the streets or join the military than live with Gabe, Gabe literally turned THE ENTIRE NATION against Percy and branded a completely innocent child as a fugitive just for fucking money and media attention.
Percy hates Gabe so much that he barely even sees him as a human being. He uses the three-fingered claw that is used TO WARD OFF IMMORTAL FORCES OF EVIL THAT COME FROM THE DEPTHS OF TARTARUS against Gabe (AND IT WORKS) because that is how much Gabe has traumatized him. Gabe makes him so angry and vengeful that at the age of twelve, Percy strategically plans to murder him (Percyās never killed a human being before or since).
Percy was physically abused.Ā He instinctively reaches for Riptide when he encounters Gabe at the end of the Lightning Thief, which is an instinct that he has when he feels physically threatened. And thereās this line about the gambling money from the beginning,Ā āHe called that ourĀ āguy secret.ā Meaning, if I told my mom, he would punch my lights out.ā This is written with heavy sarcasm, but I got news for you: itās a kids series, and this is too disturbing to just write flat out, but he is speaking literally.
@lililibird wrote a gorgeous post about how Percy was abused here
Percy also comes from a relatively poor background:Ā āWe were always struggling with money. Between my momās night classes and my private school tuition, we could never afford to do special stuff like shop for a skateboard.ā-Sea of Monsters. He hates kids who throw their money around:Ā āThey were juvenile delinquents, like me, but they were rich juvenile delinquents.ā-Lightning Thief. Heās really insecure about it, too: āWhat I didnāt tell them was that Iād have to get a summer job walking dogs or selling magazine subscriptions, and spend my free time worrying about where Iād go to school in the fall.ā He feels like an outsider because of it: āMy heart sank. Grover had a summer home. Iād never considered that his family might be as rich as the others at Yancy.ā
Percy was an outcast growing up, and never had a lot of friends. The education system is stacked against him because of his learning disabilities, and he probably faced a lot of ableism growing up. He thinks his neurodiversity makes him stupid and expects teachers and students to think so as well. When Chiron (as Mr. Brunner) tries to tell him that heās a special kid, he takes it as an insult because heās used to being singled out for his disabilities, and tears up, saying,Ā āThanks a lot, sir, for reminding me.ā -Lightning Thief
Percy also grew up thinking his father didnāt want him (which really isnāt all that untrue). When he first meets Poseidon, his emotions are absolutely hearbreaking: āWrongdoing.Ā A lump welled up in my throat. Was that all I was? A wrongdoing? The result of a godās mistake?ā
His authority issues and his heavy use of sarcasm are a direct result from his childhood. Sarcasm is a coping mechanism that he uses to avoid thinking of himself as a victim. Authority issues stem from growing up under this domineering stepfather, and also due to his birth father leaving him and his mother. This is why Percy hates Dionysus so intensely: Dionysus reminds him disturbingly of Gabe. Itās why heās so conflicted about helping the gods. It stays with him for all the books.
@jason-gracefully wrote a post hereĀ about how this abuse has a lasting impact on Percy that is really insightful
Percy thinks so badlyĀ of himself.
Percy literally hates himself. He doesnāt believe heās a half-blood because he thinks heās such a failure. He compares himself to Gabe because he feels so guilty,Ā ābetween the two of us, we make my momās life pretty hard.ā Heās constantly thinking stuff like, āWhat was so great about me? A dyslexic, hyperactive boy with a D+ report card, kicked out of school for the sixth time in six years.ā -Lightning Thief
This self-hatred never fucking goes away, either, not even as Percy starts to pull of some pretty impressive shit?
āBut Percy didnāt feel powerful. The more heroic stuff he did, the more he realized how limited he was. He felt like a fraud. Iām not as great as you think, he wanted to warn his friends. His failures, like tonight, seemed to prove it. Maybe thatās why heād started to fear suffocation. It wasnāt so much drowning in the earth or the sea, but the feeling that he was sinking in too many expectations, literally getting in over his head.ā -Mark of Athena
He never thinks of himself as a hero and he hates the spotlight and gets embarrassed being the center of attention and is bad at taking compliments.
Most of his internal monologue is really pessimistic and heās constantly remarking that he said or did something stupid (literally too many examples to cite, but you canāt get very far without seeing it if you pick up a pjo book).
All Percy ever wanted was to be normal.
Thatās it. Thatās all.
Heās miserable after Poseidon claims him because heās finally found a place to fit in and no, of course not, heās the first son of Poseidon to be born in 70 years, Zeus is trying to kill him and thereās a prophecy about how heās going to decide the fate of the world.
He keeps going back into the mortal world even though itās dangerous, because he just wants to be normal.
He starts spending time with Rachel between Battle of the Labyrinth and Last Olympian because he mentions that he needs to remind himself the mortal world is still out there, and he just needs a break.
He turns down godhood, because he just wants to grow up. (people make this about Annabeth, and sheās part of it, but far from the only reason. The significance of this as far as percabeth goes is that he decided that he wanted her to be a partĀ of his future, but there was literally no way that Percy would have accepted godhood, Annabeth or no Annabeth.)
He literally starts crying when he gets to Camp Jupiter and realizes that, yet again, heāll be an outcast, despite not even remembering his past. Like, this need to be accepted and find a home runs so deep that it transcends memory.
So OF COURSE he starts crying again when he sees New Rome, because heās been searching for a safe home his entire life? Itās everything heās ever wanted?
NOBODY WILL JUST LET HIM BE NORMAL. JUST LET HIM LIVE.
Percy. Cannot. Forgive himself. For. Anything.
āNot forgiving himself for his mistakes was one of Percyās biggest talents.ā -Mark of Athena.
He feels guilty about the sacrifices his mom made for him, and is unable to accept that she did it because she loved him.
He blames himself for Biancaās death and actually says,Ā āIt shouldāve been me.ā Every time he looks at Nico he thinks of how he failed both of them and he spends the entire next book trying to make up for that.
He wiped Bobās memory because Bob was trying to kill him, and he was weak and injured and desperate to get away, so he acted in self-defense, but still feels ashamed and furious at himself for doing it:Ā āHeād never felt so low and dishonorable, so unworthy of having a friend.ā And then heās choking on poison in the heart of Tartarus, thinking itās his own fault forā¦. for not visiting a Titan who tried to kill him? (would you go visit someone who attempted to murderĀ you?Ā i wouldnāt.)
BOB TRIED TO KILL HIM. HE WAS TRYING TO RUN PERCY THROUGH. WITH A SPEAR. AND ITāS HIS OWN GODDAMN FAULT THAT HE GOT TOSSED INTO THE LETHE. Not to mention that Percy was already dying from a really bad shoulder wound, and acted in self defense the only way he had available to him, since he was too injured to fight. Percy barely escaped with his life. Percyās not a bad person at all for not visiting Bob, but he thinks he is, and you can hell bet heās never going to get over that, especially after Bobās sacrifice at the end of the book.
He blames himself for leaving Calypso as well? As though there was anything wrong with the way he treated her? As though they didnāt only know each other for two weeks? As though he wasnātĀ fourteenĀ and should not have been expected to spend the rest of his life pining for her? As though youāre a bad person if you donāt fall in love with someone whoās in love with you? As though he didnāt offer to come back and Calyspo told him not to try? As though he didnāt speak her name in the throne room of Olympus, as though he didnāt look Zeus in the eye and remember the name of Calypso, the poor girl cursed to solitude by the Fates who saved his life? As though Calypso wasnāt his biggest,Ā What if?
I pray that Leo and Calypso arenāt endgame because otherwise heās going to have to put up with that guilt for the rest of his life and itās completely unwarranted.
āāYou wouldāve done the same for me.ā It was true. I guess we both knew it. Still, I felt like somebody was poking my heart with a cold metal rod.ā -Last Olympian. Like listen, he straight up admits that he also would have taken a knife for her, but he stillĀ canāt accept that Annabeth took one for him.
whatever you do donāt think about percy mourning all the campers he couldnāt save whatever you do donāt think about himself shaking himself awake in the middle of the night crying because he canāt stop seeing the faces of all the kids who died in the war, whatever you do donāt think about him starting his life and thinking every time he does something new that there are kids who will never get this chance because he couldnāt save them, donāt think about him watching their shrouds burn and wishing it was him
Percy is suicidal and it goes completely unresolved.
āI felt like drowning myself. The only problem: I was immune to drowning.ā -The Lightning Thief
āThe last thing I remembered was sinking in a burning sea⦠and wishing I were able to drown.ā -The Sea of Monsters
āHe couldnāt blame anyone else for his troubles. Not the gods. Not Bob. Not even Calypso, the girl heād left alone on that island.ā -The House of Hades. Listen to me. Heās dying in Tartarus alone after sacrificing years of his life to trying to save the world and being a good person, and he thinks he deserves it. HE THINKS HE DESERVES IT.
āThing is, as I was choking just now, I kept thinking: this is payback for Akhlys. The Fates are letting me die the same way I tried to kill that goddess. And⦠honestly, a part of me felt I deserved it.ā A PART OF ME FELT I DESERVED IT. Like. Percy. You need help. You canāt just⦠thatās so unhealthy.
Percy is afraid of himself.
āI hadnāt been in control ofĀ myself in that mountain. Iād released so much energy Iād almost vaporizedĀ myself, drained all the life out of me. Now I found out Iād nearly destroyedĀ the Northwest U.S. and almost woken the most horrible monster everĀ imprisoned by the gods. Maybe I was too dangerous. Maybe it was safer forĀ my friends to think I was dead.ā -Battle of the Labyrinth. MAYBE I WAS TOO DANGEROUS. MAYBE IT WAS SAFER FOR MY FRIENDS TO THINK I WAS DEAD.
