Ughhhhh it's so hard worming the chickens in any season other than summer bc I tried treating their water and I swear they didn't even touch it. The grass gets wet overnight so I really think they just get moisture from the grass.
But the chicks have WORMS!! I might have to syringe feed them lol

Interestingly Star seems to have taken it upon herself to care for the chicks now? Like she keeps hanging out with them and tidbitting for them? I did just break her from broodiness but that shouldn't have activated her parenting instincts for 6 week old chicks 😭

Size difference between Peepo and Ice Cream. Ice Cream has always made it very obvious that he is a cockerel.

I'm so convinced this guy is a boy that I'm going to start calling him by his name, Ice Cream.
Although he is surprisingly quiet today

I guess if Barney turned out to be a girl then there's still hope for the current hatch

Someone is selling this brahma rooster and I am soooooo tempted to get him. Fluffybutt has been so good about the Araucana roosters, I haven't seen him try to fight them a single time, even after Purple has started crowing and breeding the hens. I think he would do really well in a multi rooster flock. And I really like the look of this guy, I don't love his body shape in the first pic he looks a bit unbalanced but he has those long legs that Fluffybutt really lacks. Looks like he has nice toes too all of my current brahma girls are brachydactyls. I just think he'd be great for my breeding project especially if he gets along well with Fluffybutt I think they each have good genes that would balance the flock well. Always good to have more genetic diversity too.
Obviously if I was gonna get another rooster I'd need to get rid of Blue and Purple first, for a minute there it looked like Purple had found a home but it ended up falling through. So in the end I might just have to cull them which is a shame but not the worst thing in the world.
Idk yet though but it's something to think about. It obviously depends on the roosters personality too I'll have to ask the seller about it.

Ugh idk why but I really love chickens of extreme size. I obviously love giant chickens like brahmas but I have also recently fallen in love with bantams. So tempted to have a group of japanese bantams join my flock.

Probably should've given this update a while ago buuuuut turns out Barney is just an ugly pullet.

Still probably going to cull her (or perhaps give her away) bc. She's ugly lol sorry. No but the peepers were never intended to be breeding birds, Hooter just turned out extra nice so I might keep her. But among other things, Barney has big wattles and a bad quality comb.
Really thought she was a cockerel growing up, mostly bc of those wattles. Sorry for misgendering you all that time Barney. Her tail also took a very long time to grow in, it only really appeared a couple months ago. But the lack of pointy saddle feathers and sickle feathers makes it pretty obvious she's a girl. Especially when you look at the araucanas which are a month or so younger than the peepers (although they do develop more quickly) and have the same biological mother.

('the peepers' is just what I called barney and hooter as chicks it's not their breed name or anything. i guess it's like their surname)

Barney (left) and Hooter (right). You can see they have very different faces but the same body type.

Wild mantis. This is a South African mantis, Miomantis caffra. They're most often green but I have occasionally found ones in other colours. Every boy I've ever met was green though, so this is exciting! He's a really nice brown that kinda fades into green, especially over his wings. Almost looks purple from some angles.

This was a resident mantis we had a few years back, believe it or she was originally green, but she slowly turned tan. As shown in this photo she was even pinkish for a while.

Perplexing creature. Smallest body, quietest, palest comb. But also, LARGEST comb, largest wattles, smallest tail. A complete mix of boy and girl traits.
I kinda hope they're a cockerel so I can feel less bad when it comes time to cull them. I'm not keeping them, that single comb just isn't what I want for my breeding project. I guess maybe I can give them away.
#i dont raise single combed birds so im not sure what is rooster or pullet sized for a comb at this age#maybe this is small for a pullet. but idk it looks pretty damn bit for such a young chick.#my pets#chickens#firstborn#peepo
