Immigrant Interview
Interview an immigrant of any age, gender, and nationality. Ask to hear his or her immigration story. Listen for the key migration concepts discussed in this chapter: pushes and pulls, bridges and barriers, and immigrant types. Ask about the person’s incorporation experience in the new country. How are gender roles different in the new country? What are the expectations of members of the second generation, and how do their lives differ from those of their immigrant parents. Be sure to take detailed notes and analyze the story, then synthesize it in a short essay using first person.

Fieldwork #10
Tumblr media
This is my family tree. My family is relatively small as I only consider my immediate family apart of my family tree. I do not know very much about my other family outside of my immediate. I know of my aunts and uncles but not of any children they may of had. I have an uncle and three aunts, and my one uncle passed away as did my grandparents on both sides; I never met my grandparents sadly.

Fieldwork #? Ethnicity
Ethnicity is defined as “one of the most powerful identities that humans develop”, as it is a sense of connection to a group of people who are imagined to be distinct from those outside the group. Ethnicity is paired with the minorities more often than not, and exploring the BSSC exhibit one could note that everyone appeared to ‘look the same’,yet the mistreatment to those who claimed various ethnicities was dismal. Many had stories that described their certain ethnic boundary marker, yet they were illegitimate to the proclaimed ethnicity. One woman, the late May Ayim, intermediated between being called German and African yet her situational negotiation of identity was both. In Ayim’s excerpt, was a telltale of her dissociation of her identity and she had an epiphany that she was who she identified with no matter the opinions of either ethnicity. Another man, Kofi Yakpo who also identifies as African and German, allocated his childhood exposure to the African-American culture through music. Yakpo was intrigued by the variations of African cultures spread across the globe, thus prompted him to explore other African heritages and also learn their languages. Yakpo is the epitome of multiculturalism, as he became accustomed to the assorted traditions he engaged with for his own interest. This exhibit for me was very enlightening, as all of these people coming from different parts of Germany and Africa diaspora. Even still through their fray with many condemnations, we realize that ethnicity is a big factor of treatment throughout the world. Our physical characteristics subjecting us to the majorities racial ideology has done everything, but destroy our identities.

Below I attached two videos; a comedy based skit (which is absolutely hilarious to me so please watch that😂), and a interview with people that ask their assumed ethnicity (similar to the game we played in class).

Fieldwork #6 P5
https://www.jbhe.com/2018/09/university-of-maryland-creates-a-safe-space-for-white-students/
This article briefly discusses an incident at the University of Maryland involving a flyer going around that promoted a “safe space for white students” known as White Awake that has the intentions of allowing “White students to explore their experiences, questions, reactions, and feelings on race”. This group also wanted to discuss their ‘uncomfortable interactions with racial and ethnic minorities’. The purpose of this group was very race based in a negative aspect. They had the possible intention of becoming a hate group, having the chance to diss or disregard other races in their own private meeting area.

https://www.vox.com/identities/2018/5/16/17362712/white-man-lawyer-threatens-spanish-speaking-workers-new-york-aaron-schlossberg
This article discusses an incident that occurred this year which involved a white man who is a lawyer yelling at Spanish-speaking employers because they were speaking Spanish. this is a very good example of how race affects your social status. The man threatened them by saying he would “call ICE if they continued to speak Spanish” in America. This issue with immigrants today is still an issue because of the way they’re treated in America by white people.

This article touches on the meanings of lynchings that were initiated as a result of racism. The effect it had on African Americans tore away their mental health and made them fear white people even more than they already did.

Fieldwork Assignment #6 P2
https://medium.com/@hanxine/the-biracial-aesthetic-colorism-and-hollywood-ebe00725cd0b
This article discussing the many instances where colorism has occurred in Hollywood. A lot of movies who apprise African American stories often depict every African American as lighter skinned people because they’re seen as more appealing to the public. An important part of depicting race properly is exploring every different appearance. Hollywood is considered to be well known  for “white-washing” a lot of films.

Fieldwork Assignment #6 P1
http://www.cc.com/video-clips/lcn88p/the-daily-show-with-trevor-noah-kanye-west-ignites-a-debate-about-racism
This video, created by The Daily Show, discusses the dynamics of racism. To the black community, we are seen as overdramatic and oversensitive when it comes to calling out racists. In this video, we understand the clear signs of racism by witnessing people utilize racial slurs and depict us as Golliwog Caricatures (for more info on those read https://ferris.edu/jimcrow/golliwog/).