This also goes hand in hand with being suicidal, because thinking āmaybe everything would be better if I was deadā is definitely going to get you to the point where you say āmaybe Iāll just do it myself.ā
āMy expression in the picture was fierceādisturbing, evenāso it was hard to tell if I was the good guy or the bad guy, but Rachel said Iād looked just like that after the battle.ā -Last Olympian
āI might have even laughed once or twiceāa crazy laugh that scared me as much as it did my enemies.ā -Last Olympian
And like, of course thereās the part with Akhlys, and Iām sure I donāt have to explain how he spends the entirety of the next book trying to apologize for losing control just that one time because 1. he scared himself, 2. heāll never forgive himself for scaring Annabeth and hurting Akhlys that much, 3. and he also thinks this means he deserves to die, and that is just such a loaded character arc that Iām not even sure which heading to put it under, but Iām putting it under here because I think the linchpin in that scene is that Percy (and Annabeth) really didnāt realize that he was capable of something like that. Itās a really dark scene, and he disturbed himself (and Annabeth, which also puts a wedge in their relationship), and it causes really serious repercussions. Dude, that needs to be resolved.
Percy also like, really has a dark side and a serious temper, which is where a lot of this fear of himself comes from, but @ofswordsandpens already covered that beautifullyĀ here.
Other people are afraid of Percy.
āSomething changed in Phobosās expression. He looked surprised, maybe even nervous. āThe son of Poseidon? The one who made Dad angry?āā -Demigod Files (Percy Jackson and the Stolen Chariot)
āI couldnāt kill him. He was immortal. But you wouldnāt have known that from his expression. The fear god looked afraid.ā -Demigod Files (Percy Jackson and the Stolen Chariot)
āBelieve me, revenge is coming. One of these days, heās going to be sorry. Why am I waiting? Just strategy. Biding my time and waiting for the right moment to strike. I am not scared, okay? Anybody says different, Iāll rearrange their dental work.ā -Demigod Files (Interview with Clarisse LaRue, Daughter of Ares)
āLeoās legs trembled. The way Percy looked at him made him feel the same as when Jason summoned lightning. Leoās skin tingled, and every instinct in his body screamed, Duck!ā -Mark of Athena. This description is so Extra itās almost funnyĀ like I canāt believe this is actually a canon line sdkfasdjk;sadf
āPiper guessed that Percy hadnāt meant to cause so much damage, but his glowering expression made her want to leave the ship as soon as possible.ā -Blood of Olympus.
āSince sheād come back from Tartarus, Annabeth had told Piper about a lot of scary things that had happened down there. At the top of her list: Percy controlling a tide of poison and suffocating the goddess Akhlys.ā -Blood of Olympus. AT THE TOP OF HER LIST. AT THE TOP OF HER LIST.
Annabeth then goes on to cry about how she canāt get his expression out of her head, and says sheās angry at him for frightening her.
āWhat would Percy be like if he wanted to act scary?ā -Blood of Olympus. (we are still talking about the poison here. yes, still.)
āāShe died too easily, considering how much torture she put you through. She deserved worse.ā Annabeth couldnāt argue with that, but the hard edge in Percyās voice made her unsettled. Sheād never seen someone get so angry or vengeful on her behalf. It almost made her glad Arachne had died quickly.ā -House of Hades. I mean, I also thought Arachneās death was stupid so I donāt blame him, but.
āEverybody was looking at meāwith concern, or pity, or maybe a little fear.ā -Last Olympian
āSuddenly I realized that despite her angry attitude, she was afraid of me. She probably thought I was going to fight her for control of the river, and she was worried she would lose.ā -Battle of the Labyrinth
āāLuke feared you,ā the Titanās voice said. āHis jealously and hatred have been powerful tools. It has kept him obedient. For that I thank you.āā -Battle of the Labyrinth
ā I grabbed him by the shirt, which seriously wasnāt like me, but the stupid old goat was making me mad.ā -Last Olympian. This is when he literally frightens Leneus so bad that he runs away into the woods.
āHades swallowed. āNow, Jackson, listen hereā¦ā He was immortal. There was no way I could kill him, but gods can be wounded.ā -Last Olympian
āHow was he keeping his cool? The way he talked to Bob left Annabeth awestruck⦠and maybe a little uneasy, too. If Percy had been serious about leaving the choice to Bob, then she didnāt like how much he trusted the Titan. If heād been manipulating Bob into making that choice⦠well, then, Annabeth was stunned that Percy could be so calculating.ā -House of Hades. Is she seriously kidding me with this though because how could she be stunned by that⦠which brings me to the next pointā¦.
Percy is incredibly manipulative, extremely clever, and very resourceful.
Canon doesnāt even represent this well, because it says stuff likeĀ ātrickery and evasion were Annabethās tactics,ā but Percy uses them constantly.
Most of the time when Percy does something āstupidā or āimpulsiveā itās actually neither of those things, itās just that he doesnāt take the time to explain things to everyone else. He has multilayered plans for how heās going to get out of a situation, but other characters (and fandom) seem to attribute this to luck.
If Percyās plans were genuinely stupid and impulsive there is no way he would still be alive. Just think about this realistically, okay. He doesnāt get lucky, he just knows what heās doing.
Percy has a functioning knowledge of Greek mythology that he uses to his advantage constantly, and actually, he directly explains most myths to the reader. For some reason (?) most of fandom thinks heās clueless. (just kidding, I know why, and @ehlihr explains it here)
Possibly the best example is Procrustes, who, at the age of twelve, Percy successfully swindled into laying down on his own torture device.
Gets into the Underworld on pure manipulation. Bribes Charon with Italian suits and a pay raise. Bribes Cerberus with a toy. Remember that scene where he dramatically stacks drachmas on top of each other right under Charonās nose? Yeah. This kid could talk his way out of a paper bag, mark my words.
Lies on national television convincingly enough that the reporters take up a collection to buy them plane tickets to New York at the end of the Lightning Thief. And also gives the phone number to Gabeās store and tells everyone to ask for free appliances.
Figures out Kronosā plot entirely by himself, which is quite complicated, then breaks it down for the reader, Annabeth, and Grover. I bet you didnāt even realize that the reason the plot of the Lightning Thief wasnāt hopelessly confusing was because Percy explained it to you.
Percy is the first person to realize that Kronos is waking (aside from Kronosā forces, of course). He predicts that heās going to gain a solid form again. He and Annabeth simultaneously reach this conclusion around the same time without discussing it with each other, but Annabeth doesnāt anticipate the gravity of the war the way Percy doesĀ (and the gods wonāt listen to him until literally the end of Titanās Curse).
In the Sea of Monsters, he guides one of the cannibals into breaking down the locker room door by standing in front of it and dodging out of the way at the last minute, because he needs to get his sword from the locker room.
Withholds the Gray Sisterās eye until they explain āthe location he seeksā and even rolls down the window and threatens to throw it into traffic.
That glorious scene where he manipulates Luke into giving himself away by IMāing Mr. D behind Lukeās back. Possibly my favorite Luke and Percy moment ever.
He also challenges Luke to a fight at the end of Sea of Monsters because he needs a way to buy time so that Clarisse can get the Fleece to Camp Half-Blood, and it works, because he backs Luke into a corner where heāll look weak if he turns down the fight.
Literally sneaks onto a quest. A quest which Zoe Nightshade, a Hunter and tracker, was on, and she didnāt even realize he was there until he literally ran up to her and showed himself.
Kills the Nemean Lion by throwing astronaut food from the gift shop in its mouth.
Percy is the one who figures out that Talos has a maintenance hatch that a person could fit inside. Otherwise they would have literally all died.
Convinces Nereus to jump into the water by feigning that heās afraid of going in water, and then uses his increased strength to tackle him.
Cleans Geryonās stables with a petrified sea shell.
Figures out how to navigate the Labyrinth.
And one of the greatest fight scenes in all the books (I think so, any way): jumps off Antaeusā face and grabs the chains of skulls hanging from the arena ceiling, ties them in a knot, hooks Antaeus by his loincloth and suspends him above the ground by a chain of skulls, and then kills him. Can you imagine him crawling through the chains, ālike some kind of deranged monkey.ā Like thatās dark, but itās also insanely resourceful and clever holy shit.
Percy made a bargain with Gaea using his own place in her creepy ass plan and in the prophecy to manipulate her into saving his life.
Gets the gryphons to stop attacking in Son of Neptune by threatening to stab their eggs.
Herds Polybotes over the boundary line so that Terminus will get angry and attack.
And, of course, the entire scene with Chrysaor is brilliant (and like the most in character moment for percy in all of hoo lmao).
Percy tries so hard to be a good person and he has such a good heart.
Remember after he saves Clarisseās butt in Sea of Monsters, and once they make it back to land, he feels bad about stealing her quest and making her look bad, and doesnāt want her to get into trouble with Ares, so he sends her home with the Fleece alone? Tyson even says: āPercy is niceā and Annabeth says āPercy is too nice.ā And then he never tells anybody about how she totally would have died if not for him and Annabeth because he doesnāt want to humiliate her?
And in the Demigod Files, when he encounters Phobos and Deimos with Clarisse and agrees again to keep quiet about it because he doesnāt want to humiliate her?
