I do sometimes wonder if James Clark Ross had led what became the Franklin Expedition, the way the admiralty wanted him to, would it have ended the same way? I wonder if he ever felt guilty for not going or blamed himself… and I wonder if Ann felt guilty by extension because she was the alleged reason he didn’t lead the expedition. I’m sure the letter where Crozier said “James I wish you were here, I would then have no doubt as to our pursuing the proper course” probably haunted him.

Lonely old woman Johanna Bridgens… waiting for a certain sailor to come home… for @charlesemersonwinchesteriii for @the-terror-spring-gift-exchange !
These two pieces are 1. Ms Bridgens, 2. A concept pic for what has RAPIDLY spiralled into a much larger project… I fear the comic itself is still under construction, but I wanted to get something up for the lovely prompt I received :)
“Bridgens/Peglar; Femme Bridgens (transfemme or genderswapped, either one is good!) who isn't a sailor reuniting with Peglar after the expedition is finally rescued, after years of agonized waiting. She never wants to let Peglar go again but can't bear to ask her partner not to return to sea. Thankfully, Peglar of course never wants to leave her side again either.”
Sorry you don’t get the heartfelt reunion pic from me yet… it will be worth the wait🤩

"I did not then, nor will I now, discuss the career of Dr. Cook in his later days. I am wholly unfamiliar with the facts which led to his imprisonment, and I have no desire to know them or have an opinion regarding them. Even had I known that he had been guilty of baser crimes than those with which he was charged, I would still have felt my duty and my inclination to be the same. Whatever Cook may have done, the Cook who did them was not the Dr. Cook I knew as a young man, the soul of honour and kindness, lion-hearted in courage." - Roald Amundsen, My Life As An Explorer (1927)

so it turns out that the ship stuck in the arctic that appears in guillermo del toro's upcoming frankenstein movie is worked on by matthew betts, hms terror's #1 groupie, historical consultant to the terror (2018), and author of THAT book, you know the one. insane, incredible, we keep winning!

you guys know you can get USB connectable CD, dvd, and blu-ray players right. and you can buy external hard drives with crazy amounts of space for an amount of money that would make the average person from 2009’s head explode bc of how cheap it is. and if you do this and get ripping software such as handbrake for CDs and DVDs and makeMKV for blurays you can both own a physical copy of whatever media you want and make it accessible to yourself no matter where you are. do you guys know this

Announcing Terror Camp V!
Tumblr media
It’s that time again! We’re amazed and delighted to be kicking off the FIFTH(!) annual Terror Camp polar conference, with information about our programming, key dates, our fancy new branding, and more.
When?
Terror Camp V will take place online from December 5th–7th, 2025. We can’t wait to set sail on a three day voyage with you all once again!
What?
Based on previous years and your feedback, our fabulous Programming team have put together a brand new structure for the three days. As always, we’re looking for presentations, workshops and posters — but this year we’re changing things up a little. Here’s what to expect:
- Presentations. This year, we’re looking for presentations in three formats: 30 minutes, 15 minutes, or 5 minutes.
- Workshops. Same as last year, we’re looking for presenters to teach us a skill, craft, recipe, or other hands-on activity!
- Posters. To improve the accessibility of our posters, we’ve got a new set of guidelines for how to present your ideas.
The deadline to submit your abstract is September 1, 2025.
How?
Our 2025 Call For Abstracts contains all the information you need on how to pitch your piece, plus the submission link for when you’re ready to apply!
❄️ Read our Call For Abstracts
We can’t wait to hear your ideas!
As ever, you can stay up to date with Terror Camp by subscribing to our newsletter, or following us on X, Bluesky and Instagram.
