Kaito's voice was normally relaxed and smooth, like the glass exterior of a building. But now, his eyes narrowed and fingers twitching, he changed. "I will leave you alone once you tell me! Tell me what you know of the Numbers, and why I've been sent here! Tell me what you saw back there!"
With those words, Kaito carved a bold step across the concrete, reaching to push his glowing hand onto Ryoga's chest. He attempted to wrap his other arm around the Shark, leaving him at the mercy of the hungry device.

Even Kaito's iron stillness was disturbed by this sight. A ripple passed through Kaito's body. His eyes neared the card. It had been a mistake to monitor the last Sphere Fields from a distance; now questions buzzed and whirred like machinery around his head, beckoning to be answered and put to rest.
"Yuma," Kaito said, voice deep and serious, "Where did you get this card?"

Kaito gulped at the unexpected shift in topic. He'd been hoping Yuma knew more, but this possibility had just vaporised. "If only no allies or worlds were at risk, we could simply enjoy what we had fought so hard to achieve," he said in an exasperated tone. That was meant to have been a thought.
"We capture the Numbers, and win our duels. One day, this has to end."

He does indeed, Kaito quickly thought. Even someone dumb as a chair emotionally could read it. Why did he come here in the first place? It was to discuss the issue of the Barian World.
It was better to quickly dismiss the previous topic. "Yes. I thought it was fairly obvious from my work and background." He stared at the artefacts around him, and knowing they'd sit there without a master, he shuffled uncomfortably.

Narrowing his eyes, Kaito matched Galaxy's step backwards with a forward step of his own. "I am your master, Kaito Tenjo. And I don't like your attitude." The tampering of his memory had clear effects on him; he was a merciless beast.
"I am hunting for Haruto's sake. And because I enjoy it."
Distant footsteps reverberated along the walls of the alley; another victim approached. Kaito's entire body was now shrouded as he turned away and walked toward the sound, blending in like a chameleon.
The Light that Faded
Galaxy’s eyes widen upon seeing his shadow solidify and rise from where he was, even more so as they shot toward her. She took a step back, only to realize that they could not come any closer. She scowled and stood up straight.
“I am Galaxy-Eyes Photon Dragon, the Number’s Menace. Something I have been and shall always be for my master.” she folded her wings and lowered her guard. Her mind screamed at her to attack, but her will forced her not to do so.
“…If you are who you say you are, then why do you hunt Numbers.” she had to comfirm his reason. If he was Kaito, then she would help him even if it were the end of her.

"Yes, it's a necessary evil," said Kaito in a quick breath. He payed no attention to Fuuya until he saw movement out the corner of his eye. As though he sensed danger, the hunter quickly extended his arm to block Fuuya's move. The outside of Kaito's forearm impacted Fuuya's.
However, Kaito was unable to maintain balance, collapsing onto Fuuya like a card falling to the ground.

Fuuya blinked, and his brows knitted in confusion and concern. He had gathered that much from the papers he had looked at, but what he didn’t understand was why Kaito needed to retrieve the Numbers and why Fuuya held one.
But Kaito’s reaction caught his attention before any question could be voiced.
“Please don’t look upset, sir. If you retrieve Numbers, then you’re doing something good! You keep the people who hold the Numbers from hurting more people.”
Fuuya shifted closer, and tentatively reached out to touch Kaito’s clenched fist. Everything about Kaito seemed tense, but in a different way that Fuuya. With Fuuya, he seemed so tense and afraid that he might break if you touched him, but with Kaito, he seemed like he’d snap at anyone at any given time. It frightened Fuuya.

It was striking how vulnerable the usually-proud hero looked in such a small ball on wide white sheets. Unlike the haughty hero he had seen in commercials while flying around Heartland City, Fuuya was only a patch of sky amidst clouds it seemed -- and it was such an odd analogy.
"If I could warn you what to avoid, I would." Even the almighty hunter had shortcomings. "Numbers simply appear, and I must... retrieve." The final word was shaded with doubt, as though a swipe of an eraser had passed through it.
Kaito clenched his fist and looked down between his knees, focusing on the creamy carpet. He hated being powerless.