Percy searches for Nico all throughout Battle of The Labyrinth and never stops looking out for him, even when Nico curses him and wishes he was dead and repeatedly screws him over.
He forgives people? Like I know heās vengeful and I know itās hard to regain his trust, but he does forgive.Ā He doesnāt even think twice about forgiving any of the demigods who fought with Kronos because he understands where theyāre coming from and recognizes that theyāre just kids. He honors Luke and Ethanās dying requests despite the fact that they both tried to kill him about seven hundred times. He mourns them: āāThey were brainwashed!ā I said. āNow theyāre dead and Kronos is still alive. Thatās supposed to make me feel better?āā -The Last Olympian. And he completely and immediately backs Clarisse up in saying that Silena was a hero, and refuses to tell anyone that she was a spy. He also forgives Nico who, letās be honest, is such a little shitĀ in Battle of the Labyrinth.
Every time he realizes that heās done something wrong he immediately pulls back and modifies his behavior.
Remember the confrontation with the river nymph before cleaning the stables? āShe probably thought I was going to fight her for control of the river, and she was worried she would lose. The thought made me sad. I felt like a bully, a son of Poseidon throwing his weight around.ā -Battle of the Labyrinth.
Percy befriends Grover, who is scrawny and gets bullied, and spends all year trying to defend him from the bullies? He even says that heās lost sleep thinking about how Grover will survive school without him when he gets expelled from Yancy? Literally the reason the confrontation with Ms. Dodds even happens is because Percy was defending Grover.
Percy befriends Tyson, who, as far as he knows, is a homeless teenager with special needs who lives in a cardboard box and smells funny and cries a lot. He meets Tyson at the subway every morning so that Tyson wonāt get overwhelmed being by himself. He stands guard outside Tysonās stall so that Tyson can change in privacy. Like, Percy is so good to Tyson it breaks my heart? And he had no angle at all, he just genuinely likes Tyson and sees him as a friend. And he literally makes himself a social outcast by association; Matt Sloan even tells him,Ā āYou might have friends if you werenāt always sticking up for that freak.ā And Percy says,Ā āI was pretty much his only friend, which meant he was pretty much my only friend.ā
Heās captain of the other dodgeball team against Matt Sloan because all the other kids who get picked on look to him for protection.
His life is terrible and nothing ever works out the way he wants it to, but instead of being a whiny pissbaby about itĀ he just fuckingā¦. he just fucking keeps saving the world? He just keeps putting himself back in mortal danger despite hating it more and more each time because⦠because itās what he has to do? He doesnāt take it out on anyone? He just fucking keeps accepting it? And he gets bitter and jaded, but he never stops saving the world.
He literally finds out in Last Olympian that the entire prophecy, this whole time, they were all waiting for his death? Like he was a ticking timebomb, raising him to be slaughtered and lying about it? AND HE NEVER EVEN GETS BITTER? HE DOESNāT TRY TO RUN AWAY OR BLAME ANYONE? hE JUST FUCKING? DOES WHAT HE HAS TO DO?
(wouldnāt you be angry about that? even annabeth lied about it to his face for years? wouldnāt that feel like a slap to the face? because iām pretty sure if the girl i loved did that to me i wouldnāt be able to accept it and would never look at her the same way? but maybe thatās just me?)
He snaps into Leader Mode in Last Olympian so quickly itās amazing. That character development is just⦠gah, itās so good. People start depending on him without question and nobody even blinks when Chiron addresses him as the leader of the group, because itās just natural for them to follow him.
This piece by @llttledipper is gorgeous and covers a lot so Iām not even sure which heading to stick it under, but itās worth the read.
Percy is really compassionate and a caretaker.
Running with everything mentioned above, of course.
Checks in on Annabeth and makes sure sheās sleeping and eating.
Comforts Annabeth a lot during the pjo series because like⦠for the brunt of it, heās really all she has left, especially in Sea of Monsters.
Heās always very cautious about discussing Luke with her because he doesnāt want to upset her (but letās be honest: he was right and she was wrong about Luke. She was pretty delusional for most of the series and it actually got worse as she got older).
Percy only really yells at AnnabethĀ once. Which is pretty big of him, considering she yells at him practically once a chapter.
Apologizes to Reyna for something he doesnāt even remember. His exact words are,Ā āIf I hurt you, Iām sorry.ā
He wants to help Reyna so badly in Son of Neptune because he feels for her. Once, he even opts to leave her alone, because he recognizes that sheās having a hard time projecting the image of a leader and needs some time to herself.
He goes on the quest in Son of Neptune because he knows Frank is scared and needs help, even though he wants to stay put.
The way he treats Hazel and Frank all throughout Son of Neptune is so sweetĀ and brotherly. Especially the scene when he and Hazel are talking alone in her old house is so sweet, when he tells her that sheās definitely going to make it out alive, and the scene when he encourages Frank after killing the basilisks.
Heās constantly encouraging people to chase their dreams, like his motherās dream to be a writer and Annabethās dream to be an architect and Groverās dream to find Pan.
He wants to help Nico so badly, and heās a total mother hen.
He even takes care of the readers by editing scary and disturbing stuff out! I mean, I know itās because itās a kid series and itās convenient to water it down by having Percy edit stuff out, butĀ narration is important to pay attention to, because Percy is talking directly to the reader, which is the easiest and most obvious way to develop a character. The warning in the beginning has a veryĀ āplease save yourselfā kind of vibe. He admits more than once that heās not describing something because itās disturbing: the fresh skulls in Antaeusā arena, the tortures in the Fields of Punishment, etc.
And, like I said before, really has empathy for Kronosā kids and genuinely wants to save them from themselves.
Annabethās quote in Mark of Athena,Ā āPercy has a knack for making good friendsā is so unbelievably accurate (like 10/10 on that one Annabeth because you definitely get some other stuff pretty wrong lol.)
Percy is actually quite intuitive.
His dreams are the most prophetic of all the demigods that weāve seen.
Knows Luke is bad news right of the bat, but fights it, because he doesnāt understand why. (the foreshadowing is so BLATANT itās embarrassing to reread)
Immediately mistrustful of the gods, for good reason.
Immediately trustful of a lot of good people, like Grover and Chiron and Hazel and Frank and Tyson, even if he canāt always explain why.
If Percy doesnāt realize people like him, itās because he canāt imagine why, not because heās unable to pick up on the signs.
I donāt know where the idea came from that Percy was clueless that Annabeh liked him? Because he absolutely was not? He knew all through the end of Battle of the Labyrinth and all through Last Olympian, itās just that it wasnāt that simple. They had a lot to work through before they could throw romance into the mix (and I do mean a lot).
Heās also not oblivious that Annabeth is jealous of Rachel, itās just that heās mad about it because he thinks that she doesnāt have any right to be.
Heās not oblivious that Rachel likes him, either, itās just that heās not sure how he feels about it so consciously tries to avoid talking about it.
And as far as Nico goes, I mean, the majority of fandom was also oblivious about Nicoās crush and called it āTHE SICKEST PLOT TWIST EVERā so what makes yāall think youāve got any room to talk
As for Calypso, when she admits that she loves him, he literally says,Ā āButā¦Iām justā¦I mean, Iām just me,ā so I think that about proves my point.
Percy is angry.
Heās meant to directly parallel Luke, and thatās made pretty damn obvious by the end of pjo. And if it wasnāt, PercyĀ directly comparesĀ himself to Luke later on:
āPercy remembered what Luke Castellan had told him years ago, when Percy had come back from his very first quest:Ā Didnāt you realize how useless it all is? All the heroicsābeing pawns of the Olympians?Ā Percy was almost the same age now as Luke had been then. He could understand how Luke became so spiteful. In the past five years, Percy had been used as a pawn too many times. The Olympians seemed to take turns using him for their schemes. Maybe the gods were better than the Titans, or Gaea, but that didnāt make them good or wise. It didnāt make Percy like this stupid battle arena.ā -Mark of Athena
His anger motivates him most of the time. Percyās knee jerk response to all of the trauma that heās been through is to get angry (probably because it keeps him going).
Percy constantly talks about feeling angry, far more often than feeling sad or scared. This is so common that I couldnāt even cite one example, because itās just a theme through all the books. When he gets angry, he kills stuff (like the Minotaur, twice).
It really comes to a head in the scene with Akhlys, but again, goes totally unresolved because that kind of anger doesnāt just fucking evaporate (it also gets partially replaced with guilt, which is just. so unhealthy).
@lililibird, @ofswordsandpens and @accioangelo wrote something really cool about that here
Percy is definitely mentally ill.
Like yeah, heās neurodiverse, but heās also canonically mentally ill. Iām not sure what type of mental illness it would best fit, or maybe more than one, but thereās absolutely no way this kid is mentally healthy.
Heās suicidal.
He has insurmountable guilt.
Heās afraid of himself.
He hates himself.
Heās angry.
He develops a phobia of his own element and never⦠never resolves it? He talks about feeling āuncleanā after Phorcys aquarium and Annabeth notes how shaken up he looks, even the next day. He almost drowns two more times since itās brought up (Nyphaeum-whatever-itās-called and the Cocytus-however-you-spell-it) which means it probably got worse so Iām just gonna assume that he has a paralyzing fear of his own element? he also joined the swimteam which is literally like WHAT HOW WHY but iām trying not to turn this into a wankfest
And in that same vein, this fear of suffocation, like youāre a fraud and donāt deserve the people who love you or the recognition you get? Thatās super unhealthy. Itās important to accept peopleās love, but he hates himself so much that he canāt see that.