Fieldwork Assignment #4
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mwVVEYwPoBg
I decided to interview people to best communicate my understanding of gestures. Taking a close look at each interview I realized facial expressions were key to someones emotions; interpreting how they took the interviewers’ (me) interaction with them. Above, I attached my youtube link with the video of my 4 interview sessions.
Part 1: Life Regarding Questions *No definite answers*
From my first video I gathered that he was very confident even though some questions required deep thought and interpretation. When he reminisced there were two emotions he expressed on his face; the first reaction was a smile because the memory was sweet, but the second reaction was more solemn as he realized how sheltered he was growing up yet he was self-aware of how he may be targeted.
The questions centered around opinions he didn’t really have to think very long about despite him not knowing what the questions were beforehand. He gave very in-depth answers and you could tell he felt strongly about his feelings by the seriousness on his face. He did often look down in thought most likely to analyze the question deeper, and he did say a few ‘ums’ in between his responses.
From the second video I decided to interview someone in a different environment. It was raining outside, so I decided to put my interviewee under a little pressure by putting her in the rain. As you can tell, her answers were very short probably because she wanted to get out of the rain. The questions given to her were the same, yet even while she rushed to answer them she still gave her honest opinion. While she talked about her life being affected you could tell it was something she wasn't exactly proud of it, but her shift of tone after she laughed showed her true growth from then to now. When I did ask her about the changes that should be made to the generation her eyes got noticeably bigger and as she looked to the right, you could tell she was very upset with how the generation has turned out. That question also contained her longest response.
Pt 2: Questionable Questions *Definite answers*
For this portion I decided to have a little fun and hand out some riddles.
In the first video, I noticed that my interviewee was slightly nervous because he was fidgeting a bit with his hands and he continuously rocked his legs through the interview. He was very unsure about his answers, so he answered quickly then when I started to ask subquestions like “why” he tried to make sense of his responses.
In my final video I went to a guy in a larger group of friends. If you notice, he was really energetic and vibrant. I noticed between him & the other interviews he was the only one around people that made him comfortable. My interviewee took a lot go the questions as a fun game instead of an interview and often looked to his friends after he gave his responses to see what they thought by reading their facial expressions. They really had a lot of fun with the questions and after discovering some of the answers to the questions they were really surprised and criticized each other for not thinking about the correct answers, which I found pretty hilarious.
In conclusion,  we normally don’t use as many gestures but we do utilize facial expressions. Unknowingly, we can easily read facial expressions better than certain body language. I was able to see some of their body language and interpret their feelings towards questions I asked. For the most part, I believe that asking questions as a stranger affects body language.

Fieldwork Assignment #3
Tumblr media
For my fieldwork assignment I chose a very hostile and resolving public place: The Montebello Complex. The Montebello Complex is home to many offices like the Office of the Registrar, Bursar Office, University Post Office, Office of Business & Auxiliary Services, and the Office of Financial Aid. What drew me to the Montebello Complex was its multi-purposeful structure. I’ve had to visit this building multiple times through out the week to get my mail and refill my bear card.
I was at risk for having to drop my classes due to me not being in good financial standing, so I reminisced on my emotions––being agitated and confused. Inside I found a lot of disgruntled students as expected and surprisingly overzealous employees, and as I observed a lot of students walk in they were very frustrated about their financial aid, work study, or bear card problems. I had never noticed the two conflicting energies before, but taking time to sit in the lobby it was hard to neglect the atmosphere. I immediately recognized the energy between the students and the staff there. I noticed that there were a  bundle of students walking in with a very different strut coming to retrieve their mail from online shopping or just care packages. Those people, other than the employees, seemed to have a brighter smile than the employees there.
I thought I would find less people there earlier in the morning, but to my surprise there was a bundle of students who were handling their responsibilities before their day got away from them. I also thought I would find the atmosphere to be less hostile, but the abundance of students coming in and out were often on the phone with their parents/guardians discussing what the office needed considering forms and the ill-tech savvy parents being with them sometimes trying to figure it out together. I did notice a lot of unity while I saw a lot of families working together to ensure their Morganite can continue their journey for their higher education.
When I visited the Montebello complex on Friday, I recognized a weight lifted from the atmosphere. It was as if the day would go by smoother because it was the start to the weekend. Although, every one that came in had problems they needed resolved the vibe wasn’t as hostile as during any other week day. The building was also noticeably cooler for some reason other than the other days where it was extremely stuffy.
Based on my observations, I would say that The Montebello Complex is a dreading place when you walk in,  but after you leave with the weight of your problems resolved its a better place only there to help people.

