On Ice zine! My piece was inspired by the German folktale “Undine”. This is easily one of my favorite pieces that I’ve done for a zine, and I’m still really proud of it! <3 Sorry it’s taken me so long to share this!

Maybe a highschool au of crybaby (maybe pastel?) dan guilted by a really bad friend to enter a haunted house, then he has a panic attack (kind of?) at the first scare (maybe gore reminds him of something *cough cough* self harm recovery) and his friend is scared for his reputation so they leave him. Then theater geek Phil who was part of the scare notices and comforts him

“Come on, we can’t invite the crybaby.” Aaron complained, shaking his head and rolling his eyes.

“But think about how funny it would be! It’s just a harmless haunted house. He’ll get over it. I promise.” Neal poked at his friend who sighed in agitation.

“It’s just going to be annoying but…he’s your friend so if you want to bring him I guess I can’t stop you.”

Neal slapped Aaron’s back in victory and grinned. “It’ll be funny, trust me. Besides, he’s been begging me to invite him out places.”

Aaron raised an eyebrow. “I thought he hated people. And going outside for that mater.”

“He does. The other day he told me that he’s trying to ‘get out of his shell’ and ‘widen out’ or something. He’s desperate to people please.”

“Whatever. You’re the babysitter though.”

Dan’s POV

One of Dan’s hands played with the strap of his overalls as he leaned anxiously against the wall outside the classroom. His other hand was balled into a fist inside the sleeve of his lavender sweater as he stared at the floor. He nervously tightened and untightened his hold on the soft fabric, aware of the occasional stare someone sent his way. They must be wondering why he looked so terrified. If someone asked, he wouldn’t have been able to explain though. Dan always felt this way. He was especially terrified today though.

Murderbot’s friendship with ART has HUGE vibes of “you’re my only friend who’s neurodivergent the same way I am.” Like, Murderbot is super glad when it’s around its humans and can present as the rogue SecUnit it is rather than masking and pretending to be either an augmented human or a SecUnit still under the control of its Governor Module. But it still can’t really, truly, fully be itself around its humans–it still has to filter itself. And with ART–yeah, they bother each other a lot, but fundamentally I think they’re both really glad to be able to drop the filters and be exactly the kind of deeply caring (but also rude) assholes they are inside.

when murderbot had just borked its governor module, it was, for the first time, confronted with decisions like "can i help this person, or will that give me away?" and "if i follow this order (in order to protect my secret) and something bad happens, is it my fault because i could have said no?" it was constantly having to weigh the wellbeing of its clients against its own safety, right?

enter sanctuary moon, a world full of humans for whom mb is not in any way responsible. mb can't get attached (read: doesn't want to get attached) to real-life humans in part because bad things can happen to them, things that maybe mb could have prevented. the same is not true of fictional characters! whatever happens to them onscreen isn't mb's job to fix. whatever happens to them can't be on mb's conscience. media is a safe place for mb because, among other reasons, mb can't affect the narrative and therefore nothing that happens in the show is its fault. at a time when mb was being faced with all sorts of horrible moral dilemmas, media gave it a way to care about the wellbeing of humans without the moral dilemmas.

okay so taking this a step further. i think it's kinda funny that mb thinks art is such a baby for being upset when fictional characters die. art isn't used to being powerless, bud! art isn't used to weighing the benefit of saving somebody against the risk of being sold for parts. "people die and there's nothing i could do about it even if i wanted to" might be a nice bit of freedom for you, but art is stuck on the "people die" part. in art's world, it can make sure people don't die because it has that kind of power over its environment and not all that much to fear from exerting that power.

when art is actually put in a situation in network effect where it doesn't have that power, it doesn't hesitate to take the chance to save its crew at the risk of losing its relationship with mb. i wonder if that's a small part of why mb is so upset - not just that it was used, but that art didn't even do it the courtesy of having a moral crisis over using it. whereas art was probably like, "i lied to you and manipulated events so you wouldn't be confronted with a moral crisis over this, and yet you're still upset with me? what's not clicking??"

A Light & His Soul Snatcher (ao3) - natigail

Summary: Phil was the most powerful magic wielding human of the decade, even when he was just a child. He was what his people called a light - someone that was a pure source of magic. He’d been forbidden to leave his house because his parents were terrified that he’d attract soul snatchers, which was horrible creatures that consumed innocent souls. But Phil was a curious little one and he was bound to step outside eventually.

Dan had been a stupid young boy, who’d gotten too obsessed with the magical culture and peer pressured into doing something really dumb, just because all his friends had done it.