He has frequent nightmares. Like, not the weird voodoo demigod nightmares, like night terrors. Nightmares that donāt have dream messages attached to them, just straight up nightmares. Heās constantly saying stuff likeĀ āI still had nightmares about it.ā He mentions losing sleep because of it. The night when Bianca sends him the IM of Nico in the graveyard, he sits on the floor staring at the remains of the shattered water fountain all nightĀ and doesnāt move until Tyson gets him in the morning. Like, heās really affected by the things that heās seen. Also heās been having nightmares about Tartarus since the Lightning Thief so I can only imagine how hard itās going to be for him to recover from actually being there (theyāre actually quite vivid: one time, he has a conversation with Kronos on the edge of the pit of Chaos).
āHe glared at the poison flood encroaching from all sides. He concentrated so hard that something inside him cracked ā as if a crystal ball had shattered in his stomach.ā -House of Hades. He actually shattered a part of himself to be able to unlock that kind of power. And after Akhlys leaves he mentions it kinda starts to subside, but listen: broken glass doesnāt get fixed. He literally is admitting that heās broken inside. Not to mention that this kind of misery doesnāt just come from no where; this is the combined effort of all the terrible things heās been feeling his whole life. Thatās pretty horrifying, and someone should help him through that instead of making him feel like a monster for doing it.Ā itās actually almost identical to nicoās dilemma except that people actually try to help nico.
Suicidal thoughts, pervasive guilt, self-hatred, self-blame, self-distrust, frequent nightmares, developing a phobia, using anger as a coping mechanism. This sounds like depression to me (how I experience it, at any rate), possibly with symptoms of PTSD, although Iām not a psychiatrist. Even if it doesnāt fit a specific mental illness itās still a deeply unhealthy mental state to be in.Ā
Like listen: Percy needs help.
Percyās fatal flaw is so not a big deal.
Leaves his mother in the Underworld at the age of twelve. His mom. His mom, guys. Is there anyone he loves more on this earth, besides Annabeth? Heās twelve years old, and he comes to the understanding that he needs to let her go, leave her in mortal danger, because the fate of the world depends on him getting the bolt to Zeus, and, furthermore, that his mother would never accept his life in exchange for her own.
I mean, thatās really case closed right there, but thereās quite a bit more.
āI was leaving her in good hands after all. Her own.ā -Lightning Thief. This is right after his mother tells him āyou need to let me take care of myself.ā And he respects that so much that he actually leaves her with her abuser, which is really hard for him because he canāt bear to leave her in danger, but then he realizes that sheās capable of dealing with it and, more importantly, he lets her.
Encourages Grover to go off on an extremely dangerous solo quest to find Pan which no satyr has ever returned alive from, because he realizes that itās really important to Grover and doesnāt want to hold him back due to his own fears.
Encourages Tyson to go join Poseidonās forges because he recognizes that while he would like Tyson to stay, this is really important to Tyson.
Even in Titanās Curse he wants to immediately throw himself off the cliff searching for Annabeth and he doesnāt because thatās dumb and he understands that. And then he goes on the quest but itās like⦠everyone on that quest was looking for someone they loved so itās really not a good example of Percyās fatal flaw in action. Additionally, when Percy captures Nereus, his first instinct is to ask about Annabeth, but he doesnāt, because again: itās not the best choice, and he understands that, so he asks about the monster Artemis was tracking instead.
Splits up with Grover and Tyson in the Labyrinth because he knows that Grover needs to find Pan and itās really important to him. Annabeth is the one who keeps saying that splitting up is a bad idea because itās not safe.
His first instinct is always to take care of people but he never infringes on their rights to make their own choices, even when he doesnāt agree with them. He never holds anyone back from reaching their full potential and usually encourages them to go for it, even if it means they have to leave him behind.
It was really fucking hard for him to let Annabeth go searching for the Mark of Athena but he did it. He even recognizes that sheās terrified and doesnāt want to do it and she needs him to believe in her and so he fucking sends her off because he never wants to hold her back from doing all the amazing things that she can do. Iām crying.
@greenconverses explains this a little more in depthĀ here
Percyās never jeopardized⦠anything? because of his fatal flaw? And itās just kind of like⦠for something that is discussed so often itās really kind of⦠not important?
Most important of all: he lets Beckendorf die. He looks into his eyes, Beckendorf tells him to go, he protests, but Beckendorf doesnāt waver. And Percy lets it happen, because it needs to happen.
I mean. Like. COME ON.
Now, I mean, if he understands that Beckendorfās death is inevitable (mind you, Beckendorf was one of Percyās closest friends), and he understands that itās illogical to rescue his mother from the Underworld,Ā then I think itās safe to say that Percy understands and controls his fatal flaw. You could make the argument that maybe he wouldnāt if it was Annabeth. In which case, I say to you, thatās really not about fatal flaw, itās just about human beings.
Annabeth takes a knife for Percy, which makes it pretty damn obvious that sheās willing to die for him? Beckendorf, Silena, Thalia, and Leo actually do die for their friends? Like, a willingness to die in place of their friends is something we see in every single main character in this series, and most of the minor characters too.
The only moment you really see it get him in danger is Tartarus and Mt. St. Helens, but listen, is there any other member of the Seven that would have let go of Annabethās hand like be serious. Can you honestly believe any of them would have let her fall alone and pulled themselves out of the pit like thereās just no fucking way that would have happened. Frankly, how much would you have to hate someone to let them get dragged to hell to die alone.
As for Mt. St. Helens, I mean, honestly? This scene could have gone the other way around just as easily. In fact, Percy actually stood a chance and Annabeth didnāt, so it makes a lot of fucking sense that he should be the one to stay behind.
It doesnāt take away from anything Percyās done for his friends. In fact, it kinda makes it better because itās not overshadowed by the lurking threat of the Elusive Fatal Flaw.
Iām not saying itās not actually his fatal flaw, except thatā¦.. well, itās not, really, is it? Heās got a good handle on it, which pretty much tells me that itās not going to kill him any time soon, and more than that, itās not unique to Percy. Who doesnāt struggle with wanting to protect the people they love?
Maybe letās talk about Percyās rage instead because that is something that actually comes up very often and usually gets the better of him.
Percy is incredibly capable and really powerful.
and all yāall are definitely goingĀ ālol like we didnāt know thatā but listen: no, iām not sure that you did. and if you did then imma talk about it anyway because we donāt talk about it enough.
Percy spends just as much time saving Annabethās ass as she does his. Itās mutual. Their relationship is very balanced and I think itās cheap and stupid to try and make her look better by belittling him. Oddly, this tactic is used by a lot of characters in the series?Ā āI doubt Percy could find his way out of a paper bag without Annabethā like okay how about the part where she would have dove straight off a cliff in the house of night like lmao where the fuck does this argument come from.
Firstly, I must say that WE DO NOT TALK ABOUT THE CURSE OF ACHILLES ENOUGH but I could rant about it for literal hours, so Iāll just link you to where I did that already.
KILLS THE MINOTAUR AT THE AGE OF TWELVE BY RIPPING ITS OWN HORN OUT OF ITS SKULL AND STABBING HIM WITH IT. like. The Minotaur. THE MINOTAUR. Dāyou know that in the myths, the Minotaur just fucking ripped up entire towns and cities and killed hundreds of people and nobody could stop it, until finally they built the fucking Labyrinth to lock it up because nobody knew what to do with it, and then it was still alive for years because nobody could kill it, and like, the culmination of Theseusā entire hero career was killing this thing because thatās how fucking intense the Minotaur was. AND THEN PERCY JACKSON. TWELVE YEARS OLD. NOT A DAY OF TRAINING. NO WEAPON. JUST FUCKING. TAKES HIM DOWN. WHAT THE FUCK.
Kronos tells him that Luke is afraid of him.
Kronos also tells him that he wishes Percy had supplied his host body. Kronos is surveying bodies to possess and is like,Ā āI want that one.ā THE FUCK.
Jumps like, 120 yards off the House of Night and over the river Acheron????? With a person on his back?????? HOw????????? SINCE WHEN CAN HE FUCKING DO THAT???? (i will become FILLED WITH RAGE if anyone answers this with āheās got skillzā)
Remember when he tells the Roman Senate that he fought Kronos himself and Reyna stumbles back in shock and is like???? how????
Kills a giant alone. Like, completely alone, except for Terminus who really doesnāt do anything, itās just about the logistical need to have a god kill a giant.
Blows up a volcano and wakes Typhon. Like, wakes Typhon. And it wasnāt even on purpose! He was just being tortured and needed a way to escape like it was on pure instinct. And then when Hephaestus tells him so, heās literally like, āIām not that powerful.ā And Hephaestus just kinda laughs like UM YEAH YOU KIND OF ARE, LOOK AT WHAT YOU FUCKING DID, SON OF THE EARTHSHAKER INDEED.
Wipes out Hades entire army like, basically without even realizing it.
Literally holds back Kronosā entire army by himself. LIke, ALONE. A WHOLE ARMY.
āPart of their problem was Percy. He fought like a demon, whirling through the defendersā ranks in a completely unorthodox style, rolling under their feet, slashing with his sword instead of stabbing like a Roman would, whacking campers with the flat of his blade, and generally causing mass panic.ā -Son of Neptune. I love to think about this scene (these are the scenes that we need movies for, okay, think of how great this could be)
Kills the Clazmonian sow alone.
