Ayato wasn't actually sure how long he'd been working. He tended to lose track of time when he worked late at night, and before he knew it, the sun was rising and he would end up slipping into his bedroom for a few hours of sleep before one of the retainers came to get him.
Or he just drank some coffee and went about his business.
He was brought out of his paperwork trance by the voice, and he lifted his eyes to see Reina standing there at the door.
Ah.
"Of course," he said with a nod. "Is something the matter with your accommodations? We can get you new sheets, or move you to another room if it would help. There are a few empty ones."
" Good night. "
〚 ❄ 〛WORDS WERE becoming harder and harder for her to form, another whisper of her thanks dying on her tongue as she watched Ayato walk away. She felt… Odd, standing there in the hallway alone, a shaky breath leaving her as she turned to her bedroom's door. Maybe she would feel better after some rest, nerves still overloaded from the emotion still coursing through her.
Her room is lovely, far bigger than she was used to in her mother's home — with a large bed all to herself, Reina felt regretful for allowing her new husband to walk away so easily. Despite what her mother may think ( and gods know whatever she had promised the Kamisato head ), she was no stranger to having someone keep her bed warm, a bare body pressed to her own late at night one of the easiest remedies for the insomnia that wracked Reina for as long as she could remember.
Ah, now her thoughts were wandering… Of all things to think of, why is that where her mind goes? She shook it off and began the process of disrobing from her wedding ensemble, layer upon layer of heavy silks hitting the floor until someone could come along and properly fold the garments. A quick freshening up in the attached bathroom, and Reina was finally settling in to bed, body practically melting into the futon as sleep clawed at her mind.
And yet, it never came. While her body was able to relax, Reina's mind was far from doing the same — as time passed with no way for her to measure it, nerves slowly settled until an annoying restlessness was all that was left, leaving the woman to toss and turn in hopes of tiring herself out. When it didn't work, she forced herself up, a sleep robe loosely pulled over her form and hair tossed into a messy bun.
Feet carry her to his office before she could even process the action, before an excuse or reason could even form in her mind. It's only when Reina found herself at his door that she froze, lips pursed out in a frown as she tried to understand why she was there. Maybe… Maybe it wouldn't hurt to tell the truth, to admit to a loneliness she had been feeling for so long that he might be able to heal.
" Lord Kamisa- I mean, Ayato… May I come in? "

"Several things, I'm sure. Paying for your dinner, for one." Because it was a running joke for him at that point that he always paid for meals they had together. Not that he minded. "Anything else I can think of isn't really appropriate to say in polite company." Not that either of them could be considered polite.
“Pray tell, what would I be bribing you for?” she asks, stifling a giggle. “Do you take me for having ulterior motives, Ayato? What would I even be asking for in the first place?”

He nodded.
"I am... quite used to dealing with difficult people. It comes with the territory, after all." And then he glanced around. "I'm sure she'll be attempting to meet with me to see how you're doing, and I don't intend on telling her the truth unless you want me to."
A sigh as he turned.
"Please don't see yourself as a burden here. You're a grown woman with your own wishes and feelings, not a child to be handed off to the next nanny to be cared for. I get the distinct impression you haven't been told that yet." At least not within the context of the marriage.
"I have paperwork to look through. Good night, my lady."
〚 ❄ 〛EACH NEW word that fell from his lips settled over her so gently, and even with the handsome smile no longer on Ayato's lips, there's a relief that came over Reina with everything he was telling her. Shoulders relaxed, sore from how tense she had been all day, and a deep sigh escaped her before she could even hold it back.
" Mother is… She's always been rather difficult. "
Difficult was an understatement — something minute changed in Reina's expression upon mentioning her mother, a faint tremble to her lips as she sucked in a breath and returned her gaze to the floor below her. She fell silent after that, allowing him to continue in telling her what all was on his mind. Her stomach was doing flips at this point with the onslaught of clashing emotions, but what won out in the end is a gratitude for the man beside her that Reina's unsure she'd ever be able to repay.
" Thank you, again. Your home is beautiful, and I'm truly grateful to be welcomed so warmly into it. "
Once more, eyes raised to meet his own, and part of her yearned to reach out and touch him. Perhaps she's just overwhelmed with everything that's happened today, or maybe the events leading up to this moment were finally catching up to her… Whatever it was, Reina was sure she could figure it out on her own, even as fingers twitched where they picked at her silks.
Was this what it felt like to be understood? To have someone listen, and genuinely have your best interest in mind? The feeling was so foreign to her, and yet she never wanted it to go away…

