had dream that thalia and percy were having like an internet fight on olympus social or whatever the hell and thalia, bless her, was TRYING so hard to be the type of person who spends 40 minutes crafting an overly articulate multi-paragraph comment so she can look calm and smart and therefore "win" but all of percy's responses made sure to tell her to "grow up" and it was getting to her soooo bad lol. this was all about her blaming percy for them loosing capture the flag btw

hey hey, i’ve been seeing a recent trend of hoo fans saying that percy wouldn’t have survived tartarus without annabeth b/c she was the one who a) gave him hope when he almost drowned in the river Cocytus, b) informed him that the river Phlegethon could heal their wounds.

Personally I feel like a lot of fans seem to forget that survival in tartarus hinges on the story rick wants to tell? As in, if percy had fallen in alone, there would have been a way for him to survive, similar to how nico survived (and i’m not trying to downplay nico here either), because the story wants percy to live. I feel like percy could have survived alone considering how he acted when he had with no one holding him back, i.e manipulating enemies and the akhlys scene. I lowkey think that this sentiment comes from ppl wanting to downplay percy as a character. If you have any opinion on this, i’d really like to hear it

100% it depends on the story rick wants to tell.

percy has the ability to make himself immune to the effects of the underworld rivers, we've seen it in soh (not to mention he survived the styx and later in hoh saves annabeth from the archeon lol). this doesn't happen w the cocytus bc annabeth needs to have moments where she's competent. annabeth is weaponless, powerless, and injured in tartarus, so she's pretty much useless in the fight scenes, and similarly she can't break their fall in any way. without creating emotional/strategic beats for the story and letting percy flounder, annabeth would have nothing to do.

we don't need to be convinced percy is capable. we know percy could survive tartarus bc there's an entire previous series dedicated to his powers and skills and growth into earning those things. if rick wanted to, percy could've traversed tartarus alone. it's very easy to write a character who wins every fight and overpowers every obstacle. it's also boring.

percy is having a very...emotionally complex time in hoo. in a lot of his chapters, he's ruminating. he's struggling w what happened to him,—he lost months of his life right after a war he was supposed to die in—and he's questioning his relationship w the world. and he's also not saying any of his thoughts out loud. like, nobody else knows that he's developed this fear over his own element bc he hasn't said anything and nobody who knows him well enough to see a difference is looking closely (not a dig, annabeth has her own problems). so, annabeth seeing him struggling in the cocytus is one of the few times another character reacts to what is happening to percy internally. percy just prior to falling into tartarus almost drowned and said he was tired of water! percy should've been able been able to face the cocytus without an issue. he doesn't bc he's already being weighed down by things (and was aggravated prior to falling, did u read the chapter w bacchus? lmao), meanwhile annabeth had literally just been comforted prior to falling. obviously we all know percy's mental health isn't taken seriously in boo, but hoo sets up this realization that percy is not doing well and this is abnormal.