Holds off a drakon alone, although Clarisse is the one that kills it.
At the age of thirteen, he totally beats up Polyphemus, who is at least two times his size, just because he gets angry.
The first time he summons a hurricane he doesnāt even do it on purpose it just fucking happens instinctively. Groverās like ābro what are you doingā and heās like āwhat.ā LIKE PERCY. SERIOUSLY.
He blows stuff up when he gets angry??? Like the plumbing incident in boo? Thatās fucking intense okay like wow just one more reason for him to be afraid of himself
I saved this for last because this is my favorite: CONTROLS POISON. AND ALSO BODILY FLUIDS. I think we talk about the poison scene a lot but do you remember the part when Akhlys starts crying and heās like āOh, good, more water.ā āOH GOOD MORE WATERā LIKE JESUS PERCY. And then he imagines her nose and throat filling with her own tears like HOLY SHIT. thatās some bloodbending level shit right there.
Please tell me I was not the only person cheering during that scene okay because I was like THIS IS IT, HEāS FINALLY SNAPPED, LETāS GO MOTHERFUCKERS, like I have been waiting and waiting and hoping and hoping for a scene like that for years.Ā but annabeth ruined it because she clearly underestimated him like the signs were all there she should not have been surprised
Percy is not a lovable idiot.
Like, I mean, heās just not. Heās a hugely complex character with a lot of conflicting traits. Heās vengeful but caring, loyal but resentful, capable but insecure, a natural leader but intimidating and sometimes even scary.
Like yeah, heās got a sense of humor, but like???? That doesnāt cancel out any of the things I mentioned above.
Percy is also not an asshole.
In an attempt to get away from the ālovable idiotā fanon characterization, I think the pendulum swung too far the other way.
Percy is very compassionate, and very caring. He apologizes for his mistakes. Heās not cocky or arrogant in the slightest.
Yes, he can be intimidating and vengeful and once you break his trust you better look out, but that doesnāt cancel out his instinct to take care of people and his efforts to help people and his desire to be a good person.

I feel like not a lot of people draw Percy as a skater boy and I'm upset about that actually there needs to be more skater boy Percy fanart or content in general

it's interesting that the whole "____ was just a teenage girl" who was "rightfully crashing out" line of thinking is so prevalent in some of the current pjo discourse, but people will get genuinely mad at you when you point out that, well -- percy was also just a teenager who watched his friend die a couple hours ago and then learned about (what was thought to be) his own impending death soon after. this isn't even the first time where, in a percy vs other character dispute, the other party in question gets the luxury of the "they're just a child" defense. so was percy. why was it okay for every other character in the books to crash out (especially when percy was the target of their ire), but he was painted as the bad guy by the narrative for not being perfectly selfless and forbearant at all times? why did he always have to be the adult in the room and take responsibility for other people and their feelings? why was everyone else, during their lowest moments, given grace for being a child, for being traumatized, for whatever, but never percy himself? like actually let's talk about it.

Do you think Jason and Percy's "friendship", which everyone portrays in the fandom, is overrated? Frank seems TO BE LITERALLY PRESENT HERE! And, I admit, is Jason not exactly the character that hooked me? That is, from the "lost" trio (Piper, Leo and Jason) No one got me hooked. I didn't give a damn about them, and now I don't care about them. But Frank and Percy's friendship is in the book son of Neptune.š . I would like to ask you about this
I will be the first one to admit that out of all the glaring problems of HoO, the most overlooked one is that there's no proper exploration of interpersonal relationships between all the characters especially when it comes to Percy. But I swear, soN relationships were done so well. The trio of Hazel, Frank, and Percy is absolutely phenomenal. (Hot take: I like this trio more than I like Percy, Grover, and Annabeth's og trio. Go figure). Anyways, let's do this one by one. [This is going to be long cause let's admit it the entirety of SoN is just Percy, Frank and Hazel bonding and it's the best thing Rick has ever written]
Only Frank and Hazel are ever stated to be his best/good friends, and they openly interact that way throughout the books. It's the only consistent thing in all or HoO. The fact that Percy and Frank's Riordan wiki has them both in each other's family sections and labeled brotherly is one of only redeeming things about the wiki.
Up until House of Hades, Percy's interactions with Leo are practically nil, nor does he have many opinions on Leo other than the fact that he makes good inventions. Then post HoH, there's this ridiculous conflict shoved between them over Calypso that is so absurd I won't waste my breath talking about it. Leo didn't much appeal to me either because of some of his obnoxious behavior and the way he treated Frank just pissed me off. And then him blaming Percy for the Calypso thing was just the final straw. The only thing I like about Leo is his genius and loge for inventions.
The same goes for Percy and Piper. Percy practically has no opinion on her aside from the fact that she is an ally of his. Piper, on the contrary, has MANY opinions on Percy, most of them wrong. Especially the part where she says Percy needs to be leashed and Annabeth's the one to do it and Annabeth just fucking agrees? But never mind, let's move on. My thoughts on Piper are complicated and she is one of the characters I can say I actively disliked. But that could be a whole separate post.
Then there's Percy and Jason. They are paralleled a lot, but their differences are quite prominent as well. There's a two-way insecurity/envy there, and it is never properly resolved. Percy has decent information about Jason's past. Jason has little to no information on Percy's past, just like everyone else. Aside from that moment underwater in BoO there's little positive interaction between Jason and Percy; their one or two prior conversations are either neutral or combative due to them being pit against each other either by the narrative or their own conflicting opinions. But their relationship has the most potential; Jason I do like a lot and the things he could have been. He and Percy could have been very good friends if they had shown any such inclinations but the way Jason was left un-nuanced in terms of his buildup and depth at times and their relationship being left underdeveloped and raw really got in the way of any developments. But the fandom's reason for hyping them likely has to do with the unexplored depths of their paralles and their contrast in choices, motivations and end results of their struggle. That and they are a recently popular ship so their's your answer for the hype.
So, to sum it up, Percy considers the lost trio to be allies/friends at best or, at worst, he has no much opinion of them. But there's more of a link between Percy and Jason than there's between Percy and the other two members of the Lost Trio. Which is that Jason is Thalia's brother. Thalia is one of Percy's close friends and his cousin and Jason is HER younger brother which makes Percy slightly more inclined to think of Jason as a closer friend than the other two, not necessarily because of his own relationship with Jason but because of who he means to Thalia. Percy "fatal flaw loyalty" Jackson taking it up on himself to keep Thalia's brother safe is something extremely plausible and very in character for him despite barely knowing Jason.
Now to the main point: I love love Percy and Frank's relationship. Like they are so fucking iconic as best friends and no one even talks about it. And I have been wanting to make a post on this for ages. Thanks for giving me the extra push for it, Anon.
The way Frank and Percy meet and just immediately have each other's back; chefs kiss. To me Frank and Hazel are the two people who immediately return Percy's loyalty while Percy's first meeting with anyone else is always about them being suspicious of Percy. Percy saves both Frank and Hazel from the monsters soon after their introduction. Frank is absolutely in awe of Percy and grateful to him for saving his life. For the first time ever, Percy's good act is instantly rewarded when Frank offers to vouch for Percy in Camp Jupiter before Reyna cuts him down. Percy, despite learning of Frank's low rank and not so good reputation, is completely unbothered and fully supportive of Frank.
1]Now, if you remember, Frank takes the vials of gorgon's blood that technically are Percy's by right because Frank thinks one of them might help with his curse. He is so guilty about it from the start. He doesn't think Percy noticed that he took them, but obviously Percy did, and he later brings it up with Frank not to criticize him but to ask him to keep it safe for him. Frank is so completely moved. Because he believes no Roman given the chance to have these vials for themselves would give it up and especially with Percy's mind and memories being in the state that they are, he definitely needs them more and yet he willingly gives those up.
I just love that interaction. Cause for once, someone doesn't think the worst of Frank or look down on him, despite how powerful Percy is. In fact, Percy even actively believes Frank did it to protect Percy, showing Frank that he thinks the best of him. Frank is so extremely guilty, and he immediately makes sure that he won't use the vials for himself or for anything else until he has Percy's say-so.
2]Just before that interaction is the one where Frank confides in Percy about his mother. His first instinct is to lie, but then he looks at Percy and is unable to [its practically canon that people just divulge their secrets and innermost insecurities when Percy is looking at them and it's the absolute funniest thing everytime.] He tells Percy the truth of what happened to his mother Emily and how she died in the war. And is immediately relieved cause Percy doesn't offer any platitudes or words of consolation. He just listens and nods, and knowing Frank doesn't want to linger on the subject, he immediately changes it.
3]Frank is the one to base their whole plan on Percy. When even Percy, because of his memory loss, isn't sure he could control the cannon, Frank believes in him, and Percy immediately backs up Frank. And when Percy does succeed in exploding the cannons and Frank looks at him to lead, Percy immediately tells Frank that it was his plan and that he should be leading the attack and gives Frank all the credit. The trust these two have in each other is insane. To have a friendship like these two.
4]Later on, when Mars arrives, everyone but Percy kneels and only and only when Frank asks him to kneel does Percy kneel. The whole segment of Mars talking and Percy being snippy and Frank's entire inner monologue about not wanting Mars to kill Percy and being so fucking worried about Percy and confused as to why Mars isn't immediately furious was just so hilarious.
