In the D&D campaign I'm running with my wife's siblings, one of them learned about how trolls regenerate within minutes of any damage not caused by fire or acid, and then asked why people don't just like. Cage them and eat them, forever. Why there aren't troll meat dungeons in the king's castle as a safeguard against sieges or famines.

And you know, I thought it was a fair question, so I said that if you eat enough troll meat, you start getting troll-y. And then I went further and just treated it like troll flesh is a general contaminant - if you eat enough troll, you'll turn into a troll, but if you bury enough dead troll flesh in a forest, the trees will start growing in strange ways, and will scream and heal and bleed when you hit them with axes.

I liked this idea. So as we played further, I just played around with the idea of Troll Origins, and I came up with something sort of like the Odyssey, but instead stealing Helios's cattle, it was Hathor's, and the horrible, awful, unending immortality was her curse of the army that pillaged her lands. A god of healing does not condemn you to die, she condemns you to live.

And then I got this fun idea for maybe the king that led the army is still kind of alive in the troll taint. Like a sort of literal fisher king. The kingdom is sick because he is, literally, the kingdom. The trees that bleed, bleed his blood and their screams are his screams. He is both the faintly green bear running down the mountain and the faintly green deer and there is no way past this without suffering. He is the entire ecosystem, and he eats nothing but himself and he dreams nothing but death and yet still, on and on and on and on, he lives.

Anyway they're traveling next session so I'm throwing this shit at them. I already have some gross ideas for like. Describing everything like it's a body (flowers red as blood, white as bone, pink as meat, grass fine as hair) then finally throwing horrible living things at them. Trees that grow eyeballs that turn and stare at them, or flowers with teeth instead of petals and trolls that speak in long dead tongues about how they wish they'd never tried to rob a god.

Anyway I'm passing this on because this is my new troll lore and I want it to become canonized in the way that all D&D lore becomes canonized: By having eople read it and go "oh, neat" then start doing that too.

the thing is this shot reminded me of porn where the guy finishes on the girl’s chest/face. and as someone who loves talking about the parallels between sex and violence (the phrase petit mort meaning orgasm whole literally meaning the little death, the way movies will have people mistaking a woman’s screams and moans from being murdered for screams and moans of pleasure, the way violence against women in film and real life often have sexual motivations), i think this is a fair comparison.

and then you take into consideration the voyeurism of both porn and the plot we’re watching unfold each week. the lack of bodily autonomy going on.

i'm sorry for laughing at the arlington discourse but i'm used to artists straight up saying "yo i saw so much bigotry in charlotte i canNOT risk coming back to NC" that I do want to echo: yeah, lots of gay people here and in texas too. People be gay whether or not concerts happen.

but no like. people do use that as an excuse to ostracize and demonize marginalized groups in stereotypically conservative places. I know this seems like tumblr drama because the conversation was sparked by the "MCR arlington tourism" joke post, but these actually are real grievances that Black and Queer communities in right-oriented states/provinces need to share. (And obviously others, I'm making that specific anecdote because of the black and queer mcrmy i've seen posts from today lol)

Let me break it down without MCR. I had a (not black) friend up north who used to almost mansplain elements of black culture to (white) me, and while their nearby community obviously has different people than mine, it clicked with me at some point that they were running off a Pearly White Southern Stereotype about this state. Like, bro was unaware of how non-white it is. But like, the white dudes like me are really not the mainstays of culture in this state, nor have we/should we have ever been.

It clicked with me that most of our news anchors are white, movies in the state have white casts, there's just a non-diverse and severely innacurate picture of the population of North Carolina that's been fed to the rest of the nation. Fun fact- I don't think it'd be possible to genuinely talk over the importance of Black History and ingenuity in this state even if I tried for five years straight. Like, unless you're planning on lying about the history of our school system or agriculture or civil rights advancements or how the state exists, you HAVE to center black people. We stole so many humans and forced them over here for labour and we can't pretend their kids and grandkids aren't like still chilling here/other areas of the US.

So when you say we shouldn't talk about black history in this state because you aren't from here and have this idea that it's mostly white people who only want to learn racist ideologies and lick unseasoned corn cobs, you're just misinterpreting the people who live there today, and what their families went through for this prosperity.

Now imagine this about a band that a bunch of gay people like, in a slightly pettier context. Do we want to keep assuming that every single person in a population is strictly defined by the stereotype of their ideologies? Do you want to keep people in a box because "they aren't worth education" or "aren't worth entertainment" ??

Don't write people off as unsalvagable because of the ideologies you presume they have based on where they're from, their skin, their gender expression, or their attraction. This is how we backslide into eugenics and crying that random plots of land or groups of people should die. Education > condemnation and that starts with educating yourSELF. Speak to a gay texan before deciding they don't exist or should die. Touch grass.