study tips: from me to me
I see a lot of posts with study tips for students new and old. A good few of them seem to be pretty good while others also seem to have unrealistic advice and unachievable standards. This is post is more of an exercise for me to acknowledge my weaknesses and strengths, and to figure out which study tips actually work for me. My study tips for myself may not apply to everyone since we’re all individuals with different preferences. Please, keep in mind that these study tips are directed towards myself, though I do hope they help other students.
Although, I do suggest everyone gives this exercise a try. Which study tips would you give yourself to be a better student, based on your previous school year?
Develop a routine
I crave routines, organisation, and structure. It helps me to keep a clear head and feel like I am in control of my choices and my performance.
It doesn’t matter if your class is early in the morning or late in the afternoon. Stick to a morning and evening routine. Develop a routine based on early morning classes and follow through even on weekends. By maintaining a routine adapted to early mornings, it makes it easier for me to wake up early and get stuff done. I have more time to be productive and schedule meetings with friends, doctors, study time, working out, etc. The plus side of having a routine is you get into the habit of doing homework or other tasks immediately. :)
Study full-time ≈ 40h/week
This is actually a tip I got from Jamie from TheStriveToFit on youtube. I don’t remember which video it was, but I’ll just write what I remember her saying. I recommend her youtube channel to all kinds of students, she has great advice whether you’re majoring in med or language or any other field. :)
Studying is a full-time occupation. Ordinarily, you might work 40 h a week, which means you should be studying 40 h a week. If you have a part-time job then you can subtract those hours from the 40 h total. Same thing goes for classes. For example, this week I have 10.5 hours of classes and no part-time job, which means I have 29.5 hours left to study this week. I like to use Google Calendar to schedule my classes and study hours. Having a flexible overview helps me to stay organised. I can even put in homework assignments and tasks in the calendar. Recommend 10/10.
No zero days
This is tip I saw a few years ago on tumblr somewhere and for me the concept works. I don’t remember who posted, but if you are out there, THANKS!!
A zero day is a day where you have done absolutely nothing (zero effort) to work towards your goal, and we want to avoid zero days. If you are just too drained or don’t have time to sit a few hours and study, then just do something small. Read the syllabus, read a page or even just a sentence from your textbook, write down main points/keywords, or even a mind map. Just do something. Anything. It can be small. Sometimes when I really don’t feel like studying, the hardest part is usually getting started. By committing to no zero days, I at least do something, and that usually gets things rolling for me. And whaddya know I can study for hours as long as I just GET STARTED.
Limit your electronic entertainment
Lately, I have been trying to limit my time on Netflix, HBO, and YouTube, in order to have more time to read and study. Yes, I am an adult now, but for me being an adult doesn’t mean binging on TV and not being responsible for my studies.
I decided to limit TV time to Fridays and Saturdays during 17:00-20:00 (5pm-8pm). Once that time is up, I do other things for entertainment. Reading, writing, drawing, studying if I feel like it, yoga, or I might even do a late workout. I also avoid my phone at all costs after 20:00. Staying away from my TV and phone gives my eyes a break and reduces the risk of headaches, (I get headaches when I stare at the screen too long).
Develop the habit of caring for yourself
This is a very generic tip, but also a very undervalued tip. We are creatures of habit. The habits we develop now in our teens and 20′s are what we will be carrying with us for most of our lives. Yes, it is possible to break habits, but it isn’t as common as you think. Focus on habits which will be beneficial to your health now and throughout your life.
When I sleep for 7-8 h I am more focused and motivated to study.
When I eat a healthy meal, I am giving my body the nutrition and energy it needs to take care of my cells.
When I exercise, I am stimulating the production of hormones to keep me happy and healthy, getting stronger, and I am improve my heart health.
You CANNOT live off of energy drinks and fast food. Please, stop glorifying fast food as a staple for a student diet. You can eat healthy on a student budget. Also, the concept of “treat yourself” shouldn’t be something you do everyday. Treating yourself can mean treating yourself to some extra calories one day, it doesn’t have to be a large pepperoni pizza, a hot fudge sundae, and a box of donuts. I have to admit, it sounds delicious, but sometimes it’s best to not have such an epic splurge. I do that only once every three months, but mostly when I treat myself, it’s something small that won’t have a negative impact on my diet focus.
Don’t pull all-nighters and stay up until the early hours cramming for an exam. I usually know when an exam is coming a few weeks in advanced and so do most students. This means you have plenty of time to schedule your  studying so that you learn and understand enough to pass the exam. Failing an exam isn’t everything, but it sure is an inconvenience to arrange a retake exam. Also, the lack of sleep/irregular sleep pattern causes more harm than good.
That’s all I have for now. Feel free to share or message me on what your thoughts are :) Have a good day!