And the way Frank just asks Percy if Riptide can do a grenade form after he sees Mars turn his grenade into a ball point pen and Percy is just so fucking offended and asks Frank to shut up has to be one of the funniest interactions in the book. Like look at this; Frank is so hopeful and Percy is so insulted that he would have anything in common with Mars. I don't know why but I absolutely love this interaction.

5]Percy doesn't want to go on the quest, but he doesn't want to leave Frank and Hazel alone, so he tags along immediately. Not because Mars asked but for Frank. Despite receiving the message in his dreams about Annabeth asking him to stay put, he immediately prioritizes his their safety over his own reunion and memory recollection and if that isn't Percy being Percy then I don't know what is.
The way all three of the SoN trio just completely hit it off almost immediately and the way they mesh together so well for such a treat to read. The whole book is just all of them being iconic individually and then as a trio. The best book in HoO by a landslide no questions asked. Some parts of HoH come close but overall it's the best book, in terms of writing as well as character consistency.
6]The way Percy hates Spartus monsters, but when Frank is the one controlling them, he is okay with them after one assurance from Frank. Percy is also completely amazed when it beats the Laistrogonyans. My point being that even before Frank got his gift, Percy completely respected him and his judgement and was completely supportive of Frank's plans and his leadership.
There are so many subtle as well as obvious signs. Percy being proud of Frank for making centurion, worrying if Frank got hurt when he got his mural, being concerned for Frank's grandmother and consistently bolstering Frank's self-confidence. He makes sure Frank understands how much he and Hazel need Frank and appreciate his leadership. And the way Percy is so proud of being related to Frank.
"You singlehandedly took out three basilisks while I was sipping green tea and wheat germ. You held off an army of Laistrygonians so that our plane could take off in Vancouver. You saved my life by shooting down that gryphon. And you gave up the last charge on your magic spear to help some defenseless mortals. You are, hands down, the nicest child of the war god I've ever met⦠Maybe the only nice one."
-Percy to Frank, SoN, pg.348
Coming from Percy who hates war gods especially Ares/Mars enough for it to overpower Hera's memory curse, this is extremely high praise. The way Percy is absolutely ready to throw hands with death to protect Hazel and Frank is just so important to me.
Frank being absolutely in awe of Percy, and having full faith in Percy's power even when Percy doesn't have it and Percy mirroring this behavior back is my Roman Empire. They are both the most suicidal characters in the book. I don't think we talk about how often Frank thought of dying and Percy is almost always suicidal (since 12 years old) but the way they both make sure the other won't die on their watch...it's the best written relationship in the entirety of HoO and you won't tell me otherwise.
The way Frank and Hazel both look up to Percy, how Frank was absolutely against Percy gambling is life and the fact that he is so proud of Percy that Frank points out the way Percy beat his father Mars to Mar's face with just so much sass is like the only proof you need. My guy was ready to back Percy till the end no matter what.
7]Obviously there's a reason why only Hazel and Percy know about Frank's curse initially and the fact that Frank trusts Percy so naturally and explicitly. Percy asks him to turn into a dolphin for the sake of his plan? Frank turns into a dolphin, no hesitation. Frank looking to Percy for silent acknowledgement whenever he tries something new with his powers and the fact that we know Frank wants to make Percy proud is just so fucking gut wrenching. These two are absolutely the inseparable best friends and I will forever hate Rick for not doing them justice.
8]Frank has seen Percy at his low when he is panicking and suffocating in the aquarium when they are captured and how he immediately does what he can to comfort Percy. He doesn't judge Percy for being so shaken by the whole situation, he completely understands and is so fully on Percy's side. The whole of SoN at times Frank was the one more fixated on returning Percy's memories than Percy was. The absolute devastated state that Hazel and Frank are in after Percy falls into Tartarus and Frank focusing on what Percy would want them to do. No one is doing it like them in the whole pjo series.
9]Also the whole Percy being slightly jealous and so in awe of Frank's ability and Frank just gaping at him cause to him, his gift is nothing compared to Percy's and that whole conversation is so hilarious. Percy calling Frank beast yet again but this time to tease him about how on the nose he was and Frank being flattered and embarrassed and immediately shutting it down gives me life. It's one of my favorite interactions ever.
All in all, Frank and Percy have similar issues and the way they mirror each other's positive and encouraging behavior to dispel each other's insecurities and the innate protectiveness for each other and the fact that they are both so proud they are related. The peak of brotherhood. The best friendship in the pjoverse to me. You cannot get better than this. Not to mention they both care so much for Hazel and are so protective of her and the way Hazel looks upto Percy always and relies on Frank for support. The best trio that ever trioed (could only be beaten by Lockwood, George and Lucy from Lockwood and Co.). There's not enough acknowledgement for these guys and the fandom really is missing out on the awesomeness of Frank Zhang.
I hate Rick for butchering Frank's character development in HoH that way. Frank so absolutely deserved to be Praetor but it should have been on his own merit, not because the blessing of Mars changed him the way it did. It's shit writing and just an awful message to give in general. The way Rick is fucked up all these golden opportunities and character potentials. To me everything after HoH is mostly non-canon anyway.

reminder that if you back tsuna into a corner he
A) sends you right back into the worst prison for mafia criminals you just escaped from, but even worse than before (enjoy being unconscious and tied up in your one room swimming pool for the next 10 years)
B) freezes you with flames burning so hot they turned into ice (< this isn't how the zero point breakthrough is explained in canon but it's the more dramatic explanation), fully knowing you were already frozen by similar ones for 8 years until, like, a month prior
C) burns you fucking alive and also undoes the last 10 years of your existence across all existing timelines. also he won't think anything about it afterwards ever (?????? like. it's not that he didn't deserve it, to be clear, but damn. ššš middle schoolers when you just want to take over the world(s) for a bit, smdh š)
D) is willing to become the boss of the most powerful mafia family in the world with a bloodstained history if it means getting the opportunity to get his hands on you and kill you beat the shit out of you. but you're lucky he likes you so you could stay on very thin ice long enough for both of you to clear things up
E) gangs up against you with all the current and future strongest people in the world, and then punches you so hard he makes you see the light of doing the right thing despite your centuries years old deep rooted hatred which singlehandedly kept you alive as an undead person
also reminder he did all that while he was only 14 years old. this is all things he did in less than a year.
this is tsuna's resume during the course of less than a year of proper mafia business.
so, you know. the next time he goes "i just want my friends and i to be safe and happy and live in peace. š„ŗš„ŗš„ŗ please don't make me fight you to make it happen? šš½šš½š„ŗšš½šš½š„ŗšš½šš½š„ŗ"
just maybe, consider listening to him

people in universe would have common misconception about both Giotto and Tsuna being super honorable in a fight etc etc
No
Theyāre mean and they play dirty if they donāt like you, but ESPECIALLY Tsuna.
Never gonna forget that Tsuna pretended he was gonna poke Iemitsuās eyes out only to blast him right in the face with an x burner when his wrist was caught and even reborn was like ālol nice get his assā
Then there was also him just straight up snapping Mukuroās trident in two bc he got pissed off
Ripping Byakuranās wings off⦠Burning them to cinders right in front of his face while he was in agony because uh hello thatās part of his body youāre fucking CRAZY
Literally just standing there and allowing Bermuda to take himself out by flying straight into Tsunaās fist. The sheer disrespect was so immense I screamed irl.
Even against Mochida, before he has access to hyper mode. Tsuna pinned his punk ass and tore all his hair out while making a stupid pun. King shit.
Tsunaās not a sweet little muffin who talks people down with the power of friendship, heās a piece of work when he wants to be
Heās just also so⦠Very kind. And forgiving. As long as you show him you mean what you say, that you no longer mean any harm, that you want to make amends? He will forgive and forget.
This isnāt always a good thing. This opens him up to a lot of pain. But I also think itās the proof of his strength.
A heart which loves no matter what aches it endures. This? This is what makes him so easy to adore, both in universe and out of it.

A friend of mine pointed out that people tend to date those with similarities to their parents.
When I started poking around the PJO franchise, my brain screamed that when I looked at Annabeth and then Gabe. And now I'm thinking about how Rachel may have similarities to Sally.
Please share Perachel thoughts.
This is so GOOD. I am only mad I didn't make the connection first. Percy is a mama's boy, so it's obvious his first girlfriend is a reflection of Sally. Bear with me, this is going to be LONG.
I am going to gloss over the bit about Annabeth and Gabe because it's not as much of a comparison as it is an analogy.
[Before anybody gets mad at anon, he wasn't saying Annabeth is like Gabe, he is paralleling them because Annabeth's form of mistreatment against Percy is so subtle but so deeply unsettling that he hasn't noticed it himself and if he has been feeling suffocated he hasn't yet connected the feeling to Annabeth.]
I feel compelled to clarify a few things in Gabe Annabeth comparison and why it's unfair.
Gabe was in no way, shape, or form Percy's parent.
Percy despises anything remotely related to Gabe like alcohol or poker, so Percy would never be with someone who, even for a second, reminds Percy of Gabe.
Gabe was exploitative of Sally, heavily so with no love or affection attached to it.
Annabeth, on the other hand, does love Percy. She, however, does not love him the way he deserves to be loved because her fatal flaw and a few toxic traits get in her way. For example, Annabeth has a habit of taking Percy for granted and is not appreciative of his efforts. She shows toxic possessiveness over him and almost always gets physical with Percy due to her lack of control over her emotions and not knowing how to express them well enough. She has consistently shown a poor understanding of Percy's motivations and his choices and has a habit of putting blame on Percy in several unnecessary situations. Character development would have served us all well but it doesn't seem very likely because Rick is Rick and Annabeth's fatal flaw is hubris, which means she is unlikely to acknowledge her toxic traits.
