D&D’s nihilism ruined Sansa Stark.
(i actually like show!show, but i enjoy being dramatic more.)
i could go on and on about how i think the got showrunners fundamentally misunderstood sansa from day one, but i’ll just cut to the chase: they’re nihilists. they genuinely seem to believe that sansa’s kindness in the face of relentless trauma is a sign of weakness. so, naturally, they stripped all that away by the later seasons. because apparently, if a woman isn’t burning people, stabbing someone, or spouting quippy one-liners every ten seconds, she’s simply not worth rooting for.
“oh look, sansa’s not praying anymore, she’s not gentle or hopeful. FINALLY, she’s cool! we fixed her!!” - d&d probably
in both the books and the show, sansa meets people who’ve endured horrors similar to hers. (e.g. sandor, cersei, and lysa) most have become needlessly hateful, or grew into abusers themselves. but in the books grrm (a self-proclaimed romantic) goes out of his way to show how sansa differs from this. how she doesn’t let herself be twisted by her pain, and that’s what makes her so refreshing. meanwhile, the show treats the most jaded, bitter characters like they’re the only ones who truly “get it,” implying that giving up on compassion or hope is somehow the smart move. and to really sell that narrative, they casually watered down key characters and their relationships with sansa.
to try and explain what i mean, i’m going to compare a specific scene from the books and the show…
a clash of kings - sansa iv :
She made herself look at that face now, really look. It was only courteous, and a lady must never forget her courtesies. The scars are not the worst part, nor even the way his mouth twitches. It's his eyes. She had never seen eyes so full of anger. "I . . . I should have come to you after," she said haltingly. "To thank you, for . . . for saving me . . . you were so brave."
"Brave?" His laugh was half a snarl. "A dog doesn't need courage to chase off rats. They had me thirty to one, and not a man of them dared face me."
She hated the way he talked, always so harsh and angry. "Does it give you joy to scare people?"
"No, it gives me joy to kill people." His mouth twitched. "Wrinkle up your face all you like, but spare me this false piety. You were a high lord's get. Don't tell me Lord Eddard Stark of Winterfell never killed a man."
"That was his duty. He never liked it."
"Is that what he told you?" Clegane laughed again. "Your father lied. Killing is the sweetest thing there is." He drew his longsword. "Here's your truth. Your precious father found that out on Baelor's steps. Lord of Winterfell, Hand of the King, Warden of the North, the mighty Eddard Stark, of a line eight thousand years old . . . but Ilyn Payne's blade went through his neck all the same, didn't it? Do you remember the dance he did when his head came off his shoulders?"
Sansa hugged herself, suddenly cold. "Why are you always so hateful? I was thanking you . . ."
"Just as if I was one of those true knights you love so well, yes. What do you think a knight is for, girl? You think it's all taking favors from ladies and looking fine in gold plate? Knights are for killing." He laid the edge of his longsword against her neck, just under her ear. Sansa could feel the sharpness of the steel. "I killed my first man at twelve. I've lost count of how many I've killed since then. High lords with old names, fat rich men dressed in velvet, knights puffed up like bladders with their honors, yes, and women and children too—they're all meat, and I'm the butcher. Let them have their lands and their gods and their gold. Let them have their sers." Sandor Clegane spat at her feet to show what he thought of that. "So long as I have this," he said, lifting the sword from her throat, "there's no man on earth I need fear."
Except your brother, Sansa thought, but she had better sense than to say it aloud. He is a dog, just as he says. A half-wild, mean-tempered dog that bites any hand that tries to pet him, and yet will savage any man who tries to hurt his masters.

LADY SANSA STARK walks through a castle hallway. SANDOR "THE HOUND" CLEGANE comes in the other direction.
SANSA: I beg pardon, ser. I should have come to you after to thank you for saving me. You were so brave.
THE HOUND: Brave? A dog doesn't need courage to chase off rats.
SANSA: Does it give you joy to scare people?
THE HOUND: No, it gives me joy to kill people.
SANSA: (gasps)
THE HOUND: Spare me. You can't tell me Lord Eddard Stark of Winterfell never killed a man.
SANSA: It was his duty. He never liked it.
THE HOUND: Is that what he told you? He lied. Killing is the sweetest thing there is.
SANSA: Why are you always so hateful?
THE HOUND: You'll be glad of the hateful things I do someday when you're queen and I'm all that stands between you and your beloved king.
SANSA turns and walks away.
Do you see the difference???…
in the book, sandor is terrifying. not just gruff, but genuinely dangerous. he puts a sword to this child prisoner’s throat. he mocks the way her father was murdered. he tries, with deliberate cruelty, to tear down her every ideal. he’s angry, brutal, and bitter, and he wants her to feel it. wants her to give into it. and yet, sansa resists this. she actually thinks down on him for having this sort of mindset: “He is a dog, just as he says. A half-wild, mean-tempered dog that bites any hand that tries to pet him, and yet will savage any man who tries to hurt his masters.”
now in the show, we get a scene with the same outline but none of the meat. sandor is vaguely menacing, sure, but the true danger he poses to her (both physically and psychologically) is gone. and sansa? she just walks away, seemingly accepting everything he says. there’s no moment of quiet defiance, no indication that the once hopeful, willful girl is still in there somewhere.
they could’ve easily added a small line like, “i’ll never be glad of hate.” to show us that beneath her practiced mask, sansa stark is still choosing compassion. still resisting the incessant pull of hatred. but instead, the scene ends with this original gem: “You’ll be glad of the hateful things I do someday, when you’re queen and I’m all that stands between you and your beloved king.”
and just like that, the show tells on itself.
they’re not interested in challenging sandor’s cruelty. they’re too busy endorsing it. trying to make it seem noble, even. the scene becomes a lesson in how violence can be useful, how hate can be protective, how the world is too broken for softness.
to the game of thrones showrunners, cynicism is enlightenment. and anyone who dares to hope, especially a preteen girl, is in need of receiving a “lesson.” *cough* season 5 *cough*
#yep#all of this#the funny thing#is that by having primed the audience#to hate Sansa#and to see Dany as a girl boss badass#they set themselves up#for an unpopular ending#no one but themselves to blame#for the mess they made of the show#and its ending
