What people must realize is they’re not just one single person who does weird, out-of-character things now and then. We’re all made up of many different selves who fight and compete with one another constantly. Somehow we’ve got to get them to agree on a few basic things. Get them to stop fighting with one another. But they all have different needs. One part of us wants safety, another wants adventure. I want to be loved. I want to be left alone…Those aren’t contradictions-they’re independent selves saying ‘I want this!‘ The trick is how to get them to agree on anything we do in life. -Jonathan Carroll

J.R.R. Tolkien, letter to Michael Tolkien, 6th November 1956
