Explaining things the Phandom misunderstand about taxation and marriage in UK

I have seen a lot of posts over time about if Dan and Phil got married, their tax assessments, money etc. I have responded on individual posts but I'm posting this here just as a handy reference to cover everything.

1) Common law marriage in UK: Common law marriage isn't a thing. This is quite a common misconception in UK as well btw

2) Relationship staus on tax returns: The options are: married/civil partnership, unmarried. There is no such thing as "de facto" for your tax return. Your relationship status is really only relevant if you are claiming marriage allowance and this can only be claimed by people who are married or in a civil partnership.

3) Would it make sense for them to get married for tax purposes? Short answer is no. The tax breaks you get as a married couple on UK are very small relatively speaking. Marriage allowance allows you to transfer up to 10% of your personal allowance to your partner which is maximum £1260. This gives the other person an additional £252 for their personal allowance. But this is only worthwhile if one of you earns less than the personal allowance threshold of £12,570. So in their case there would be no point.

4) Does it make sense for them to get married so they can be the other persons next of kin (if one of them *cough Phil cough* needs to go to hospital for example)? Again no. You can register your next of kin with your solicitor who will produce a legal document for both of you. Your relationship status is not relevant for this. Additionally if you are in hospital a lot of the time you can assign a next of kin and they generally respect that - regardless of your sexuality (there is also no restriction on who can go in an ambulance with you - that is not a next of kin situation). Next of kin becomes more of a legal issue when it comes to death/inheritance. So it makes sense to legally register so there is no opportunity for doubt.

5) If they got married, wouldn't it be easy to find out as it has to be announced? You have to register your marriage at least 29 days in advance in UK and the notice is made public in the registry office/town hall/council offices (depending on where your registry office is in your borough or city) for that period so that people have the opportunity to object. So there would be a small chance that if they registered, someone would find out, but it's quite unlikely.

i bound i'm half doomed and you're semi-sweet by The_ Blonde. i love this phanfic, with its talking trees and thieving faeries and mist-shrouded, angry sea. so I made it into a book—twice. you could say one cover is phil-themed and the other dan-themed.

there were lots of new skills to be learned in the making of these books, from the made endpapers (which did turn out slightly rumpled in places, much to my chagrin) to the gold-painted titles (for which I used acrylic and a tiny stencil). and so the books didn't turn out perfectly, but i am still more than happy that they now live on my shelves :>
