"I used to sell flowers," she's saying, tucking a long stem underneath the twine. "The crowns I displayed would prompt children to run up to me and ask for one. It was adorable seeing them count out their bronze."

WARDING BOND ➝ chapter four
(His thought process was simple: The Proto Magi had to fix him. With fear solid and sour in the back of his throat, Xantheus decided he could not handle the room for error. The Vault would save him. He would live if he left to find it, alone or with unhappy company. If he didn't, he'd die. It was easy to choose which future he preferred. And besidesif he truly was unsalvageable, he knew with a cold certainty that the Vault wouldn't be found for another hundred years. History lied, but it was consistent and if that was to be the fruit Rowan's hard research would bear, then so be it. If forever wasn't possible, he was learning to be content with enough.)

WARDING BOND➝ chapter three
Xantheus watches her for a moment, before turning back to his flames. "You don't cremate the remains?" he asks. "That's what we do in Caldra." Gruffudd shakes his head. "A waste of firewood." "Ophelia would call it a waste of a body." Xantheus huffs and it is close enough to a laugh that Gruffudd's willing to round up for them both. Seren tucks her bill into her spectral wings, combing it through to fix a crooked feather. "She would, aye." Gruffudd smiles. It tempers, at the end, but the fire in Xantheus' hands relaxes and flutters to a resting ember. "They were different, her customs." "But they were hers." "But they were hers," Gruffudd echoes, solemn as he is fond.

MARMALADE ➝ complete
"I was wondering why the orange basket on the table never seemed to run out," Daisy says, cheeks flushed with a shy gratitude. "He must have been buying more every morning." Rowan nods, syrupy with sleep. "He takes very good care of us." "I wonder if anyone ever…" she trails off, considering their empty plates and crumpled napkins. Then she rises to her feet, patting her clothes clean of any grass and crumbs. In a flash she is gone, disappearing into to tavern and emerging with oranges in her skirt. Daisy settles back at Rowan's side and begins to peel. She and Rowan share a few, but the rest she carefully saves and sets apart.

WARDING BOND ➝ chapter two
That night, Gruffudd sets up his tarp a little bit away from the rest of the camp. Xanethus comes to sleep eventually, pausing when he sees Gruffudd waiting for him under the branches, pipe in hand. He's been so conservative with his tobacco, but it has been a long journey. This will use up the last of it and they're still a few days yet from Ashen Rest's borders, but there's no better time than now. Xantheus' jaw tightens. So he does recognise the blend. Gruffudd lets the moment simmer, eyes closed and focused on the taste and smells. The way the forest shivers and how differently it feels here compared to the ice floes that ride the cold rivers of his home. Now that he knows to look for it, there's a sharp edge to Xantheus' scent. Not quite metallic, because it isn't metallic, not really. It scatters close to something profane. Something that the magicks of Althe shudders in the presence of.

WARDING BOND ➝ chapter one
Even lying prone in the middle of the road, there's this spark in the lordling. A hunched ferocity in his kneel, one hand gripping the sash looped around his chest and the other lay free of weapons, but not, Gruffudd notices, free of danger. Gruffudd's paw tightens on his staff. Reptilian eyes immediately flash towards the movement. His trembling mouth draws open. The rhythmic breaths, shallow and tight, start to collapse under a swelling panic. This is a man with his head nearly buried in water. Those claws will rake across any hand that might help him, friend or foe. It does not matter. Desperation makes beasts of them all.

AS YOU FISH ➝ complete
Nami grins. “You miss him.” The denial sits quick on Sanji’s tongue, but he overturns the glass of habit and swallows the rest. It’s been a long time since he’s lived with invisible lines drawn in the sand. Those self-sustained cages that prevented him from allowing himself such simple things like love and the permission to be loved. His heart aches. He is learning not to hate it. “Of course I do,” Sanji finally agrees, giving into the call and looking out towards the sea. “Luffy’s been gone for a week.”

A QUIET NIGHT ➝ complete
A small rectangle is placed back into his hand. The volume of it slots nicely in place like an old friend. Zoro finishes his automated movement, holding it up to the unlit cigarette between Sanji’s lips. It catches; beautifully so. This close, Zoro can catch the movement of Sanji’s mouth. The slight push forwards, the suck of smoke and the shiny seashell lacquer illuminated by the flame. “Careful there, Zoro,” Sanji says. His fingernails scratch lightly at the scalp in reward and Zoro positively melts. “Chopper’s been on my case about secondhand smoke.” “Then stop smoking. Two birds with one stone.” Sanji laughs. “Yeah, well, I’ve never been too good about doing what people tell me.” The understatement of the year.

INSIDE THE LINE ➝ chapter three
She asked him: How old are you, Sanji? A dot of ink appeared instead of an answer. Like he wasn’t sure he should say anything. She could imagine him narrowing his eyes, suspicious. Eight. And a half? A quarter? Three quarters? Four-fifths? Sanji used to update her regularly, always proud of the six minutes he had over his brother Yonji. Six months of silence wasn’t an accident. Something happened to him. Someone robbed him of markers and did something to him. Or, the one where Robin and Sanji are soulmates.

INSIDE THE LINE ➝ chapter two
“So you’re from the North Blue,” she says. The pen drops from his hand. Robin picks it up from where it had bounced, testing the weight of it. If it was Doskoi Panda branded, the logo had long been smudged off by habit, heat and finger oils. Not as damaged as Luffy’s, but heavier with more history. More souls. This is something that has been passed down. “How—” Sanji stammers. “You—” “I had fourteen years to learn. Fascinating comics you have up there.” Or, the one where Robin and Sanji are soulmates.

INSIDE THE LINE ➝ chapter one
Clover once explained it to her like this: soulmates are cut from the same whole. Thick parchment trembled in his hands as he held them up in example. Then he tore the page in half and laid the pieces out in front of her, one on top of the other. In the ashes of her memory, it had looked magical. “These are our souls,” he said. Clover held a pen down in the very middle and they both watched as the ink started to spread, staining both pages with a dark-coloured flower. Or, the one where Robin and Sanji are soulmates.

chapter four.
“Dinner at yours next week, then?” “If you fancy your chances,” Zeff shrugs. “He’s shit with a knife, but uncanny with a blade.” “Don’t tell me he uses kitchen knives for that.” “M’fraid so.” Zeff nods, solemn. “I’d love to meet who raised him, then,” the Chef purrs with a wide assortment of teeth. “Perhaps they’d like to star in one of my entrées.”

chapter three.
“I’m never going on land again.” “That’s quite the declaration, Cook-san.” There’s a precarious shift. The dislodged dust scatters down, painting Robin’s vision with snow. Sanji sighs and they must be closer than Robin first thought. His breath keeps kicking the dust up, granular waves ebbing and flowing like tides scoring the sand.