Now, back to our main point. Let's look at some direct or indirect parallels between Sally and Rachel and some things that deviate from the mold of Sally's experiences.
Rachel, I think, has always paralleled Sally. She is a mortal born with the sight, something that Sally herself has gone through. Rachel is Sally's past, and Sally is Rachel's future in a way, at least when it comes to their sight. Yet their final choices contrast each other, which is very fascinating.
Sally is a writer, and Rachel is an artist. They both have creative interests and aspirations. They are both naturally compassionate and kind but also very strong-willed.
What Poseidon was to Sally, Percy is to Rachel, and I think I really like that parallel. Maybe in another life, Sally would have said yes to Poseidon's offer, and in another life, Rachel would have turned down the Spirit of Delphi and pursued Percy, and Percy would have pursued her.
(They represent the pathway to an entirely new world to both Sally and Rachel, and its a feeling you cherish forever.)
Remember how being in the rain or near the sea makes Sally look younger and healthier, I think Rachel has a similar connection to the things Percy is connected with. After meeting him, she does seem to like beaches more. Considering her vacation spot was a beach and she also went on a beach date with Percy.
(You might think Percy chose that date spot, but it was obviously Rachel cause Percy is a gentleman who would definitely let his partner choose the date spots and then prepare the date for them as they like)
Her visions begin revolving around Percy, and Percy himself begins dreaming often of her. Not just visions but in general. It is stated in Botl that he dreamed of running into her again and not being able to answer her questions.
Another thing is that Sally parallels Rachel in case of emotional nuances between her and Poseidon and Rachel and Percy. Even after all these years, Sally trusts that Poseidon will not abandon Percy and will protect him when it comes to it, even after her death; especially after her death. The same way Rachel is comfortable in calling Percy whenever she is in trouble or when the visions are bothering her [I think we get a mention of how Percy has met with Rachel's father in The Last Olympian and how Rachel's father TRUSTS Percy's word about keeping Rachel SAFE.] And for the shippers, he has already met the parents and they approve lol.
The trust goes both ways, too. Cause we know Percy is an extremely private person and doesn't like to share anything about himself unless he is obligated too and even then sparingly. Even after being friends with him for so many years, Annabeth and Grover are in dark about a lot of things about him but Rache who has canonically had visions about Percy and his experiences, who has the power to tap into Percy's past and Percy is just so chill with that. Like he knows Rachel knows cause he has had several visions of his own about her, but he just lets it go.
Percy Jackson of all people TRUSTS Rachel enough to let her peek into his past experiences, hell it's because of her that he uncovered the true meaning of the prophecy and then TRUSTED HER WORDS ENOUGH TO STAKE THE FATE OF THE WORLD ON IT. We all know he hates Luke like no one else has hated Luke ever and yet GIVES Luke the knife, not cause of Annabeth's or Hermes's trust in him [they have both been wrong before] but because RACHEL SAID SO.
Another thing that's reminiscent of Sally's relationship with Poseidon is the fact that Sally was in no delusion of who she was with. No delusion of Poseidon being anything other than what he was, a force of nature and a god. He was kind and soft with her, but she was not disillusioned to his other natures. The same goes for Rachel.
Rachel doesn't expect Percy to be some tamed down version of himself or for him to suppress his impulses or nature. He is soft and nice to her. She appreciates it, but she doesn't expect nor want him to be anything other than what he is. As evidenced by the lovely painting she gives him of Percy looking fearsome against his battle with Antaeus. It was such a sight that Percy himself was jarred, but Rachel said he looked good. She was totally fine with his darkside, accepted it, and understood it.
Rachel also has a very positive relationship with things Percy is passionate about. She has a keen sense for environmental conservation as we see her participating in a charity work (actual volunteering) in BoTL and we know how sensitive Percy is on rivers or oceans being unclean.
She also seems to have a great bond with Percy's companions. Like you are telling me Blackjack, who has trauma of his time with being captive on Princess Andromeda under Luke, and who is fiercely loyal to Percy, let Rachel just order him into going to CHB like that. Obviously, Blackjack likes her enough to let her take him without Percy's explicit permission and without informing Percy because he knows his boss cares about her. I don't know how we, as a fandom, moved on from that scene. It's so beautiful that Rachel is able to connect to Blackjack so seamlessly. And how one of Percy's first thoughts is worrying about Rachel's well-being as soon as he finds out.
Don't even get me started on how him, including Nico and Hades in his wish and demanding justice and respect for children of Hades, is what broke the curse on the Oracle. I think Percy knew what Rachel was going to do or what her role was due to him seeing the visions of May Castellan, and don't tell me he didn't include Nico in his wish for that reason as well. And he was still so panicked when Rachel swore the oath to Apollo, despite the curse already being broken.
There's also a point of how they are both very integral part of Olympus and quite above the others in terms of hierarchy. Percy is the twice savior of Olympus. Several gods owe him a favor, and he is the prince of Atlantis. Rachel is the vessel of Spirit of Delphi, a force that has existed before even the gods. The Olympians need her, the demigods need her, and she is under the protection of Zeus himself. The two most important people in the world exempting gods and other immortals are literally them.
This is why it bothers me when people say Perachel is a big what if. Perachel isn't a what-if. It already happened. It simply didn't last. Not because they didn't want to but because the choice was taken from them. But both Percy and Rachel chose to save the world and chose to do the duty expected of them over dooming the world and being in a relationship. Destiny is inherently unjust as it were. The only what if's are what if they chose to defy expectations and rules and got back together anyway.
The Savior of Olympus and the Oracle of Delphi are a perfect match, but fate would not let it be. Perhaps in another world, they would have cared less about the fate of the world or less about defying Olympus. Maybe when Percy becomes immortal, he will finally get a chance to be with Rachel. In my headcanons, that is how it goes. I admit I like the dynamic of the strongest demigod ever and the Oracle herself teaming up. It's not like anyone can top that duo. The power couple that they would have been, the fandom is not ready for it.

ātill didnāt love ivan back!!ā okay well you are free to think that, but i just donāt see that as true. till did not truly love mizi. he loved her innocence and naivety, or otherwise, the concept of her. even if you donāt think he loved ivan romantically (which i will get to in a moment), ivan was still his friend. stop acting like he completely didnāt care about ivan just because he thought he liked mizi. ivan meant more to him than most people realize and i am a firm believer that if he just had more time to talk to ivan and truly sit with his feelings, then he would feel the same. it would take time, but i dont think it was at all one sided. idk im just rambling, dont fact check me on this.

Percy Jackson is a highly empathetic and compassionate character who shows kindness and loyalty to all kinds of people no matter what their background or story is. It didn't matter if they were mortals, immortals, gods, demigods, titans or monsters. He has shown kindness, compassion and loyalty to:
Tyson (his half brother, a cyclops, who he protected from bullies before and after knowing what he was. yes he faltered once but that was more of him feeling bad that he was once again the odd one at camp. he made up for his negative feelings about tyson being his brother by continuously saving him, standing up for him and finally recognizing him his brother. Percy believes so much in Tyson.)
Grover (his best friend, who he protected from bullies before finding out grover is a satyr sent to protect him. he defended grover vs the council of cloven elders, when they labeled grover as a liar regarding his news of Pan)
Rachel (his first mortal friend, who's bravery he admires. His thoughts about Rachel are very positive and he is constantly impressed by her. He has voiced out his respect for her on many occasions.)
Briares (ancient Hundred-Handed One, who was set free from his prison by Percy and his friends. He was abused and so afraid to the point where he wanted to fade like his brothers but ultimately saved chb b/c he was inspired by Tyson's faith in him. and who showed Tyson how to be brave and stick up for those in need? Percy.)
Blackjack (a pegasus who he saved from luke's ship and was so grateful to percy for it that he's always offering percy his help)
Mrs. O Leary (he adopted a literal hellhound for a pet and is fiercely protective of her. he once hesitated to kill hellhounds in TLO b/c they reminded him of mrs. o leary)
Cerberus (literally tells Hades "it wouldn't hurt to play with cerberus once in a while. he likes red rubber balls")
Bessie the Ophiotaurus (sea creature with the potential to destroy the gods but who percy advocated for in front of the 12 Olympians and asked them to save Bessie b/c you shouldn't kill an innocent creature on the basis that they might or might not destroy you)
Other sea creatures (he would lose hours of sleep doing rescue missions)
The river naiad from Geryon's ranch. He literally says he didn't want to be that kind of guy that puts his weight on being the son of Poseidon to get what he wants. He saw that she was scared and was only putting on a brave front to protect her ecosystem. She is one of the reasons why we have Percy embracing what it means to be a son of the sea god - the sea is within him.
He showed her compassion and in turn she tells him a secret. She showed him a way to save his friends.
Calypso (an immortal titanness punished for siding with her father Atlas and the other Titans. He felt extremely bad for Calypso, told her that it wasn't fair that she got punished for siding with her family and asked her how he could help free her. He couldn't stay in Ogygia but he did directly ask Zeus to release her. He also planted the moonshine plant she gave him like she asked "build a garden for me in Manhattan." He remembered her.)
Zoe Nightshade (hunter of Artemis. They had mutual respect after seeing a different side of each other.)