That bright smile of his melted into something more akin to a grimace. Personally, he hadn’t really wanted to go through with this, either. He knew it was his duty to continue the family line, but he’d had so little concern for it that it had fallen to the wayside. Until one day he was approached by several members of the commission, pointing out that he was ‘getting up there in years.’ He hadn’t even hit thirty yet, and surely several of them had been older than that before they married.
But like everything else in his life, he’d filed the comments away for later. He was sure there would be a very opportune time for bringing them back up.
He studied her for a few more moments, before deciding the best course of action- which was to tell the truth.
“I admit that I wasn’t exactly happy with your mother’s insistence that we not meet until the day of the wedding,” he said. “But I realize that this arrangement upends your life much more than it does mine. To that end, I wish to make you as comfortable as possible- and that includes the promise that despite being my wife in title, you’re not obligated to be so in practice.” A pause. “At least- not here in private. And you’re free to use the estate facilities as you please. You don’t need permission for anything.”
Another pause, before, “You’re free to see this as more that you’re a long-term guest, if that’s how you wish. Either way, with the coming festival season, I don’t really have the time to be hovering over you as your mother seems to expect.”
〚 ❄ 〛MISERABLE was an understatement. From the first moment this whole ordeal had been brought up ( something she could not refuse no matter her feelings over it ), Reina had felt absolutely miserable. Her daily lessons of song and dance had quickly been replaced with more mundane things, pointless education over how to be a good wife for the Yashiro Commissioner, and a greater mother in the future…
She hated it. Every second of it.
Even when the dreaded day finally came, even when she should've looked at herself in the elaborate wedding ensemble and felt nothing but joy, Reina was disgusted. At her mother, for forcing this on her. At her future husband, someone she had never met but only heard mentioned in passing. At the damned Shogun herself, Inazuma's beloved archon, for even allowing something like this to happen in her country.
And yet, he had exceeded all of her non-existent expectations — from the moment Kamisato Ayato had gently taken her hand during the ceremony, throughout the entire evening of socializing, he had proven himself to be kind and patient. Disgust slowly melted away into guilt, a sour feeling hanging low in the woman's gut and growing worse as they made their way to his estate.
No, their estate. She was a Kamisato now, after all.
At his words, lifeless gaze finally rose to meet his own, a turmoil of emotion churning in them as she processed his words. She felt… Gods, she felt awful to have assumed the worst of him, hands worrying at the hem of her bridal uchikake still hanging heavily on her shoulders. A nod to acknowledge his words, head hanging heavy as the guilt near consumed Reina, all until she finally found the strength to speak.
" Thank you, I… I was not expecting this sort of kindness. "

princepsstellas:
“L-L-Less– clothes-?”
An obvious chill runs through Aether’s body, stiffening him where he stood. How could Ayato say that with a straight face while he struggled- and was failing- to keep himself calm?
“Y-You- you don’t mean that-”
“Of course I do. I wouldn’t make that offer if I didn’t mean it.” And then he reached a hand out, a smile on his lips as he put it to Aether’s cheek. “I think we both know you’re not feeling hot because of the weather.”

“I-I actually don’t want to get wet- i-if that’s what you mean- b-being a Hydro user and all-”
It was probably the wrong idea that he had but… He didn’t want to allow his head to go anywhere it shouldn’t. Thus he shifts away from the lord Kamisato as his heart began to race.
“I was thinking more something that involved less clothes, but duly noted.”

Secretly slides a serving of his milk tea medley over his desk
"Why thank you." He paused only long enough to take the cup and take a drink before adding, "Is this simply a gift, or are you trying to bribe me?"