Fuuya shrugged and sat at the head of the bed, curled up so as not to take up much space. He looked very small.
“I don’t intend to. It’s not really something I can control, I think. When it happened, I wasn’t… It seemed to be something beyond me. I higher power sort of thing.”
Fuuya didn’t believe in higher powers, and he didn’t think Kaito did either. But whatever it was that had gotten Fuuya into such a state when the Number took hold was clearly powerful.
He offered Kaito an uneasy smile as a silent apology for talking so much. Even though Fuuya was supposed to be a hero, he felt protected around Kaito.

Kaito forced a semi-smile. "Yes. He sounds like an amazing man," came a half-baked reply. He was so vulnerable, and tensed his muscles to prevent any trembling of the mind from showing physically.
Confidence returned to the hunter as he returned to his territory of emotional torpor. "My memory of my father is unclear. Since he became engrossed in his research about a year after Haruto's birth, we've hardly seen him."
"Do you miss your father?"

Disconnection with Kaito's own soul seemed obvious, but there was no need for a heart. A bloodthirsty wolf, he was beyond salvation, and even his own conscience would fade, he thought.
Eyes narrowed, he replied. "I am Kaito Tenjo, stealer of souls and a Numbers Hunter. Do you remember who you are?"
Kaito's shadow morphed into tendrils, and became icy. It extended in the impossible direction of off the ground and towards Galaxy-Eyes' light, darkness only yielding at her brilliance.
The Light that Faded
Galaxy’s hands clenched and unclenched. She felt betrayed by the sight in front of her. Hadn’t her master stop hunting after his duel with his father?
She disintegrated into light, re-appearing in front of the hunter. Her head was low but high enough to see the lifeless body crawled out on the cold ground. Her head rose ever so slightly and glared at Kaito.
Fangs barred she more commanded than asked in a menacing voice, “Who are you.”

A distinct hostility burst like light in Kaito's mind, then faded away. His soul, Galaxy-Eyes Photon Dragon, must be reacting to something in the vicinity. Upon closer focus, the aura of Yuma Tsukumo seemed to be nearby.
Then, he heard the voice.
Kaito looked forward, to the sides, behind, then up and down. No-one seemed to be there. "Is there anyone there?"

Floating around, Grace noticed a blonde and dark green haired boy wearing a trench coat. “Huh? He looks familiar…” she murmured.
As she stared at the boy, she suddenly remembered who he was. “Oh! I remember… That’s Kaito, the boy my master dueled and talked about.”
A smile appeared on Grace’s face as she floated in front and above of Kaito. “It’s too bad he can’t see me. I would drop down and say hello if he could.” she thought. Then, with a small smirk, she decided to do it for fun.
Flying down, she smiled and waved her hand in front of Kaito’s face. “Hello!” Grace said, giggling.

"I'm sure he will." Kaito's face became softer, and for once, he wanted to take his mind away from the iron burden of his job. However, the memories won't fade, not unless something were to replace it.
"Haruto, did dad tell you anything about starting school? As soon as you're recovered, that is."
“It’s okay, brother.” Haruto said, returning the glance to Kaito with a smile, then followed his eyes to where the tower was supposed to be. “The tower was the symbol of the city, and I’m sure dad will make it something good for all.” He made a pause, gazing again the older. “And you too, brother!”
The child knew that his sibling has a soft side that few people was able to see, that’s why he believed Kaito could do something to protect Heartland City.

"Later, though." Kaito entered his room and sat down on the king-sized bed. Immediately, an odd sensation pushed its way to Kaito's face at another person invading a space no-one else encountered, but he dismissed it.
"I'll tell you this again: Avoid all further involvement with the Numbers." Slightly nervous at Fuuya's prescence, he flicked his eyes around the room for something else to focus on. There was only his computer desk and bedside table.