As soon as he figured out it was Hercules who had abandoned Zoe, he threw out his lion-skin cloak, which had been very helpful in keeping him safe from harm. He proceeded to trust Zoe and her judgement and he mourned her death. He actually didn't want to accept that she was dying at first, asking the others to give her more nectar and ambrosia and asking Artemis if she could heal her with magic.
Thalia Grace (the first person to hold her when she was resurrected, who yelled at the other campers to help her and to get her nectar and ambrosia.) For all the times they fought, he also felt protective of her:
Percy put his pride aside to beg Mr. D for help because he looked at Thalia and decided he didn't want to put her in a position where she would die to protect her friends again. Because how could he let that happen to her? He won't.
Clarisse La Rue (felt sympathy for her despite being bullied by her when he first got to camp b/c he recognized what kind of dad Ares was to Clarisse. He gave her the golden fleece, trusting her to complete the quest and save camp:
This even impresses Annabeth. Percy genuinely liked seeing Clarisse happy. He smiled when he noticed her and Chris Rodriguez hold hands at the end of botl.
Artemis (took the sky for her, which they both knew would have killed him, so that Artemis could help Zoe fight Atlas. In turn she vouched for Percy and Thalia when the gods voted on whether they were too dangerous to be kept alive)
Bianca di Angelo (he felt bad for the di angelos. they were taken out of the casino, hunted by monsters and soon after discovering that they were demigods bianca was asked to join the hunt. That is A LOT to process. Percy was the only one who asked her to consider other options before joining the hunters. He also reminded her that her brother couldn't go with her.)
He later was the first to voice out his support as long as she was happy and placed himself in her shoes to better understand where she was coming from:
Percy is the only one who saw Bianca's decision to join the hunters from both her and her brother's perspective. After asking her to consider her options and expressing initial disappointment at her decision, he adjusted his way of thinking and directly asked her how she was doing. How was she settling in with the hunters? How was her life with Nico prior to being discovered? He understood where both siblings were coming from and he tried to comfort and reassure them both (Nico at camp during capture the flag and Bianca during their quest.)
Ethan Nakamura (they were forced to fight to the death in the arena and while Ethan was trying to kill him, Percy only knocked him down and told him to run when he saw an opening. He later asked Ethan to come back with him but he refused. Percy's choice to not kill Ethan and letting him go literally led to Kronos rising b/c Ethan pledged himself to the titan lord right afterwards. Ethan was also the one who figured out Percy's vulnerable spot. He would have killed Percy had Annabeth not taken that knife for him. Percy, even after feeling "betrayed" by Ethan, STILL remembered and considered him when turning down immortality and literally asked for the minor gods to be given recognition - which was what Ethan wanted for Nemesis - and for the gods and demigods who sided with Kronos to be forgiven. Ethan also got his own shroud:
Nico di Angelo. Yes, Nico. Percy spent six months looking for Nico after he disappeared at the end of ttc when percy broke the news to him about Bianca with the goal of wanting to make things right with him. In the labyrinth, he said he felt Nico was close and he ran towards his direction, leaving annabeth grover and tyson running to catch up with him. Nico was double crossed by the owner of the ranch, Geryon ("you should've made me swear on the river styx") and got taken as prisoner to give to Luke Castellan later. It was Percy who bartered for his release:
Percy and his friends were free to go! What does Percy do instead? He makes Geryon a deal to make sure that Nico got out safely.
Also, I find it kinda interesting that Rick Riordan went the "percy talks shit about nico behind his back" route in HOO because this is Percy talking about Nico when he's not there in the og series:
Percy Jackson told the Queen of the Gods that she only cared about her perfect family, not real people, because she didn't secure Nico's safety passage through the ranch. Percy and Annabeth both made a bad impression with Hera because they disliked her attitude towards Nico di Angelo (there's more complexities to this scene but again I won't dive into them).
Percy also literally prayed to Poseidon to help him with Nico:
More of Percy caring about both Nico and Bianca di Angelo:
He claimed the prophecy so that Nico wouldn't have to. To save Nico from more suffering. He hid Nico's parentage from Chiron and the rest of camp because he wanted to prioritize his safety.
More on Percy having compassion towards Nico:
He told Nico that he could come with them on their quest, even if dangerous, because he didn't want to leave him behind. Nico refused. He asked Nico to stay at camp and even told him he could sit with him and Tyson at the Poseidon table (which is against the rules). Again, Nico told him no and instead said he needed to find out more about his past. Percy told Nico to keep in touch. At the end of the book, Percy invites Nico in for blue birthday cake b/c he felt bad that Nico had probably never been invited to a birthday party before.
Percy is later rewarded for what he did for Nico. Nico tells Percy that he found a way to help percy survive against Luke/Kronos as a way to thank him for what Percy did for him in Geryon's ranch (we later find out it's also because nico was crushing on percy but I won't get into that).
Another scene to add to the Percy Jackson Caring About Nico di Angelo list:
Hades had quite literally planned to imprison Percy in the Underworld a few chapters before this. For as much as Percy's trust in Nico wavered after that, he STILL found it in his heart to mention Hades and Nico by name in front of the other gods, requesting that they have a place at camp. Wishing for them to not be left out. Imagine that? Zeus was the one who killed Maria di Angelo, who nearly killed Nico and Bianca di Angelo had it not been for Hades. And Percy still rejected his offer of immortality and included Hades and Nico in his wish. Here was Percy, who offended the gods by rejecting immortality and by making them swear on the river styx to do good on their oaths, who had demanded a lot from them already, asking for Nico and Hades to be recognized after being cast aside and ignored by the gods.
Even his own dad, Poseidon, told Percy that he asked for too much. He did it for them. The forgotten, the unloved, the side lined demigods and minor gods and "peaceful titans" that sided with Kronos. Because that is who Percy is. Empathetic, compassionate, kind.
Chiron. Even the immortal mentor of heroes. Percy helped clear his name when he got accused of poisoning Thalia's tree (by tricking Luke into confessing via Iris Message)
Charles Beckendorf (one of his first real friend at camp besides annabeth and grover. Besides Percy and Nico, Beckendorf was the only one who Mrs. O Leary trusted enough to get close to her at chb. Percy thought of him when turning down immortality)
Silena Beauregard (felt angry on her behalf every time he saw how she looked grieving charlie. he never once told anyone she was the spy and thought of her when he made his wish at the end of tlo)
There are many others Percy is seen showing kindness and compassion towards, including HoO (that i won't get into because percy's character becomes less himself rip character assassination) and crossovers (Magnus Chase, Carter and Sadie Kane) but this is already long so I'll end it with this:
Hazel Levesque and Frank Zhang. Two Roman demigods who started at the bottom of the legion. Percy saw two underdogs and went "they're under my protection now." He even promised Hazel that Thanatos wouldn't take her back without a fight. Even after Percy got his memories back he never once cared about greek vs roman beef. These are his friends, his people.
Percy Jackson is usually awarded for his loyalty and compassion (see: Blackjack, Rachel, the river naiad, Nico) and sometimes it gets him nearly killed (see: Ethan Nakamura and his achilles spot, Nico both walking him into a trap because he trusted him and later saving him). He doesn't usually ask for anything in return.
In Rachel's case, he asked for her help in the Labyrinth because they needed a clear sighted mortal to lead them, but he emphasized how dangerous it would be and that rachel didn't have to do it. He also apologized to her for getting her involved and reassured her when she felt bad that she seemed to have led them to a trap even though she was sure that was the path they needed to go. Percy could have died but he never held that against her ("Don't feel bad, I'm usually about to die"). His faith in Rachel never wavered.
In Nico's case, he asked him to convince his dad Hades to join the fight and to lead the the seven to the doors of death (a task that he only trusted Nico with to successfully lead).
Percy Jackson inspires loyalty for good reason. He considers people, he sees them, understands them, encourages them and he either helps them or he lets them make their own choices (which he learned from Sally Jackson - "if my life has to mean anything I have to live it myself"). They are made better for it. Percy is made better for it.
His first instinct is always to fight for those who can't or don't have anybody else to stand up for them. You don't have to prove your worth because to percy, you already are worth it.
He is either "I love you so I will help you" or "I love you so I will let you go" and to him it does not matter who or what you are.

Annabeth, you know you're half mortal, right? You can't just pretend that isn't a part of you.
Didn't even remember that this was an aspect to the Annabeth and Rachel dynamic, but it really supports all I've been saying about how Percy and Rachel are so much more compatible, because they build their own world. Find the in-between of the mortal and the godly together. Ground each other in the half of themselves they feel disconnected to. And then there's Annabeth, who buys into the godly propaganda so hard. Annabeth who doesn't get along with her mortal family. Annabeth who's spent more of her life at Camp than anywhere else. Annabeth who wants to rebuild Olympus. Annabeth who wants to go to college in New Rome, a city absent of mortals. Even if I didn't think Percy and Annabeth's relationship was toxic, I still wouldn't ship them because they're just fundamentally incompatible.

Thinking about how often Jean quotes Neil to himself to feel safe. Thinking about Jean saying to Jeremy you donāt have to trust him because I do. Thinking of how Nora said if Neil had been a raven when he was supposed to be he could have never left Jean alone even after Kevin did. Thinking about Neil and his āone of us has to survive this, and itās going to be himā mentality taking root and growing into everyone he cares about. Including Jean. Thinking about misplaced forever partners. Thinking about two kids who had no one but each other in every version of the story except for the one we got, so we see this fractured longing version instead and theyāre so much better off, but thereās something missing too.