“N-N-No- I’m okay-”
Did he really look sweaty? His markings were going through different colours but it wasn’t like anyone else would know that– Ahh he was flustered- that’s what it was.
“P-Please don’t worry about me-”
“Are you sure? I’m quite good at taking care of that kind of thing.” He’s acting entirely innocent but knows exactly what he’s doing. Yep.

@filiasiderum for the arranged marriage AU
The marriage had been in planning for quite a while- over a year in the actual planning, though he'd been approached before that. Despite his insistences, though, that day had been the first time he'd been allowed to see his bride in person.
And, of course, she had looked absolutely miserable. Given his experience with public affairs, however, he'd been able to carry the social aspect of the event fine by himself. And given the tendencies of a lot of Inazuma's higher society, they probably were fine with Ayato's new bride being solemn and silent for most of the day.
While they did plan on having a trip together, the fact that summer and therefore the Yashiro Commission's busiest season was coming up had, at least, been enough to delay it. He hadn't even really wanted to get married at this time of year, but it had been a losing battle.
And so after the ceremony, after the reception he hadn't really wanted in the first place, he was more than happy to be leading her on a tour of the estate. And he didn't really mind that she refused to look at him.
"I had my retainers set you up with your own room," he said when they stopped outside one door in a long hall. "My own is just a few doors down. However, this space is your own. You're under no obligation to share my bed." He did manage to give her a bright smile.
He paused for a moment, before adding, "I'll be in my office in the commission headquarters, though the retainers are still around. You'll likely find one of them before you reach me, should you need anything."

"Looking for something to do?" It seems he's found himself some time as well.

What does one do when they finally have some time to stop? Stare at nothing. She's completely spaced out.

"Oh, I'd say it's more of an honor to be able to spend time with the 'queen of summer,'" Ayato said with a chuckle. "There's a game stall for winning water yo-yos. What do you say we meet there in about three hours? Unless you need more time to finish your preparations."
"Yes! That would be awesome! I'm extra prepared this time so I'll have some time to enjoy more of the festival." She was really trying not to do so much last minute now. Especially since she wanted to free up time to travel more.
"It's like an honor to be able to spend the festival with the festival pros!"

"Being good at remembering special dates is one of the things I like to think I excel at." He glanced into the house as well. "If you aren't too busy later, I'd like to go out to the festival with you. Ayaka should be able to meet up with us at some point."
A long pause as the realization dawned on her. "Ohhhhh right right, that is today, totally didn't forget." She leaned back through the doorway of her house to glance at the calendar on the wall. "Ok maybe forgot what day it was in general. I would have remembered eventually."
"Thanks!" She rubbed at her cheek, grinning sheepishly. "I can't believe a busy guy like you remembered. You've got one amazing brain to keep so much info in there."

"Honestly, given that this is arguably the largest festival we hold all year, the likelihood of something going wrong is high. But that doesn't mean we have to worry about it. There are contingency plans."
"At any rate, happy birthday."
"I sure hope there aren't any disasters. It's just starting to get pretty normal around here." Wow, he had free time and chose to come see her? That was pretty flattering considering how little he normally had. "Well that's super sweet of you to think of me, thank you. Kinda hard to say no to candy."
She immediately had to pop open the box to try one. "Never too early for a sugar rush. Gets the day started right."

"Most of the work today is public relations, which falls squarely on Ayaka's shoulders. As such, unless there's some sort of disaster, I'm quite free for now."
And then he held out a box.
"I acquired some candy from Sumeru from a friend of mine who visited recently. I thought you might enjoy trying it."
@pillaroffortitude
Though it was one of the busiest days of the year for him, due in no small part to one of the biggest festivals of summer taking place, Ayato had taken the time to seek Yoimiya out. He knew it was her birthday, though he honestly wasn't sure what to get her. At Ayaka's suggestion, he'd acquired some foreign candy as an offering. She was still in her house when he found her. "Good morning," he said, a bright smile on his face when she spotted him. "Keeping busy?"
So thoroughly focused on taking stock of her supplies, Yoimiya almost didn't hear the visitor. But, she was quick to scribble the last item on her list and hop up to greet Ayato.
"Well good morning to you too. It's summer time, of course I'm busy." She paused to stare at him for a moment. "Just like I figured you would be too. Didn't expect to see your face for awhile."
