Okay okay, so just a little (not) rant about Howl, I apologize if I come off as a little harsh or captious, it stems from my love book and the movie. I am beyond frustrated with the mischaracterization of Howl and lack of attentiveness towards his negative qualities.

This goes for any character, but it especially peeves me in his case because his character has amazing complexity and depth. I’m understanding of the fact that most writers are referencing Howl in the movie which is fine (I say this because I believe it is much easier to understand him from the book), we can still gather a lot about his psyche through direct and indirect characterization in the movie that Howl isn’t perfectly charming as most chalk him up to be.

In most of the media I’ve read containing Howl he’s described as Flamboyant, selfish, melodramatic, and vain, or overly doting, mature, gentle, empathetic. While he isn’t void of these traits, Howl is neither entirely one nor the other. Most of the time i see others writing him as an extreme of either of these, and not a balance between the two like he should be.

Howl in both the book and movie is shown to be arrogant, self-serving, reckless, inconsiderate, and immature. While he does show fundamental decency, this is fronted by the bad stuff as a means of (what he deems) protecting himself. Howl is a coward, he’s afraid of vulnerability, constantly avoids commitment, and this is how he acts towards Sophie too.

I think that this mischaracterization is because of people trying to romanticize him and fit him to a set of ideals that he just can’t be reduced to without it making his character seem 2D.

My Kamui Woods theory is that his quirk is related to Urushi, the Asian lacquer tree.

1) His ultimate move is called Lacquer Chain Prison.

2) While his wiki says the flowers on his belt are roses, they look more like the peonies that you often see on carved lacquerware. Either the manga artist was drawing sloppy roses or reasonably accurate peonies that symbolize honor and courage which matches Kamui's hero persona. I think they're a reference to his ultimate move.

3) Kamui's red leafy hair is also a match in shape and color to urushi leaves in autumn.

In this scene, Steb has his ears pinned back. His ears naturally rest pointing outward from his head. In the second scene, it looks like he's holding them back, but if you look closer in the first one, they're actually just resting flat against his head.

I see a lot of people saying that it's probably due to him being sad about Maddie's betrayal, but I feel like that's a little too vague. YES, he's most likely sad that his buddy stabbed him in the back, but I feel like it's more a shame kind of thing.

IN THE GIF BELOW, you'll see what I'm talking about. He looks over at Caitlyn, but after giving her a small glance, he looks back down, seeming to show some kind of shame or defeat. (Maybe even hopelessness?) There doesn't appear to be an out in their situation, and Steb knows that. I suppose he COULD be ashamed that he had trusted Maddie, but I feel like it's mainly just the defeat from the battle.

You can see his whole ear in the kneeling scene, and it's clear that he's not touching it. His ears just naturally pin back during some situations.

Not only that, but there are multiple scenes where you can see his ears twich. (I picked scenes from the same episode since it's easier to see here.)

But this is where my third bullet point comes in, as well as why I'm kind of iffy on it. During the fight with the shimmer guys, Steb almost gets FUCKING SPLIT IN HALF, but Loris comes in clutch and sheilds Steb.

While Steb is curled up for the impact, he pins his ears against his head, as you can see here.

I feel like him being "Scared" isn't exactly the reason why he pinned his ears against his head. During the whole fighting scene, you can tell he is QUITE terrified, but he didn't have his ears pinned back until the scene above. I feel like it's less terror and more tension. He tensed up and curled on himself due to him expecting impact, causing him to pin his ears back.
