After the end of the manga I’ve been really inspired to write for this fandom. This is the first work that I’ve finished, I also have another multi chapter one in the works.
This one is a sweet and fluffy one where I explored how the dynamics between Suou, Ouni and Rochalízo could be post canon, for everyone who would be interested in reading that! :)

Liontari’s end made me somewhat sad too…but considering I had expected something worse for him I was also relieved at the same time 😅.
I thought that his character might be used as an example that not everyone gets to have a redemption even more than it already was. He got a semblance of peace, even if he had to leave at the end, it consoled me a little bit. However, considering how young he was, the ending that he got still made me sad.
I cried my eyes out at the ending that Ouni got and shed more tears at the last few pages. This manga has been a wonderful journey.

I can’t be the only one who sometimes wonders what the Daimonas before Miden and Ouni looked like, right? And how many there were.

So Abi Umeda’s goal was just to kill me with this panel, right?
Tumblr media
She wanted me to perish.
Orca survived the final battle but his ending was still so…tragic.
He didn’t find the joy in living at the end like other characters in the series did, and what he said about the people of Kitrino not having forgiven him yet and that being the reason why he should continue to live is just so terribly sad…
I just really wished for him to find some sort of semblance of peace.
However, he has a son now, and Itia and Kannavi who both love him very much, so I hope that he’ll get a more positive outlook on the life that he has left to live post-canon.
And then this panel is just 🥹
Look at his son trying to climb the bed to get to him! His little legs can’t even reach it so he is kind of just klinging there!! The hand on the head!!
It is so very cute, I love the little details!

The Final Volume
So I’ve finally read the final volume of COTW and I have a few things to say about how I liked it.
However, firstly, I’m going to say a few words to start before getting into more details. And I will warn anyone who reads this: This will get somewhat sappy and probably too long.
It has been a journey with this series and I almost can’t believe that the Mud Whale’s story is over now. This series and its characters truly have a very special place in my heart, even with the flaws in writing that it does have. I’ve been reading this story over the course of literal years, always waiting for months at times for the next volume to get published. Now that it’s finished there is no new volume that I can wait for or get excited about, but that doesn’t mean that the appreciation that I have for the series has gone or will go away.
In fact, I might even appreciate it more now that it has ended.
Now on to volume 23!
It was an emotional rollercoaster.
A lot of things happened in a short time and I was a bit confused at first, but even so I was positively surprised how the end of this manga turned out, all things considered. I was a bit worried about how Abi Umeda was going to manage to wrap this story up with only one volume, but she did it as elegantly as she could with the pages that she had. Even if the storylines of some characters remained open in my opinion, Ouni’s journey in particular felt complete to me.
I have to admit that, while I have always found his character to be very interesting, I never considered him to be one of my favourites. However, I think that how his story turned out is the one that made me cry the most while reading this, because it just felt so right for him.
I probably will dive deeper into this on a separate post where I will be comparing his, Orca’s and Leodari’s ending.
Talking about Orca, he is a father by the end of the story! Something that I didn’t even think about possibly happening for some reason (probably because I was worrying about the fact that I wasn’t entirely confident in my believe that Orca would see the end of this volume).
The scene of all of the nous and their kids leaving and saying goodbye was a tiny bit cheesy, but when have I ever complained about some cheesiness? Though, Skía’s extremely sudden switch-up did bother me a bit and felt a little bit rushed in my opinion.
The flashback at the end almost made me cry again.
I was told that there would be one and was a bit worried at first about how that would turn out, but I actually ended up liking it. The panel with Hamori and Tsuri was so beautiful, and I really like Kikujin’s adult design!
I don’t know if I’m the only one, but I am a bit glad that Chakuro and Lykos didn’t end up together in the end. I’m assuming that a lot of people were expecting it but it never felt right to me personally. Chakuro never struck me as someone who would be ready for a relationship. Furthermore, I liked how the author decided against making Ouni, Suou and Rochalízo end up with anyone by time of the series’ end.
After this first rant I will most definitely post more about this final volume and go into more detail about the thoughts that I have, but I need to structure them first, or else I will end up with a bunch of posts like this.