Fuuya was oblivious as well, yet in his defense, he knew no other implications that there could be. He nodded and smiled, a bit relieved that Kaito wasn’t holding a grudge toward him.
“That’d be nice. If you like, later on I can help you clean up, yes? I mean, you’ve been so kind to me all night, it’s the least I can do to repay you.”
Fuuya followed Kaito through bland room after room, and still his eyes seemed full of wonder. He wanted to commit this place to memory, having only known the interiors of the studio and his own home.
He wanted to remember some place new, some place different.

Why did Fuuya consider himself inferior to Kaito? The hunter was used to fighting to prove himself, but wasting ones potential like this was odd. "What's the matter? How about we sit down somewhere? There's a space in my room."
Kaito quickly glanced at the featureless living room, and led the way after brief hesitation. He was oblivious to the implications of his words.

Tentatively, Fuuya stepped forward, his gaze fixed on Kaito to see if he would suddenly change his mind. Though when he was at his previous place beside Kaito, he kept his eyes fixed modestly downward.
“Uhm, I-I really am sorry.” Kaito had shown no need for another apology, but it was like Fuuya to apologize for anything bad he might have caused. He was supposed to, and he usually avoided more scorn than usual that way.

"Hello. Who are you? You seem very similar to someone else I know."
Just in case, Kaito opened his palm wide, shifting the muscles in his arms to feel his Duel Anchor and Photon Hand were still there. Astral and Barian beings always bore ill tidings.

He had recognized this duelist, from memories he had gotten from Astral before he had his own body. Astral had been afraid of him, before the duelist became a friend of Yuma.
Dark Mist wasn’t surprised to see him, he felt that he would be seeing him more than usual.
“Hello, Kaito Tenjo.” He greeted the other calmly.

When Kaito's head expanded, his brain didn't seem to expand with it. Only a few moments of flailing like a fish out of water passed before he rolled onto his back to ask Ryoga for help--
--Seeing half-burned pants and underwear belonging to Ryoga beckoned Kaito's hand towards his eyes, but they could only reach halfway. Instead, a shroud of darkness masked Ryoga's lower body. He seemed to have an odd elemental power too.
"I have no words. Help me up."

The Light that Faded
the-photon-star:
Galaxy floated in midnight skies of Heartland City. The night sky above her was calm, but the city under was busy as usual. Spotting at part of the city that was quite, Galaxy landed softly on her feet. Just she was about to take in a deep breath, she heard a pain filled scream down the road. Using her wings, Galaxy was over there in a instant. She watched a man fall in the cold ground, going from a young man, to a aged and lifeless vessle. Looking up to see who did this, her eyes widen. “K-Kaito-sama?”
The form of the lady-dragon approaching the narrow-eyed hunter was familiar. Those unmistakable wings glowing with light like that of a torch through glass were those of Galaxy-Eyes Photon Dragon, his soul.
She would co-operate. With a fiendish smirk, Kaito crushed the radiance in his hand, revealing yet another Number. For Haruto's sake, he would be a demon, and he coldly turned away to stalk a further target.

Was this woman studying him? Kaito was a phantom Numbers Hunter, and to be gawked at was insulting, especially in the middle of an easy job. Though, he could take time out to spice up the mundane picking.
"I am no-one you should know. And who are you, to ask me such a question?" Kaito's voice was smooth and level, much like the quick turn to face her.

Akari stared the boy up and down, hoping to evaluate as much of him as possible before saying anything. Sure, he was pretty small, but his sour expression was enough to tell her he wasn’t just some kid. It was annoying, not knowing people. Akari just had to be in-the-know.
“And who are you?” she asked, moving a hand to her hip. If she had to interrogate him, she would. “I don’t recognize you.”
