Philogynoir: The Safe Space
I am so happy to announce I’ve taken steps to create an ACTUAL digital safe haven for black girls to vent and converse with one another!!
To curb the trolls, I will say no more.
If you are a black woman/girl/femme/femme-leaning person and take interest in the topics of black feminism/womanism, add this page on Facebook: https://m.facebook.com/philo.gynoir.9?ref=bookmarks.
We will vigorously check each and every profile before allowing you access into the space. If certain profiles still seem fishy, we will require a video chat to confirm your identity.
Can’t wait to converse with you all WITHOUT the trolls! I’m so excited for this you guys don’t even know 😭
This is will be a sanctuary. Let a black girl in need know…NOW.

Thank you!

Hey, guys. Sorry this isn’t really related to writing, but would you mind sharing this video around and giving it a like and maybe spreading some positivity in the YouTube comments? There are too many racist white people mad in the comments about not being able to experience misogynoir and it has waaaay more dislikes than likes, and that disgusts me.
Maybe subscribe to her too if you want to show extra support.

Confessions of a Former Coon
So yea, the “pre-woke” stage is something we’d all like to pretend didn’t happen, but, it did.
In high school, I was only attracted to guys who were either light skin or mixed.
“You don’t look fully black” and “are you biracial?” were compliments. Shit, I lied on the daily about my race as a way of disassociating myself from blackness.
I thought those who used AAVE were less intelligent.
My point is that we all had to start somewhere. So, if you are currently unlearning internalized racism, sexism, etc., be kind to yourself - it takes time.

Misogynoir | My Personal Experiences
So first, yay me for uploading twice in one week! Second, another pat on the back for displaying vulnerability despite the trolls.
This is the first installment (girl bye lol) of my womanist videos.
Here, I explain my personal experiences with misogynoir and how anti-black misogyny makes me feel. This is a long, virtually unedited video to show my imperfections.
Black women are not robots. We are human; I am human. Hopefully my womanist videos will help both my audience and myself embrace ourselves in totality. Even the self we hide from everyone.

Let’s get something straight, African American Vernacular English (AAVE) is not broken English.
We’ve all been told to speak “right” when using language unique to black Americans. We’ve all been made to feel as if there is something inherently wrong - more importantly, inferior - with speaking AAVE. The truth is, there is absolutely nothing wrong with the way in which most African Americans speak.
Language is language. There is no right or wrong way to speak which would justify the mistreatment of those whose English differs from your own.
The only reason AAVE is considered to be a bastardized version of English is because we are a marginalized group in a white supremacist society. Dassit.
See, I BE knowing. 💁🏽

This week’s topic is Misogynoir!
Reals quick - hi! I’m back from my hiatus. Needed a break from all the hate. Also needed time to reevaluate what I wanted to accomplish with Philogynoir.
Okay, so what is misogynoir? Coined by Moya Bailey on the Crunk Feminist Collective, misogynoir explains the specific brand of fuckery - her words, not mine - that black women experience at the intersection of sexism and anti-black racism.
Trudy, the author of The Gradient Lair, explains misogynoir as follows, “It alludes to specifically Black women’s experiences with gender and how both racism and anti-Blackness alters that experience diametrically from White women (as anti-Blackness and White supremacy make White women the “norm” in terms of intersectional experiences with gender, even as solely via gender, misogyny harms all women) and differently from non-Black women of colour (as though they face racism, the dehumanization associated with anti-Blackness is more than racism or sexualized objectification alone, but speaks to the history of Black bodies and lives treated as those of non-persons).”
In this video, I explain the term from a Black feminist perspective. Stay tuned for Thursday’s video as I will speak on the term from a womainst stance; relaying my personal experiences with misogynoir.

I’m not ashamed to say that I struggle with depression and anxiety.
More Black people need to be open with their mental illnesses and defeat the stigma.

I come first
I was listening to The Friend Zone podcast last week and Fran make such a great point: there's nothing wrong with being selfish. This really resonated with me because my ENTIRE life, people have expected - and later demanded - I place their needs above mine. After so many exhausting years of helping others before myself, I decided to stop. Of course, I was called selfish repeatedly. Shit, even by my own mother (for refusing to deplete my savings for a man 🙄). In the podcast, they talk about the stigma surrounding the term selfish and how selfishness is necessary to persevering your mental and emotional health. I bout hit the floor. Philogynoir has been mentally/emotionally exhausting to say the VERY least. If I'm not being trolled to hell, people are constantly asking to "pick my brain." Yet they offer zero compensation for my time and labor. Most of these people are not black women by the way. When black women reach out, they are offering love and support. Most everyone else is asking for free labor. The thing is, I don't mind helping people. I don't mind sharing knowledge with those who are looking to learn, but NIGGA, leave me alone sometimes. I freelance full-time while being a stay at home mom. Without adding in my chronic depression/anxiety, my life is hectic. Video production takes days y'all. Days. I do this shit for a living (freelance videographer). If after taking 20+ hours to produce a video on Philogynoir, you are asking for MORE content, it's often too much. Again, I'm not a robot. I'm not saying don't ask, but be mindful that I may not answer. That is not an excuse to attack me. Especially not while operating under the guise of a "fan." Either you rock with ME - not Philogynoir, Bri - or you don't. But what you not gon do is demand I mammy for you while you belittle me. You betta let that slave mentality go. Cuz look, I ain't the one. K?

Thank you. This is a prime example of why I make content specifically for black women.
We do not have the space to be vulnerable. If we are not muling for everyone else, we're coerced - one way or another - back into doing so.
This person made an entire post minimizing the severe online harassment I've been subject to for months. This shit isn't going to "blow over" as they put it. It's consistently gotten worse.
Non-black women interact with me as if I'm a textbook that they are entitled to opening whenever they please; I am not. I do not have to answer your messages. I do not have to exert energy just because you asked. You do not own me. And as I say all the time, you're not entitled to my intellectual labor. No matter how much you love me.
Your life is not more important than mine. Especially when you are not my target audience. Like, how dare you demand I center you when you've made it clear my well-being is of no importance to you.
You can find yourself another mammy because I'm not the one.
I was on Philogynoir's Youtube channel and the comments people leave on her channel are disgusting. I enjoy watching her videos and seeing her videos get so many dislikes and people leaving racist/sexist comments hurts me. She's been getting even more hate by this Youtuber that makes fun of people and his fans always attack those people.
I talked about how tough it is to come across the comments under her page. I make it habit to watch her amazing videos and avoid the comments because they’re so disgusting. It’s funny when black women want liberation and when we speak about our injustices socially and systematically it’s met with anger.
