Hi, cool/favorite aunt here - IT TAKES WORK FROM THE BEGINNING. If you aren't there for the countless hours of Thomas & Friends or Trolls or Frozen or whatever mind numbing obsession your nibling has that they force you to watch over and over and over again, you aren't gonna be there for when their interests are so much more...well interesting.

If you aren't there for the birthdays or hanging out with them or taking an active interest in them as children, you're not gonna be there when they are a teen.

You have to build a relationship with kids, and that just doesn't magically happen the day they turn 13.

I have sat through hours of Mario trivia. I have let a preschooler put makeup on me. I have had my hair ripped out letting them brush it. I have read the same book 10x in a row because it's their current fave. I have played Barbies and done the voices. I made an Encanto-obsessed 3 year old's dream come true by dressing up as the Luisa to her Mirabel.

I let my nephew rant to me when my sister and brother-in-law are driving him crazy. Because valid. They drive me crazy too. I don't snitch on him when he tells me he's planning a prank (an innocent one) on his dad. Like, yessss, put the tape over his mouse sensor.

Oh, mom outlawed play-doh and markers? Well, this is Auntie's house, and we have different rules at Auntie's house.

And you know what? THEY LOVE ME MORE THAN THEIR OTHER AUNTS WHO DON'T DO THOSE THINGS.

I know that a lot of you are banking on having little to do with your nephews/neices as children and then becoming their "cool aunt" once they become teenagers, but I think that you will find, upon analysis, that a random middle-aged woman stepping into a whole-ass teenager's life and arbitrarily declaring herself to be a "cool aunt" is, in fact, the least cool thing it's possible to do.
